Assassin's Creed Valhalla is due to reintroduce some of the series' most illustrious mechanics, the most iconic of which is probably the dearly missed hidden blade. However, it's also going to include another beloved aspect of earlier Assassin's Creed titles: social stealth.

For those unacquainted with Assassin's Creed's social stealth system, it's a feature that allows you to inconspicuously blend in with crowds in order to vanish. Basically, it's a literal example of hiding in plain sight, and could be used in early Assassin's Creed games as a means of quickly ditching the hordes of Templars pursuing you.

Although we already knew that Assassin's Creed Valhalla was going to reimplement social stealth, we now have a pretty solid idea of how it's going to work in the series' take on the Viking Age.

Here's what Assassin's Creed Valhalla director Eric Baptizat had to say about social stealth in an interview with fan site The Ones Who Came Before.

"As a Viking during this time period, Eivor is not welcome into the different towns and villages of England," Baptizat said. "The cloak you can wear allows you to pass undetected within the crowd and avoid guards’ attention."

"When using your cloak, you have a variety of tools at your disposal," Baptizat continued. "Eivor can use civilian workstations to stay undetected when a guard patrol comes nearby, you can trick drunkards to create chaos and lure guards away from their position, and the last tool is a reference to the first Assassin’s Creed - blending into crowds in order to pass gatekeepers unnoticed."

So, as you can see, there are several ways for you to fade into the background by acting as an ordinary civilian - however, it's the blending into crowds aspect that will likely be most exciting for long-time Assassin's Creed fans.

Social stealth is just one of several Assassin's Creed mechanics that unfortunately fell by the wayside in recent games. Although its return has been confirmed - alongside the resurrection of the hidden blade - it's possible that other fan-favourite mechanics could potentially make a comeback as well.

As far as new features go, though, I'm personally pretty excited about Valhalla's historically-accurate Viking rap battles - I'd take a Norse freestyle over social stealth any day.
