Azure Striker Gunvolt is published by Inti Creates and was originally released for the Nintendo 3DS in August 2014. The sequel was released in 2016, followed by the release of the Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack for the Nintendo Switch in August 2017.

Matt Papa, the game's producer, spoke to the Playstation Blog to discuss the new release. "After the release of Azure Striker Gunvolt in 2014 and Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 in 2016, I had always hoped that one day we would be able to bring the series over to the PlayStation. This way, all of the people who love the kind of 2D side-scrolling action games we’ve been making for over 20 years can finally experience a series that is bursting at the seams with everything we love in a video game."

The new release will feature many upgrades over the original games, which include:

  • An upgrade from the original 30 frames per second to 60 frames per second.
  • All the previously available downloadable content including new songs, bonus modes and extra stages.
  • An improved screen layout with redesigned menus.
  • DualShock 4 vibration is now supported for those action-packed moments and lightning attacks.
  • Higher resolution graphics for both the text and the characters.
  • Changes to the gameplay including gameplay improvements and adjusted game balance.

The Azure Striker Gunvolt series is a side-scrolling action game in which the protagonist, Gunvolt has special abilities like being able to generate electricity. He uses his powers, together with the ability to jump, dash, and use guns to fight his enemies. Gunvolt also has special moves that allow him to heal himself or perform powerful attacks.

Publisher Inti Creates is also responsible for some entries in the Mega Man series and the two games share many similarities. The Azure Striker Gunvolt games are set in the future where humans called adepts have developed special powers. Gunvolt has to use his powers to battle the evil Sumeragi Group, a powerful corporation that runs the world and conducts experiments on the adepts.

The series has received critical acclaim for its art and gameplay and has also been a commercial success. Some of its criticisms are that it's too similar to Mega Man and that it's too easy. In this day and age, it takes something special for a side-scrolling action platform game to do well with the stiff competition out there.

Let's hope Gunvolt has what it takes to blow them away.
