Button Mashing. You know it; you probably hate it. It’s a solid strategy if you have no clue what you’re doing. In a competitive sense, the sheer randomness and speed of the actions might even give you some kind of competitive edge if you tried to go pro (though we wouldn’t recommend it). Thankfully, the practice has mostly died out.

But you might be one of those unique people who love absolutely slapping the mechanical life out of that action button. It can be a cathartic experience to let go of everything a game has taught you to simply slam as many buttons as possible as quickly as possible. We figure that these controllers will give you the greatest sense of satisfaction with your rapid plastic pushing.

10 The Wii Remote

wii remote original

This controller finds itself right at the start of this list because most of the button mashing is really relegated to your arm acting as the button and your ceaseless waggling acting as the mashing. No one needed a one-armed workout, even if Wii Sports bowling was an absolute blast.

If you really want to consider button mashing on the controller itself, the controller wasn’t really great for that, either. Imagine mashing the B button on that thing; that’s just an awkward motion. No thank you.

9 The Power Glove

Power Glove for NES

The Power Glove suffers from the same pitfalls as the Wii Remote, but it has the added bonus of being much more rad. Sure, the thing barely even worked, but it did also have a built-in NES controller to mash on; as we’ll go over later, that thing was awesome.

The Power Glove may have never worked properly, but go find someone who had one when they were a kid and ask them how awesome it was. They will likely respond with strange and unfamiliar words like rad, tubular, and fly, but don’t be alarmed; those were, in fact, trendy terms at one point.

8 The Konami Laser Scope

NES Laser Scope box

A lot of people may not be familiar with the Konami Laser Scope, and for that, I do not blame you. Like the Power Glove, it was a rather unique controller to be used for the NES. The thing is, the button mashing, in this instance, came from your own voice.

That's right; you had to screech into the microphone on the headset to get it to fire at the TV. It could work for any of the many zapper games, but the fact that you had to shout over and over to make it work is just hilarious to imagine. Your voice is the button mashing, and a full night of playing was only going to result in a lost voice the next day.

7 Joy-Cons

A row of Nintendo Switch Joy Cons laid out

Back to the actual video game controllers we all know and love, Joy-Cons are so-so when it comes to button mashing. Depending on the game and the play style you prefer, you may have to do some Wii-style mashing, but clicking the buttons on a Joy-Con is pretty satisfying, even if you do have plenty of other options.

Sure, your controller will be causing your character to drift while you’re doing all that button mashing, but it’s okay, you can totally recalibrate the controller, and you definitely won’t have that problem ever again, right?

6 PlayStation 2

PlayStation 2 With Controller And Memory Card

Of the big three consoles, it might be fair to say that the PlayStation line of controllers has consistently been the least exciting to button mash on. It’s sad, too, as so many great games actively ask you to button mash.

Of the many PlayStation controllers, the PlayStation 2 probably has the best controller for going wild and mashing like there’s no tomorrow. Just throw on your favorite 3D anime fighter from back in the day and go to town with a friend. Eventually, one of you button mashers will come out on top.

5 Xbox

The Controller S for the original Xbox, released in 2002.

You might be wondering which Xbox controller, but I’m referring to the original. There was something about the older console generations that just made button mashing so much more satisfying. Everything is all streamlined and smoothed out now.

The original behemoth of an Xbox controller had great buttons with great mashability. There weren’t a ton of great games to mash buttons on for the Xbox, but that wasn’t going to stop your one friend from mashing whenever he was losing in rounds of split-screen Halo 2.

4 Super Nintendo

Super Nintendo Controller

The Super Nintendo was home to plenty of fantastic beat-em-ups and shooters that demanded a sophisticated level of button mashing. I’m not even entirely sure what that phrase means, but those who grew up with the Super Nintendo certainly do.

Imagine playing Turtles In Time or Sunset Riders without constantly slamming on those buttons. You would get nowhere in a hurry. You had to mash, and you wanted to mash. Like an instinct, it was built into our young and unmolded minds to bash a controller over and over to win the pretty games.

3 Nintendo Entertainment System

Nintendo Entertainment System Controller being held out

This is the controller that really began the button-mashing craze. You could argue that Arcades were the true culprit, but that’s a big machine and not a controller, so it doesn’t count in our books. This controller was simple but extremely mashable.

It helps that pretty much every title on the NES required some form of button mashing if you wanted to make it out of the first stage. Super Mario Bros might be one of the games that don’t demand that style of play, but you’ll tap that jump button way harder than you need to every time anyway.

2 Nintendo 64

2 Nintendo 64 Controllers

The Nintendo 64 might be remembered more for the bizarre design of its controller, but those controllers were also great for mashing. Just ask anyone who loves the original Super Smash Bros. You didn’t even need to be great at the game. If you could spam buttons with some expert mashing, you’d manage to win a few rounds.

I would suggest not button-mashing while playing a game like Pokemon Snap, as then you’d just be enacting a kind of cruel punishment I only recently realized takes place in the game. Treat Pokemon with care, don’t slam them with pester balls and apples to the head.

1 Gamecube

GameCube Controller Close Up

Let’s be honest; it was like that big bright green A button was a green light to mash as hard as you could for as long as you could. It didn’t matter if you were playing Super Smash Bros Melee or one of the Mario Party games; that A button was going to take an absolute beating.

There’s a reason that so many gamers started reporting cases of Nintendo Thumb when the Gamecube came out: there was no way to resist the temptation to mash. Well, that and every other Nintendo game begged gamers to mash as quickly as possible to win.
