Whether exploring the Capital Wasteland and the Commonwealth or venturing into NCR territory to fight the slavers known as Caesar's Legion, the Fallout universe is filled with untold dangers and larger than life missions both of this world and out of this world, (literally, as aliens tend to show up here).

While a good portion of the missions in the Fallout universe are given to you naturally throughout the games, there are several instances of players discovering missions that often rival the main game missions. While battling large factions like the Institute, the Brotherhood of Steel, the Enclave (and more), enemy forces operate in the shadows, putting the innocent farmers and settlers in the wasteland in constant danger that requires the player to become the hero of the wastes. Whether you decide to fight cannibals,

rogue robots stuck in the past, or a settlement overrun with monstrous Deathclaws, the Fallout universe is ripe for exploring and discovering hours worth of more quests. In this article, we will be discussing the Fallout universe and the hidden quests that will make your playing of the game several times more enjoyable, and provide a fantastic new look into the secrets of the wasteland. Here is our list of the 20 Most Awesome Quests in Fallout You Didn't Know About!

20 The Final Adventure Of Herbert "Daring" Dashwood And His Faithful Servant

via Fallout Wikia

A popular radio show in Fallout 3, the lone wanderer can meet Herbert Dashwood in Tenpenny Tower, and he will mention that he didn't believe his manservant Argyle died in their final battle in Rockopolis. In this unmarked quest, you must travel to Rockopolis and search for answers as to what became of Argyle, and learn the hidden fate of this radio show character. There you will learn the dark truth of their final adventure. This is something that can be discovered as you explore or by listening to the continuing adventures of Herbert Daring Dashwood and his stalwart manservant Argyle, the infamous radio show playing throughout the capital wasteland. It's an eventful quest you definitely don't want to miss playing through Fallout 4.

19 Does This Meat Taste Weird?

via Fallout3 Nexus

In Fallout 3, the lone wanderer comes across a small town called Andale. There an old man will warn you to stay away, even though the rest of the town acts like they are living an ideal, happy life. You can choose to ignore the old man and interact with the townspeople, but if you choose to heed his warning, you will be tasked with discovering the hidden truth behind this seemingly perfect town in the middle of the capital wasteland. Further investigation of the town reveals that the residents are cannibals, killing travelers and eating them in order to feed their families and themselves. You must decide whether to let the cannibals continue their operation or to stop their villainy.

18 Four Score And Seven Traders Ago...

via Reddit

In Fallout 3, history fans will love exploring the capital wasteland, (Washington D.C.), and traveling to the Museum of History, players will be able to find several artifacts belonging to President Abraham Lincoln. These artifacts are very valuable, and can be sold to three different people: the leader of slavers occupying the Lincoln Memorial, the leader of freed slaves Hannibal Hamlin, or the Rivet City historian Abraham Washington, not only gaining valuable loot and caps, but also navigating the moral divide in the process. It's a moral dilemma encountered a lot in the wasteland, and each decision brings a large firefight, but the adventure that comes with discovering these artifacts is well worth the choice you will be forced to make.

17 Shootout At Megaton

via Fallout Wiki

After the main quest of Fallout 3 is completed, if you have the Broken Steel DLC, the lone wanderer having completed the "Holy Water" quest will travel to Megaton, and outside of the town they will come across a standoff between the settlers of the town and the Brotherhood of Steel, who are escorting a caravan of Aqua Pura. If the player doesn't intervene, the fight will commence, and either the settlers will win and take the water, or the Brotherhood will win and cover up the deaths. However, the lone wanderer can intervene and help diffuse the situation, either encouraging the settlers to back off or the caravan to give up more water, (at the expense of Big Town's supply).

16 Fire In The Sky

via Nexus Mods

In a nod to Fallout 3's DLC Mothership Zeta, Fallout 4 has an unmarked mission that sees the vault dweller glimpse a falling ball of fire, which when discovered will be revealed to be a UFO. You can also discover this unmarked mission by powering up a nearby radio tower and following a radio signal. As you get closer, you will discover the downed ship, and hear an inhuman voice sending what sounds like an SOS. If the player follows a blood trail leading away from the crash, they will discover a hidden cave. Beware what you find, however, as what's waiting inside will not necessarily be friendly. Whatever waits for you will immediately take you to be a hostile force, so be ready to fight.

15 The USS Constitution

via Fallout Wiki

In Fallout 4, one of the strangest sights the vault dweller may discover is a massive ship resting on top of the destroyed remains of a large bank building near the Boston Harbor. Nearby you will find a group of scavengers holed up and being very anti-social towards you. Exploring the area and the boat will reveal that a robotic crew remains on the infamous USS Constitution, a staple of the Boston area that survived the war and has received massive upgrades, and yet remains unable to return to the sea. After an attack by the scavengers, you will begin working with the crew to repair the ship. The player is given a choice to either help the Robot crew or secretly work to secure the ship for scavengers looking to secure loot for themselves.

