Sk8er Boi is rockin' up on the big screen as Avril Lavigne revealed she's turning one of her iconic breakout songs into a film.
According to ET Canada, the 37-year-old singer spoke on the iHeartRadio podcast She's The Voice about her plans for the 20th anniversary of her greatest pop-punk hit Sk8er Boi — the main idea being adapting the song about a preppy girl who rejects the titular skateboarder into a feature film. The song was the lead single on her 2002 debut album "Let Go."
"Recently with it being the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, so it keeps being brought back up and people will always reference it to me. And so, I'm actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level," Lavigne told the podcast.
Lavigne didn't spill too many details about the prospective film, as it's currently in the planning stages. However, she did reveal that Sk8er Boi, which is still her favorite song to play live, is inspired by the high school dilemma of being rejected by a crush.
"You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there's like skaters, preps, and jocks. It's kind of like a missed opportunity at love," Lavigne said. "The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she's too cool for him but then five years from now she's feeding the baby and she's all alone and she wishes she would've followed her heart and not tried to live up to society's expectations."
In 2003, Billboard reported that Paramount Pictures hired ER writer David Zeibel to convert the song's story into a movie in collaboration with Paramount-owned MTV Films and Alphaville. Unfortunately, it never materialized. Ironically, the song's music video was directed by I Am Legend and Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence.
Lavigne is no stranger to movies, either. In 2006, two years after Under My Skin, she voiced Heather the Possum in the DreamWorks animated film Over The Hedge and appeared onscreen in the comedy-drama Fast Food Nation. Since then, she went on to release five more albums, including The Best Damn Thing and Head Above Water. She recently released her new single Bite Me, which will be featured on her seventh studio album in 2022.
