Baldur's Gate 3 is the fantasy game that truly raises the stakes on immersive role-playing games. You can speak to all of the corpses in the game, bang anyone you want, and all of it will be as realistic as possible (at least as far as faces are concerned) thanks to the game's character creator's use of scans of real people.

Creating a character is the first step in telling a story. How they look, which race they are (there are eight main races in Baldur's Gate 3) background, and class all contribute to how you'll play and the stories that you'll tell. It's a step in the process that can make or break your immersion in a game and one that is very important to a lot of people.

As such, Alena Dubrovina—Baldur's Gate 3's lead character artist—wanted to shine a light on the studio's effort to bring a huge variety of character faces to you. They used 3D scans of the faces of over dozens of different models and actors whose features roughly resembled the direction of each of the eight races in the game. "We decided to use scanned faces in our production to create characters that were as realistic as possible. We scanned 40 people of different ages and ethnicity" Dubrovina said. With some tweaking, this method resulted in 150 unique heads to choose from.

The selection of races and subraces is expected to expand after launch, but for now, you'll have access to the original 16—each with their own unique abilities and attributes. Your choice isn't purely aesthetic, either. The world's NPCs will react differently depending on who and what you are, helping you to become fully immersed in the game's story.

There are over 600 NPCs to interact with in Act 1 alone, so there will be many, many unique opportunities for you to develop your character's story and have that reflected in the game. This kind of dedication to the immersion of the player is what makes Baldur's Gate 3 stand out in the realm of fantasy role-playing games. If you're looking for a fantasy game that will grip your imagination and refuse to let go, this is the game for you. At least until we get a better look at Avowed.
