Wrapping up Nintendo's Indie World Showcase, developer Tom Happ announced the sequel to his beloved indie title, Axiom Verge. Known simply as Axiom Verge 2, players will be undertaking the role of Indra, a "mysterious billionaire behind the worldwide Globe 3 conglomerate" and an entirely new face to fans of the original.

The trailer shows off a brand new setting than the first. It looks like Axiom Verge 2 will largely take place in a more vibrant, outdoors-based setting – a heavy departure from the confined, claustrophobic spaces found in the original. Aside from the stark contrast in the environment, the general art style and sound-design are extremely reminiscent of the first title.

Not much is known about the upcoming installment (the trailer is less than a minute in length) and its website isn't too much help either. The line "Decades later… or is it centuries earlier?" is plastered near the top of the page, implying an obfuscated timeline in the series. The new entry will feature "new characters, new powers, new enemies, and a new world" – exciting news for Axiom Verge fans.

According to the website, abilities will be found inside of urns and a "lapis-lazuli" compass will guide the player to them. Other tidbits around the website suggest that the use of a remote drone to hack mechanized enemies will be a prominent part of the gameplay.

Axiom Verge was released in 2015 to mostly positive reviews, hailed as a fantastic modern take on the Metroidvania genre. Standing on the shoulders of the giants before it, Axiom Verge featured exploration, boss-battles, power-ups, and tons of weapon variety. It has gone on to establish a strong reputation and dedicated fan-base. With unique, fan-favorite weapons such as the "Address Disruptor" from the first game, it will be interesting to see what stays and what gets the ax in Axiom Verge 2.

As for now, the secret is finally out. It looks like Tom Happ is content to continue working on the new installment. While there is no release date that we know of yet, the trailer revealed that Axiom Verge 2 is slated for a launch sometime during the Fall of 2020.
