Before 2019, Banjo-Kazooie's last major appearance had been in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts for Xbox 360, which remains the bear and bird's third and only solo adventure. With their showing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate this year, it seems the floodgates have been opened for several projects. This includs a brand-new Banjo-Kazooie game altogether, which could be in development given a few recent indicators regarding Yooka-Laylee developer, Playtonic Games.

Playtonic Games is comprised primarily by previous employees of Rare, which developed the Banjo-Kazooie series, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and more in its years of operation.

Given this, a few recent developments indicate that a new Banjo-Kazooie installment might be heading gamers' way at some point. First of all, Playtonic recently acquired Banjo-Kazooie character artist Ed Bryan, which means that Playtonic now has all of the character artists who worked on the Banjo-Kazooie titles, as noted by GameJagat. A recent tweet from Bryan himself was especially indicative that Banjo-Kazooie might be coming back.

When asked if something had happened to it in the Twitter thread, Bryan responded by saying, "It’s come out of retirement!"

One other telling indicator of Banjo and Kazooie's revival is the LinkedIn profile of Playtonic Games game director Gavin Price. In it, Price lists Playtonic Games' credits, which include Yooka-Laylee, Yooka-Laylee & The Impossible Lair, "and in the foreseeable future that game #3, #4, and the #5 one too, which is the one I always thought would be game #1."

Finally, Playtonic Games had updated its name in September this year to "Playtonic Games Development Limited." The reason for the update is unknown, though an acquisition from Microsoft is a widely-theorized possibility.

While these are not surefire signs that the Banjo-Kazooie series will be coming back in a larger capacity than an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, they do imply it, as the series' original developers are now back together at Playtonic. Furthermore, given the recent interest in revisiting the 3D platforming genre, now would seem an ideal time for Banjo and Kazooie to "come out of retirement."

Whatever the case may be, we will keep you updated with anything regarding the Banjo-Kazooie franchise and its potential continuation.