14 The Secret Of Cabot House

via Fallout Wiki

In Fallout 4, the vault dweller comes across the mysterious Cabot House. You can do this either by meeting a Ghoul in Goodneighbor who offers you a job, or stumbling onto Cabot House within the Commonwealth. Either way, you'll be given a job to recover a mysterious serum, and from there the player is taken deeper and deeper into the sometimes twisted and often strange history and secrets of the Cabot family. Missions range from securing the serum to finding a missing family member, until you finally discover the secret of the Cabot's and must travel to an old asylum to secure the facility before a monster is unleashed. These secrets span decades upon decades, going back to even before the apocalypse, and this strange and sometimes missed mission is a must play.

13 There Be Legionnaires In Them Mines...

via Fallout Wiki

In Fallout: New Vegas, a small road between Camp Nelson and Techatticup Mine will bring the Courier into contact with a Private Renolds, who informs you that a group of Caesar's Legion led by a man named Alexus is holding a group of NCR soldiers hostage nearby. This will lead to a pretty epic rescue mission into the cave, where you can either use any influence with the Legion to gain entrance or if you are vilified by the Legion, you will have to take on a brutal fight into the caves, until you can either talk to or kill Alexus. Finishing the mission will gain you XP and the location for Camp Forlorn Hope as well as NCR Fame.

12 You Can't Make A Nuclear Omelette Without Breaking A Few Deathclaw Eggs

via Fallout Wiki

In Fallout: New Vegas, if you enter a place called The Thorn, you can be given a mission to collect several wasteland creature eggs for a woman named Red Lucy. These animals range from giant mantis and radscorpions to night stalkers and deathclaws, so the hunt for these rare eggs can be dangerous, bloody and deadly if you aren't equipped with the strongest weaponry possible. So stock up on lots of ammo, lots of stimpaks, and keep your AP up to utilize the VATS system. Where there's one deathclaw, more are sure to follow. If you are looking for a challenge, this mission is the one for you, and you can round up some serious caps in the process.

11 A Battle Of Wills

via Fallout Wiki

Speech is a big part of the Fallout universe. Rather than wasting bullets, talking your way out of situations or resolving problems is a must, (especially in those awkward situations where your strongest weapon is a pistol and you're surrounded by robots with laser rifles). In Fallout: New Vegas, players can undertake a massive mission called Someone to Watch Over Me, which starts in North Vegas Square. There you will meet a man named Crandon, who will task you with helping to secure their homes. This will require a lot of bartering, speeches and if necessary, a lot of bullets, all leading to a complicated family drama that could mean life or death, (but most likely death, as this is the Fallout universe after all).

10 Swang Song

via PicQuery

In an unmarked quest in Fallout 4, players can explore the Boston Commons and explore the massive lake near there. Be careful not to disturb a pile of debris inside the lake, however. If you do, a massive creature will emerge from the swamp water, covered in makeshift armor and wielding an anchor. This is a super-mutant formerly known as Swan, and he is a powerful mutant to fight. The best way to fight him is to keep your distance and avoid him throwing massive rocks at you. If you stray too far he will go back into the water, but if you manage to defeat him you will gain a legendary furious power fist. If he submerges into the water again, his health will regenerate so be vigilant.

9 What's In The Box?! (Or Fridge)

via Funnyjunk

In your exploration of the Commonwealth in Fallout 4, players may come across strange and odd characters and items in the wasteland. One such instance involves an old refrigerator. Discovering this fridge, the player will hear a voice yelling out to you. This can be found south of University Point, and as strange as it seems, it is worth taking the time to explore the fridge. In it, you will find your next mission, which will start out as a mission to reunite a family and will end with a battle against some very tough raiders. Not only is this an unusual and action fueled mission, but it's a great reminder of the horrors the nuclear war wrought on the Commonwealth all those years ago.

8 Department Store Showdown

via Escapist Magazine

One unmarked location in Fallout 4 has to be a car park across the street from Fallon's Department Store. Players will notice white painted arrows directing travelers to enter the car park, but be sure you have several stimpaks and ammunition, as the innocent looking sign is actually harboring a dark and dangerous gauntlet for the player to traverse. Inside is a deadly maze, filled with explosive traps, dead bodies and creepy mannequins that make it look like a serial killers lair. If you are brave enough to traverse the maze, you may be rewarded with several fantastic pieces of loot and caps, or you might be given a chance to take a rocket straight in your face, (ouch). Good luck.

