For new players, learning to play Bayonetta properly is a huge learning curve due to the series' intense action and tough enemies. Luckily, items are available to slightly ease this process. Though some carry a final score penalty for using them, these items provide different magical effects that are useful for getting through hard verses or unlocking certain achievements.

Some items are only available in the first or second Bayonetta games, while others can be purchased in both games at the Gates of Hell. Many of these items can also be concocted by combining ingredients found across the plains of Vigrid and Noatun.

10 Laurel Leaf & Purple Butterfly

In a challenging game like the original Bayonetta, restoring health and magic is crucial for new players. Thankfully, the Green Laurel and Swallowtail Butterfly have you covered. Also appearing in larger versions known as the Green Laurel and Swallowtail Butterfly, these items recover Bayonetta's vitality.

Both the laurel and butterfly items can be found by defeating angels or breaking pots. The laurel items, which restore health, can be generated by using torture attacks on enemies. In Bayonetta 2, enemies will drop Green Laurels when the Mallet of Rewards is equipped. The butterfly items will restore Bayonetta's magic orbs; the Purple Butterfly restores four orbs and the Swallowtail Butterfly restores eight. The effects of these items can also be replicated by the Green Herb Lollipop and the Purple Magic Lollipop, respectively.

9 Bloody Rose Lollipop

The Bloody Rose Lollipop is an item that drastically increases the strength of Bayonetta's attacks for a limited amount of time. Unlike the Climax Brace 2 accessory, all attacks are increased rather than just Umbran Climax attacks. This lollipop is also available in a mega-sized version, which causes the effects to last twice as long.

Rodin will sell these candies at the Gates of Hell with a purchase limit of three for the normal-sized lollipop and one for the mega-sized lollipop. They can also be found in chests throughout Bayonetta's journey, or otherwise concocted by collecting Unicorn Horns. A single Bloody Rose Lollipop requires two Unicorn Horns to create, while a Mega Bloody Rose Lollipop requires three. This lollipop also happens to be the same kind that Luka got Cereza addicted to in the first game.

8 Yellow Moon Lollipop

As if she wasn't already powerful enough, the Yellow Moon Lollipop grants Bayonetta temporary invincibility. When activated, the lollipops will create a magical barrier around Bayonetta, blocking any attacks from enemies, no matter how powerful they are. Vital for players struggling to get past hard bosses, these lollipops are rarer to find in chests than the others.

Like the other lollipops, the Yellow Moon Lollipop comes in a mega-sized version, with the same purchase limits as the Bloody Rose Lollipop at the Gates of Hell. One of the easier ways to obtain this elusive candy is by purchasing it with points after the Angel Attack mini-game in Bayonetta 1. The normal-sized lollipops can be created with two Baked Geckos, while the mega-sized ones require three. The unique designs of these Lollipops depict the smaller one as a crescent moon, while the larger one is a full moon.

7 Witch Heart

By searching in unlikely areas, Bayonetta can find Broken Witch Hearts: items that can increase the size of her life meter. There are 40 to be found in the environments of Bayonetta 1 & 2, and it takes 4 Broken Hearts to create add another bar. This means Bayonetta can increase her life bar tenfold once she finds all 40. Though some of these Witch Hearts can be found in chests and hidden areas, others must be collected by completing Alfheim or Muspelheim challenges.

Five full-sized Witch Hearts can be purchased from the Gates of Hell bar, each one increasing in price as they are bought. In the first game, the Angel Attack mini-game offers another item called the Blue Witch Heart, which temporarily increases Bayonetta's life meter for the subsequent chapter that is played. This item costs 40 points and will even increase the life meter after Bayonetta has collected all possible Witch Hearts in the game.

6 Moon Pearl

Obtained in a similar way to the Witch Hearts, Moon Pearls are items that increase Bayonetta's maximum magic orbs. Found in Broken Moon Pearl fragments, combining two of these will add one orb to Bayonetta's magic bar. These items are even more elusive than the Witch Hearts, with only 16 to be found in each game. This means Bayonetta can increase her magic meter eightfold from the start of the game, allowing more frequent uses of Umbran Climax or Torture Attacks.

