A new mod for Baldur's Gate 3 unlocks the character Origins settings, allowing players to turn their companions into the main character.

Baldur's Gate 3 is being developed by Larian Studios, which is the company behind Divinity: Original Sin 2. Baldur's Gate 3 is using the Origins system from Divinity: Original Sin 2, where players can select from pre-made backgrounds that involve their characters in the story. It's also possible to create a custom Origin, where players decide on specific elements to tie into their backstory. The Origins that aren't selected are used as the basis for the player's companions.

The Early Access build for Baldur's Gate 3 is available now and it only features a limited amount of content. The Origins system is currently disabled, which means players have to create a character from scratch. A new mod for Baldur's Gate 3 on Nexus Mods created by AlanaSP unlocks the Origins system in the Early Access version of the game. This allows the player to select a companion and turn them into the main character.

There are some limitations to this mod. The "Listen to Origin Story" button cannot be selected, you cannot change the appearance of the character, you cannot change the race of the character (though you can change some features, like selectable cantrips), and you cannot change their class (but you can change their subclass). It's possible to change the skills and starting stats of the character. Once selected, the companion associated with the Origin won't appear in the game, so you'll have one less party member to select.

It's unclear how many Origins and companions will be available in the full version of Baldur's Gate 3, but it's clear that Larian has some great ideas up its sleeve, such as the vampire Astarion. It's a shame that the Origins cannot be accessed through conventional means in the Early Access build of Baldur's Gate 3, but fans can at least have a glimpse at what Larian has in store for the full version of the game with the help of the latest mod. We know that the Early Access saves won't carry over into the full version of Baldur's Gate 3, so there is no harm in experimenting with what's there right now.