7 Don't Eat The Fish

via Fallout Wiki

Another secret location that hides a quest is Longneck Lokowski's Cannery in Fallout 4. Entering this building, you will discover someone has decided to corner the meat packing industry in the Commonwealth. However there is more to this meat than meets the eye, and a simple task of eliminating a rat infestation leads the player to a dark secret within the building's caverns. Encountering a sewer system filled with hundreds of ghouls, the player must fight their way back into the cannery, and when you do be prepared for another fight, as the cannery owner will not be thrilled that you discovered his secret. However, once you deal with the situation, you will be treated with some seriously awesome loot. Whatever you do, do not eat the canned meat. You will regret it.

6 Ghosts Of The Past

via Overmental

One of the toughest spots in the Commonwealth has to be Dunwich Borers, a massive quarry inhabited by a powerful raider gang. Fighting your way past turrets, mines, and raiders, you will find that the quarry is much larger than it appears. Venturing deeper into the tunnels will begin to reveal a blast from the past as the vault dweller encounters the painful fate of the workers of this quarry as the bombs fell above them, and their fate could become your own if you are not careful. This mine is filled with hundred and hundreds of feral ghouls, so come prepared. Word of warning, be wary of falling into any water pits while wearing Power Armor. You could be stuck there for a very long time.

5 Can You Pass The Test?

via Fallout Wiki

Wandering throughout the Commonwealth in Fallout 4 will soon bring you to a settlement west of Taffington Boathouse called Covenant. The town seems friendly enough, or are they too friendly? That's what the player must find out after a mercenary in the town tells them he is looking for a caravan that was ambushed near here, and the people of the caravan are missing. Exploring the settlement, you will learn of the town's deadly secret, and you must decide whether their secret is worth keeping or not. Whatever you choose, be prepared for a fight. This mission involves creepy settlers, the Institute, and the Railroad as the complicated world between humans and synths comes to a head, and the past comes back to the forefront.

4 Sea Monsters Of The Commonwealth

via Polygon

Exploring the Marina near the edge of the Commonwealth in Fallout 4, (closer North to Diamond City), players will meet a young boy who shows the player that a sea monster is lurking beneath the ocean. Or is there? Players will be tasked with discovering the truth behind the monster, and helping a man find his way back home again. Expect feral ghouls, lots of swimming and a powerful new nuclear arsenal at your disposal. I would not recommend you wearing your power armor on the first trek out to the sea. In order to discover what the sea monster is, you will need to swim far out, and the entrance to your next objective will be at the top of the ocean, not at the bottom where your power armor takes you.

3 Burn The Witches!

via Imgur

Random conversations in the Fallout universe can sometimes yield some interesting missions, like the Museum of Witchcraft in Fallout 4. A simple conversation leads the vault dweller on the outskirts of the Commonwealth in the East, and near a retirement home resides the Museum. Outside you can find the remains of a bloody battle, and a storm cellar entrance. Upon entering, the whole building begins to shake, and a loud yelling ensues. Players must navigate the museum and learn what ill fate has awaited travelers all these years. Bring lots of ammo and lots of stimpaks, because this will be a tough fight. However, upon defeating this foe, players will have the option to complete the task these unfortunate mercenaries were given or return a stolen item, and must decide if the loot is worth the risk it brings.

2 A Look Behind The Vault Curtain

via Just Push Start

Secrecy was rampant in the days leading up to the nuclear apocalypse in the Fallout universe. Vault 81 in Fallout 4 hides one such secret, even from the vault dwellers themselves. After meeting the vault dwellers and proving your value as an outsider to the overseer, a vault dweller is attacked and the player must navigate a secret passage to an unexplored and half destroyed section of the vault, and find a cure for the sick inhabitant before it's too late. There you will discover the secrets of Vault 81, from secret experiments and mutated wasteland creatures to new insights into the vaults themselves. You will also find a possible new companion and gain the love of the Vault upon completion.

1 We Have To Go Back To The Island!

via Fallout Wiki

No, I'm not talking about the Lost island. Whether you gain the mission from the Railroad or from simple exploration, there is a hidden island south of the Castle, the Minutemen Stronghold. The island, Spectacle Island, is home to a massive Mirelurk Queen and Mirelurks in general. The player must race to activate a secret weapon to dispel the monsters from the island and make it a new settlement, but this is no simple task. Expect a massive battle to ensue as you try to gain the upper hand against the horde of Mirelurks, so bring stimpaks, strong allies, and an iron will like no other, as this is one of the best kept hidden secrets of the Commonwealth.
