When I had the awesome opportunity to check out Marvel: United, I was blown away. Not only did the collector in me rejoice at the quality of the mini-figurines for my favorite Marvel superheroes (and villains), the tabletop game itself was easy to learn and play almost immediately out of the box.
I reviewed the game during the global lockdown, meaning I couldn’t have my nephews over to play the game with me. This would normally present a major challenge since most tabletop games require at least a couple of players. However, Marvel: United features a solo adventure mode that allows me to play the game on my own. This is the perfect solution for me (pandemic or not), since scheduling in-person game nights can be tricky with my normal group of players. I’ve even been able to play the game while streaming on my Twitch and Instagram Live channels, which has allowed me to play along with my viewers.
I think what’s most impressive, though, is that all the praise and adoration I have for Marvel: United comes from the core box itself. I don’t have any of the exclusive figurines from the original Kickstarter, which was wildly successful and generated more than $2.8 million with an original goal of $150,000. Cleary, tabletop and Marvel fans (likely a healthy combination of both) knew that Marvel: United was something special. Now, the creators of the game have launched a Kickstarter for a sequel, Marvel United: X-Men.
Marvel United: X-Men is already even more successful than the original, currently sitting at a backed amount of $4.3 million with three full days left in the Kickstarter campaign. Every one of the stretch goals has been met, which includes a staggering amount of exclusive heroes and villains, all for only $295. On top of that, for those (like me) who missed out on backing the original campaign, for an extra $220, you can get all of the Marvel United: X-Men characters as well as everything from the original Marvel: United campaign (excluding the core box, cardboard locations, and playmat.) For what it’s worth, I’ve seen the original exclusive characters going for upwards of $50 a pop on eBay, so $220 is a great way to snag the original characters without paying a massively marked-up price.
Marvel: United reignited my love for tabletop games, and made me realize that single-player games do, in fact, exist, which has resulted in me researching titles and spending more money than I should be as I grow my tabletop collection. You can bet that I am one of the backers for Marvel United: X-Men, and I can’t wait to run out of space on my shelves for the incredible amount of figurines that will soon be displayed there.
