It’s time to talk about one of our favorite female warriors in Avatar: The Last Airbender! Suki is the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, an elite group of Earth Kingdom fighters. While she didn’t have a ton of screen time in the show until near the end, she still remained an incredibly popular character among fans. Who could blame them? She’s a skilled acrobat, can flip a full-grown man over her should with ease, and is not afraid to get involved in a fight. She’s also a young woman with a kind heart who shows compassion where needed.RELATED: Avatar: The Last Airbender: Things Sokka Can Do That Aang Can’tSuki is more than just a tough warrior; she’s a girl with a fun personality and a sense of humor. She’s snarky when provoked, and she can be brutal when she’s trying to prove a point. All of these things together create an amazing young woman who likely had to grow up too fast. How much do we actually know about Suki, though? Since she wasn’t on the show as much as our other main characters, fans may not be as familiar with her backstory.Updated February 11, 2022, by Belle Huston: No reason is needed for us to reflect on one of the best characters who features in the american television show Avatar: The Last Airbender! Our favorite surprising facts about Suki are all detailed in this article.

15 She Was Going To Be A One-Time Thing

Avatar The Last Airbender - Suki and Kyoshi Warriors

Suki became a big hit with fans, and who wouldn’t love her? She’s a strong warrior who isn’t afraid to take on evil to protect others. Not to mention that she completely owns that Kyoshi Warrior outfit. By the middle of the third season, Suki had permanently joined Team Avatar. But did you know that Suki was actually only supposed to show up once?

Yep, Suki wasn’t planned to reappear after the Kyoshi Warriors episode. But she became so popular among fans and the staff that she was written more into the show. As a result, she made quite a few appearances in season 2 and permanently joined the team in season 3.

14 No Field Trips For This Girl

Avatar The Last Airbender - Suki, Zuko, Sokka

One of the running jokes for Season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender was that each member of Team Avatar ended up going on a life-changing “field-trip” with Zuko. Well, Toph kind of did, but it wasn’t what she had hoped. Almost every person on the team did have some kind of adventure of with our sarcastic prince.

All except for one person.

Yep, Suki never did go on any kind of field trip with Zuko. It’s too bad, since an episode focusing on these two would’ve been pretty interesting. They both would’ve had to deal with the fact that Zuko attacked her village, which Suki hasn’t quite forgiven him for. It also would’ve been awesome to see the two warriors in action, since they’re both amazing fighters. The closest we get is when they spend time together during Sokka's life-changing field-trip.

13 The Live-Action Movie Might Have Been Better With Her

Avatar The Last Airbender Movie - Aang

Many fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender hated the live-action movie The Last Airbender, and it's hard to blame them. The acting was pretty bad, the story was rushed, and they even got a lot of the characters’ names wrong. But did you know that a certain Kyoshi Warrior was going to be in the movie?

There was going to be quite a few scenes with Suki and her group of warriors, but M. Night Shyamalan decided they were taking the focus away from Aang, so he cut them from the movie completely. On the one hand, it’s disappointing that these awesome warriors got cut just because the director thought they would steal the show. On the other hand, at least their characters didn’t get screwed over too.

12 Her Name Is Different In Russian

Avatar The Last Airbender - Suki

Avatar: The Last Airbender has been dubbed over in quite a few different languages. And generally, they try to keep the names of the character the same in each language, but that doesn’t always happen. In Suki’s case, her name goes through a couple of changes in the Russian dubbing of the show.

In the Russian dub, Suki’s name is pronounced “Su’juki” in the first two seasons of the show. In the third season, her name was pronounced as “Zuki.”

Why the change in pronunciation? Apparently, if pronounced correctly, Suki’s name sounds pretty close to a Russian swear word. So, they decided to change it up a bit to avoid that potential issue. This makes sense; I would probably be a bit uncomfortable if my kids were watching a show where one of the character’s names sounded like an expletive.

