Batman: Arkham City, which was expected to be a bestseller as it’s a sequel to what many consider the best Batman game ever made, has sold more than 12.5 million copies - raking in an astronomical $600 million.

The game shipped six million units four months after it was released in 2012. Although the latest figures haven’t been formally released, a former Warner Bros.' Global Franchise Marketing Manager for Arkham City, Michael Elkind, revealed on his LinkedIn profile that the game had shipped over twelve million copies and generated more than half a billion in revenue.

Batman: Arkham City, which was the follow-up to the acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum, was lauded by critics and earned Metacritic score of 91 on PC, 94 on Xbox 360, and 96 on PlayStation 3. A GamesRadar+ review awarded Arkham City a 5/5 score, stating, "Batman: Arkham Asylum was the greatest superhero game of all time. The second installment in the series, Arkham City was written by Paul Dini with Paul Crocker and Sefton Hill. In the game, Batman is jailed in Arkham City, a super-prison in the slums of Gotham City. Behind bars, the caped crusader must expose a sinister scheme orchestrated by the prison's warden, Hugo Strange. The game's protagonists are voiced by Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, who reprise their roles as Batman and the Joker, respectively.

Batman: Arkham Origins, the prequel to Arkham City, was released in 2013. It was followed by Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015. Arkham Knight takes place one year after the events of Arkham City and follows Batman as defends Gotham City from the Scarecrow, and his ally, the Arkham Knight. Given the success of Arkham City, fans have been clamoring for a sequel, but Warner Bros. has yet to announce any development plans.

According to recent online chatter, the Batman franchise has been entrusted to Warner Bros. Montreal, which appears to be working on a new Batman game focused on the Court of Owls, an organized crime group and secret society in Gotham. Recent website registrations indicate the new game might be called Gotham Knight.
