An essential step to keeping your islands running smoothly in Before We Leave is peep happiness. Happy peeps will work efficiently, while unhappy peeps can work up to twice as slow. With your resources spread across several islands and planets, it may be hard to maintain happiness across your entire population.

In this guide, we are going to go over everything you need to know about peep happiness, including every way you can raise it. At the start of the game, you will not have to worry about peep happiness as much. As the population grows though, peeps will start to have certain expectations. First, let's take a quick look at where you can find the happiness of your peeps.

Where To Find Happiness Levels

There are two ways to check on the happiness of your peeps. First, you can click directly on a peep and check out their happiness levels on the lower righthand side of the screen. Here, you will see a graph of the peep's happiness since they first started living on the surface, as well as information as to what is influencing their happiness.

You will also be able to check the happiness of all your peeps per island from the menu at the very top of the screen. By clicking on the island number, a menu will appear with all the stats of the island that you are currently on. Switching over to the peep panel will display the happiness of each peep on the island, allowing you to look at overall happiness levels.

Negative Factors On Happiness

There are several negative happiness factors that you will want to avoid. Overall, some of the factors we talk about can't be fully avoided, such as hard work or slight pollution. Below, you can see each negative factor, as well as how much they impact a peep's overall mood.

  • This moodlet will be present when the population of your island reaches 60.

Slight Pollution

  • Certain buildings will emit pollution, which can be seen on the ground. If there is only a bit present, a peep's happiness will slightly decrease while walking through it.

Harder Work

  • Peeps with this moodlet are working a bit harder than they would like, but you can balance this out by providing methods to increase happiness and balance their mood out.

Overpopulation

  • This moodlet will be present when the population of your island reaches 100.

Pollution

  • This is the 'medium' stage of pollution, affecting the mood of peeps that walk through it.

Very Hard Work

  • This applies to peeps who work a very hard job. You can avoid this by boosting the peep's happiness with other factors, but keep in mind that hard work may be hard to avoid.

High Overpopulation

  • This moodlet will be present when the population of your island reaches 140.

Heavy Pollution

  • This is the highest level of pollution. You should avoid having peeps walk through this area, and place housing and farms at a distance.

As you can see, pollution can have a strong influence on your peeps. Pollution can be subdued with cleaners that unlock through the research tree, however, you will want to place high traffic areas far from where pollution is. If peeps are unhappy walking through a polluted area, they will definitely be unhappy living on polluted land.

Positive Factors On Happiness

There are several ways to increase peep happiness. For the most part, these factors deal with material objects, such as food or clothes. Below, you can see the different categories of positive happiness factors, as well as what activities pertain to each.

Food

Food-based happiness factors are a great way to quickly boost the happiness level of your peeps. Below, you can find these positive food-based factors, as well as a description and how well it boosts a peep's happiness.

  • Fruits come from an orchard. Orchards can only be placed on fertile land, which the starting island does not contain.

  • This refers to any open tiles that are near the peep. In general, peeps like to feel at peace with nature rather than confined in a tight village.

  • Musicians are villagers that wander around town, boosting peep happiness. You can unlock musicians by researching Music.

  • Fountains have an AoE, boosting the happiness of peeps that are within this area. You can unlock this by researching Fountains.

  • This is an event that takes place at the Meeting Square. Peeps will stop working and visit the square to relax and spend time with others.
