Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance originally launched in 2001, exclusively for console. While it became available on a wide range of platforms - PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and even Game Boy Advance - it never saw a PC release, a huge departure from the classic Baldur's Gate titles.
Now, more than 20 years later, it's finally coming to PC. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is out now on Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store. It shadowdropped with no prior announcement, giving fans the chance to play this very different installment in the beloved Dungeons & Dragons game series.
Unlike the three mainline Baldur's Gate titles, there's much more of a focus on action in Dark Alliance. It was born from an era where old-style RPGs such as Baldur's Gate and Fallout started creeping into the third-dimension, trying to expand into the mainstream. However, unlike the ill-fated Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, Dark Alliance was actually received well, with positive reviews across the board.
Dark Alliance differs from the more RPG focussed PC titles by having three preset characters to choose from. You (and a friend via co-op) can play as dwarven fighter, Kromlech, human archer, Vahn, or elven sorceress, Adrianna. There's a bunch of locations from the original games, as well as the usual spells and skills, allowing you to approach combat in a variety of ways.
Baldur's Gate fans looking for new content can also head over to Baldur's Gate 3, which recently got a huge update. In its biggest expansion yet, players can continue the story where it initially left off, exploring a whole new area, and playing around with new classes and spells. The game is still in early access, with a whole lot of new content still set to be added further down the line.
