Baldur's Gate 3 fans have been waiting patiently for the next update. The last one launched in February, adding druids as a playable class. Larian Studios has been quietly working on new content since, and while we still don’t have a specific release date, the launch is apparently right around the corner.

Speaking to GameSpot, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke spoke about what fans can expect front the next update. Vincke admits that the next patch is in fact taking longer than expected, but assures players it will be “more extensive than any of the things we’ve done so far”. He goes on to say that the team has “things cooking that will be very welcomed.” Other than that, Vincke remains cryptic, vaguely commenting, “there are features that you’re going to see in the next update that you didn’t expect”.

Vincke however does go on to say that development has been slowed down by the pandemic and asks for patience in the community. Due to the challenges presented by working in lockdown, Vincke says, “We’re really trying to get the game done by next year. It’s not going to release this year for sure.” Later he added that even a 2022 release date isn’t a guarantee, but that is what the team is aiming for. “It’s a very big game and it deserves to have development time”, he explained, also saying that the most important thing is to take the time to make sure the game respects player’s choices.

Finally, anyone hoping to see Baldur’s Gate 3 on next-gen hardware is probably out of luck for now. When asked if an Xbox Series X/S or PS5 release is on the cards, Vincke only said “you’ll have to roll a D20 on that” (side note: the interviewer actually did roll a D20 - and a 19 wasn’t good enough. Make of that what you will.)

Baldur’s Gate 3 entered Early Access October 6, 2020, and has since been met with positive reviews. It’s available to play on PC and Google Stadia.