11 What Happened To Suki In The Legend Of Korra?

Avatar The Last Airbender - The Gaang in The Legend of Korra

In Avatar: The Legend of Korra, we saw a few cameos from the original Team Avatar. We saw Aang appear to Korra, Sokka showed up in a flashback, and Katara, Zuko, and Toph are still alive and kicking. But there was one person in Team Avatar who never showed up or was even mentioned in this new show. And that was Suki.

For some reason, there’s no mention of Suki in Legend of Korra. She doesn’t appear in any flashbacks, and we have no indication if she’s even still alive. Legend of Korra does take place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, so there’s a chance she’s no longer among the living, but we have no idea. Many fans want to know what became of our favorite female warrior... but we may never know.

10 She Helped Protect The New Fire Lord

Avatar The Last Airbender comic - Suki and Zuko

After the Hundred-Year War ended, the members of Team Avatar went off to do different things to help rebuild the world. After all, it had been scarred by a century of fighting. So, what did Suki and her Kyoshi Warriors do? Well at one point, they became bodyguards for the Fire Lord.

After the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Zuko takes on the title of Fire Lord, but not everyone is happy about it. Zuko’s life is threatened multiple times, and eventually, Mai asks Suki and her warriors to protect the Fire Nation Royal Palace. So, for a while, Suki was pretty much Zuko’s bodyguard. She even helped protect him when he visited Azula and was subsequently attacked by his sister. Through all of this, the two do actually grow closer and become pretty good friends. The life-changing field trip they never got on the show!

9 She’s The Kyoshi Warriors' Big Sister

Avatar The Last Airbender - Kyoshi Warriors (1)

Suki is the leader of the Kyoshi warriors. All the other girls look to her for guidance and orders and she proves to have quite a few good leadership qualities. She’s firm with the other warriors, but fair. She’s shown to be tough when needed, but also compassionate.

But did you know that Suki is also the oldest of the Kyoshi Warriors?

Whether or not this is the reason she’s the leader is unknown, but she apparently is the oldest Kyoshi Warrior, and she’s in charge of teaching the younger girls. In that case, since we know that Suki is between 16 and 17, then all the Kyoshi warriors are girls under the age of 16. And they still kick butt! We wouldn’t want to get on the bad side of these young ladies.

8 Her Voice Actress Is A Woman Of Many Talents

Avatar The Last Airbender - Suki (1)

Suki’s voice actress, Jennie Kwan, has done quite a few things in TV, movies, and even stage productions. She was in the show California Dreams, played Kim in Chicago’s production of Miss Saigon, and she even did a web series called Fear of a Punk Planet. This lady had quite a few different talents!

But what you may not know is that Jennie Kwan was also in a band. This group actually had songs featured on Princess Diaries and 102 Dalmatians. So apparently, Jennie has a very nice voice. It would have been cool to see Suki sing in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

7 What’s In A Name?

Avatar The Last Airbender - Suki and Sokka (1)

The meaning of a name can hold a lot of significance in a story. Sometimes it’s just coincidence, and other times the creator picks a name for a specific reason. But did you know that Suki’s name can mean either “love” or “moon” in Japanese? The meanings depend on how you pronounce and write her name.

This is actually incredibly significant since Suki became Sokka’s love interest, and she and Sokka got involved after Yue, Sokka’s first girlfriend, turned into the moon (long story, don’t ask). We don’t know if Suki’s name was picked for this reason, but it seems too good to be a coincidence. Either way, it’s a cute reference to Suki and Sokka’s love and to the things they’ve gone through.

6 She’s A Tessenjutsu Master

Avatar the last airbender - Suki and the Kyoshi warriors

We know that Suki is a trained fighter and she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. She’s proved her skills multiple times against various people, such as Sokka, Azula, and the warden of the Boiling Rock prison. But just what is she actually trained in? What type of fighting style did she formally learn? Well, apparently Suki is a master of Tessenjutsu.

