Asmodee Digital, the video game subsidiary of board game publisher Asmodee, has announced Munchkin: Quacked Quest, a game based on the popular Munchkin card game series. It is set to come out this fall on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

Munchkin: Quacked Quest brings the irreverent genre-parody humor from the tabletop to the screen. The game lets you embody the spirit of a munchkin, the type of min-maxing murder hobo who doesn’t want to deal with any of that pesky roleplaying. Instead, you can focus on three things: killing monsters, stealing treasure, and stabbing your buddy. The game also includes (i.e., relentlessly makes fun of) a lot of the other aspects of classic fantasy RPGs, including monsters, spells, and weapons.

Quacked Quest retains the spirit of the classic Munchkin games, as it has adapted the card game into a top-down four-player video game that pits players against enemies and each other. There’s only one goal in this frenetic fantasy world, and that is to get all of the ducks and win the game.

This poultry-based adaptation introduces plenty of elements that aren’t possible to implement in a card game. In it, a sarcastic narrator breaks the fourth wall often, adding commentary about players’ actions as well as items they find and monsters they face. The races (elf, dwarf, orc, and halfling) and classes (warrior, thief, cleric, and wizard) are more fleshed out in the game, with special abilities that can be activated to gain an advantage over your enemies. Also, of course, the new engaging gameplay offers much more of the Munchkin strategy of forging alliances with other players just long enough to stab them in the back.

It seems like Munchkin: Quacked Quest is truly bringing Munchkin into a new era. Asmodee Digital’s announcement did not specify whether the original game designers were also developing the new game and instead only said that Quacked Quest is set in the world of Steve Jackson’s Munchkin games. Still, the game seems to embody the spirit of Munchkin, so get ready to put on some Boots of Buttkicking, equip your Unnatural Axe, and fight the fearsome Plutonian Dragon – or more likely, the Potted Plant.