Several Broken Moon Pearls are found in chests, though they are usually rewarded for completing difficult Alfheim or Muspelheim challenges. Eight full-sized Moon Pearls can be purchased from the Gates of Hell from Rodin, though like the Witch Hearts, he will increase the selling price each time.

5 Magic Flute

One of the more obscure Bayonetta items, the Magic Flute is the only one that directly damages enemies. When it is played, spiritual energy is released that deals damage to nearby enemies, equal to around a third of their total max health.

This item can be obtained in multiple ways, though the easiest method is purchasing it from the Gates of Hell. Rodin will only sell one at a time, though more can be obtained through other means. In Bayonetta 1, the Magic Flute can be bought with points after the Angel Attack mini-game. In both games, the flute can be created by combining two Mandragora Roots, two Unicorn Horns, and two Baked Geckos.

4 Red Hot Shot

This item can be incredibly useful in getting past bosses that seem impossible to beat. The effects of the Red Hot Shot are so powerful that its use affects Bayonetta's final score negatively, similar to how dying does. The Red Hot Shot will revive Bayonetta once her health is reduced to zero, acting as a second chance for the witch before she is dragged to Inferno. It will restore a large chunk of Bayonetta's health bar, usually enough to defeat the enemy that caused her to nearly die.

This item can be purchased with halos from the Gates of Hell or bought with points from the Angel Attack mini-game in Bayonetta. Once it is purchased, it will activate automatically in the next level, similar to the Blue Witch Heart and Golden Moon Pearl. This item cannot be crafted and takes the form of a red hot needle.

3 Golden Moon Pearl

Like the Blue Witch Heart, the Golden Moon Pearl is an item with temporary effects only available in the first game by playing Angel Attack. The item is activated in the subsequent chapter, constantly restoring Bayonetta's magic bar by two orbs every time it is fully depleted. In this sense, it acts identical to the Eternal Testimony accessory.

The Golden Moon Pearl can actually be stacked with this accessory, allowing Bayonetta to recover 4 magic orbs at once, which is the equivalent of finding a Purple Butterfly or using a Purple Magic Lollipop. This allows the frequent use of Torture Attacks throughout the chapter to use on whatever enemy is giving Bayonetta trouble. Though it does not return in Bayonetta 2, the Eternal Testimony does and can be purchased from the Gates of Hell for 500,000 halos.

2 Midas's Testament

Concept art of Midas Testament in Bayonetta 2 bell

Based on the legend of King Midas whose touch could turn anything into gold, this item appears in the shape of a bell. Only appearing in Bayonetta 2, the Midas Testament will cause enemies to glow when it is rung. Attacking enemies under the effects of the bell will cause them to drop more halos than usual. There are no limits as to how many times the testament can be used, making it great for farming halos.

The Midas Testament can be found in chests across Noatun in Bayonetta 2 and can be farmed by repeatedly breaking a chest near the beginning of Chapter 10 and exiting to the chapter select menu. This item is useful for saving up for expensive accessories, weapons, and treasures, such as the Platinum Ticket.

1 Umbran Crow

Umbran Crow and Tears of Blood concept art from Bayonetta

These pesky crows are hard to find and even harder to catch. Hidden throughout Bayonetta 1 and 2, Umbran Crows are a part of the Umbran Tears of Blood achievements that must be collected before the Climax Brace is unlocked. These crows require quick, precise moves to capture, as only a tiny window of time is open for you to press Y and collect them.

Though some crows are out in the open, others are on hidden perches and require the use of Panther or Crow Within to get close to before they fly off. Most of the time, the crows return to their perch after a while if they fly off, though some of them give Bayonetta only one chance per chapter to obtain them. While these crows don't have an instant effect when they are collected, the satisfaction of collecting them is worth the search.