Tessenjutsu is a fighting style that involves the use of the Tessen, which is a type of fan weapon. This does make sense, since the Kyoshi Warriors all fight with fans. It’s a great fighting style because it’s both graceful and deadly. These ladies may look like they’re dancing, but they will mess you up with their beautiful fans.

5 Suki's Age (She Got Started Early)

Avatar The Last Airbender - Suki and Sokka

Considering that Suki is only around 16 and is already a skilled fighter, she probably started her path as a warrior pretty young. This warrior has grown up in the midst of war, and it’s obvious she started preparing for it at a young age. In fact, many Kyoshi warriors started their training early. But just how young was Suki?

RELATED: The Reasons Avatar: The Last Airbender Would Make A Great Video Game

Well, Suki started training at the age of eight. At eight years old, many of us in the west were just worried about learning our multiplication tables. Meanwhile, this young woman was learning how to take down enemies. That’s pretty impressive! It would make sense that the warriors started young, especially since the world had been at war for a century. They probably needed all the warriors they could get.

4 She Had A Fling With Mouth-Foam Guy

Avatar the last airbender - Suki and the mouth foam guy

Besides her involvement with Sokka, we don’t know that much about Suki’s dating life. We could assume that she didn’t have time to date since she was the leader of her group of warriors. Or we could assume that she has dated a few people. But there is one confirmed person that Suki has apparently dated, but it’s not who you may think.

Remember the foaming mouth guy who shows up in the Kyoshi Warriors episode? Well, apparently Suki and he dated for a bit. She’s kind of embarrassed about it, so she hardly ever talks about it... but they were a thing at one point. What drew Suki to that guy? She does tend to like guys who are a bit on the goofy side...

3 The Kyoshi Warriors Had Awesome Origins

Avatar The Last Airbender - Kyoshi Warriors

We know that the Kyoshi Warriors are an awesome group of women warriors, trained in Tessenjutsu, who wear a unique garb with face paint. But do we know where the Kyoshi warriors came from? Well, they got started by one of the previous Avatars: Avatar Kyoshi.

Avatar Kyoshi noticed that many women were victims of violent crimes and she wanted to do something about it. So, she began training women in self-defense. This ended up turning into a group of warriors and they continued the tradition long after Avatar Kyoshi was gone. This explains their uniform, since they look pretty similar to the tough lady Avatar. How cool would it be to be a part of a group that was created by the Avatar?

2 Her Fighting Style Has A Real-World Inspiration

Avatar The Last Airbender - Suki and Azula

We know that Suki is a skilled fighter and is a master of Tessenjutsu. We also know that, thanks to her acrobatic abilities, she’s light on her feet, but also has quite a bit of strength. But what you may not know is that her fighting style is a bit similar to another real-life style, which is called Aikido. Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art that involves the user redirecting their opponent’s momentum to defeat them.

This martial art is heavy on self-defense; we can see some of this in Suki’s fighting style. She often does use her opponent’s weight and momentum against them, taking down her enemies in a single fluid motion. And while she doesn’t avoid attacking nearly as much as Aang, her attacks aren’t as damaging as other styles of fighting.

1 She Learned A Lot From Ty Lee

Avatar The Last Airbender - Suki and Ty Lee

Another thing that makes Suki an awesome and formidable warrior is her ability to adapt. She can be tough and strong when needed, but also compassionate and softer when the occasion calls for it. And Suki is not above learning new things. This is shown when she interacts with and learns from Ty Lee.

Ty Lee is another formidable girl that can actually temporarily paralyze people with her chi blocking technique. After Ty Lee joins the Kyoshi Warriors, she actually teaches this skill to Suki. So now, besides being skilled in acrobatics and Tessenjutsu, Suki can know block chi. She pretty much saw Ty Lee’s ability and thought, “Yes, I must learn that.” So, you really don’t want to threaten this girl or anybody she loves. Just, don’t. It won’t end well for you.
