Switch
Released
February 13, 2019
Developer(s)
Arika

If there is one title that isn't named Mario that is seemingly universally adored by everyone from non-gamers, to gaming enthusiasts, it is Tetris. Drop blocks, make straight lines, and get points. The more lines you clear, the faster the blocks drop. It is simple, elegant, and beautiful. One version of the versus mode found in a number of iterations of Tetris makes it so the lines you clear fill up your opponent's screen. Tetris 99 is that... but against 98 other players. You know what list you are reading, so you had to see that coming.

Tetris 99 can be played pretty passively. If you like, you can just sorta do your own thing, play the hell out of some Tetris, and you will be just fine. However, you can also target specific players, and try to rack up the KOs. Doing so will earn you medals. And the more medals you have, the more of a threat you are. Tetris 99 is an incredible example of how flexible the battle royale genre is. We can't recommend this one enough!

Released
August 11, 2021
Developer(s)
24 Entertainment , Thunder Fire Universe X Studio

You might've come across plenty of battle royale games that make you shoot other enemies, but there are very few featuring close-ranged melee combat, with Naraka: Bladepoint nailing this concept. Apart from that, this battle royale features some of the most beautifully designed characters and skins out there.

It puts you on a giant map with nothing in your hands, but you can quickly grab various types of melee weapons or bows to fight your enemies. The best part about this game is that it lets you play against bots for the first few games to ease you into the battle. However, reading and understanding the abilities of every hero can be a challenge with this one.

Call Of Duty: Warzone

Platform(s)
Xbox One , PC , PS4 , PS5 , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S
Released
March 10, 2020
Developer(s)

If you're a beginner looking to dive into the battle royale genre, Call Of Duty: Warzone stands out as one of the best games to start with. The Call Of Duty franchise has a longstanding reputation as the go-to FPS for many players. Even if you're not an avid gamer, chances are you've participated in a death match in COD at some point. Warzone maintains the same fast-paced action the series is known for, but with two crucial changes: it's entirely free to play, and you compete against 149 other soldiers.

That's right, these battles can be massive! And the developers have done an admirable job keeping things interesting. There have been a number of truly spectacular events that bring some pretty interesting scenarios to the genre. Like, sure, other games in the genre have massive battles, but how many of them have you avoiding Godzilla while you try to do so? There's only one, baby! With intriguing events like these, Warzone does a great job of keeping things fresh and fun.

Totally Accurate Battlegrounds is the sort of battle royale game that's designed to have you rolling around on the floor giggling with your mates. Which is a nice change of pace, as games in this genre often feel like they're more about stressing you out. It's definitely the jankiest battle royale title out of the bunch.

Aiming is impossible. You can put a sniper scope on a minigun. Rounds are fast-paced and full of ridiculousness. If you're looking for a more casual experience, Totally Accurate Battlegrounds is worth checking out. Though, keep in mind that it is a game best enjoyed with friends.

Not really into building bases and worrying about resources? No worries! Realm Royale offers a completely different take on the genre while offering a bright graphical style that is easy on the eyes. This battle royale delves deeper into the fantasy world. Offering players unique magical abilities and mounts. Many new players get turned off by the complex building that Fortnite can have. Realm Royale does away with the building while keeping a similar feel to its combat.

Of course, there are added features unique to Realm Royale as well. An important feature is the ability to recover after being taken down. Players will turn into a chicken; if they survive for twenty seconds, they will respawn. This makes the game far less punishing for newcomers. Even if a match cannot be filled with players, bots can take their spot. Which also serves to lower the stakes a little. All in all, Realm Royale is a fantastic place to start your battle royale journey!

Fall Guys

Released
August 4, 2020
Developer(s)
Mediatonic

Fall Guys took the world by storm when it was released, and while the hype has certainly quieted down over the past year or so, it still has a thriving community. As it should; it's still a fun and an excellent example of a laid-back (most of the time) battle royale you can play with your mates.

In Fall Guys a bunch of beans try to race to the end of a Takeshi's Castle-style assault course. Sometimes you will be teaming up to steal tails, other times it is every bean for themselves as you hop around obstacles and make it to the end goal. That's pretty much the game in a nutshell. The last bean standing wins a crown. These crowns can be used to purchase more interesting skins for your bean. Rinse and repeat. It is simple, honest fun!

Minecraft Hunger Games

Minecraft Survival games best newbie BR

Considered the birth of the online battle royale. Minecraft players created a Hunger Games style mode where players spawn in a circle and grab what they can to survive. Of course, with the freedom Minecraft allows, players made hundreds upon hundreds of different types of game modes, rules, weapons, and much more.

This is a great entry point for new players. Minecraft is generally a pretty intuitive game, that doesn't demand a whole lot from its players, so it is the perfect underpinning to build a user-friendly battle royale mode around. Even though the survival game mode might be a step above the base game in difficulty, it still asks for far less from the player than the majority of titles in this genre. If you are looking for a good time, hop on to a casual server and begin your battle royale journey!
