Virtual reality is still a new genre, and there aren't as many games available for VR headsets as on regular consoles or PC platforms. However, there are still hundreds of immersive games to choose from that allow you to jump straight into a VR adventure, and VR experiences are often exclusive to specific headsets.

Although the PSVR is only a few years old - and the PSVR2 even younger - there are already a plethora of games that you can experience. However, many games cost full price, so you may want to try out a few free games before purchasing games from genres that you've never played. Here are the best free games on the PSVR headset.

Plenty of PSVR games have received free upgrades on PSVR2, so if you've got a PS5 and Sony's more recent VR set, do check that out. Mind you, most of those games do have a price tag!

8 VirZOOM Arcade

If you're looking for a decent workout to do while in VR, then the collection of community-created games in VirZOOM Arcade will be the one for you. The mini-games you play aren't exactly the same as a normal workout routine, but they will get you moving and then some.

The game is completely free on PSVR, and it has a multiplayer function where other people can drop in and out of your current game. There are microtransactions, but they won't get in the way of you using this game to exercise and get the most out of it.

7 Hatsune Miku: VR Future Live

Hatsune Miku: VR Future Live is not only one of the best free games on the PSVR, it's also one of the most notable anime-themed games on the platform. In each match of this rhythm game you need to perform better to beat the past landmarks you've set for yourself, so it's a lot of fun to watch your progress as you play more and more.

The base game only includes nine songs, so you'll need to purchase one of the other music packs to make full use of this game. However, the free songs will keep you busy for hours, especially since there are multiple difficulty levels.

6 Allumette

Allumette isn't quite a game, but instead, a story told through a VR perspective. You'll teleport to a new world, and experience a beautifully unique art style like nothing you've seen before. The city you'll explore is similar to Venice, only in the sky instead of on the ground.

Although Allumette is only a 20-minute experience, you'll feel as though you're there for hours due to its amazing world building and your ability to move around the city using the PSVR headset. If you have a PlayStation VR, then Allumette is a must-play.

5 VR Game Demos

Although demos aren't full games, they offer an experience that nothing else can give you since there are so many of them on the PSVR. If you don't know which games to buy after setting up your new headset, then trying one of the many demos available may help you decide which genres are for you.

Many popular VR games have demos, including Superhot, Marvel's Iron Man VR, Astrobot, Job Simulator, Moss, and many others. It makes sense that you might not know what to play, since the PSVR may be your first experience with VR games, so trying different demos allows you to experience new things. The demos are short, but they last a few minutes each, so you can have hours of fun if you try multiple of them.

4 Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Jackal Assault VR Experience

Jackal Assault VR Experience puts you in the cockpit of a starship blasting through the cosmos. The game puts you in the driver's seat, and you'll fly through space, fulfilling small objectives and following waypoint markers.

You can even take part in an epic Star Wars-worthy dogfight with enemy starships. Much like with the Fast and Furious series, it was only a matter of time before Call of Duty took us all into space for a quick adventure. Jump in, shoot down some ships, and take in the sights from the cockpit.

3 Mortal Blitz: Combat Arena

PvP games aren't common on VR headsets; however, they often provide the most fun you can have in a multiplayer video game because of the realism you experience with a headset and motion controllers. The free version of Mortal Blitz: Combat Arena drops you right into the action and allows you to compete against players in a first person shooter arena. If you like using guns in VR, then Mortal Blitz: Combat Arena may be the perfect fit for your preferences.

You can use a few different guns to fight your enemies and win the match. There's a version of Mortal Blitz: Combat Arena that you have to pay for; however, the free version doesn't restrict the fun you can have in the multiplayer mode. There aren't many multiplayer FPS games on the PSVR, so Mortal Blitz: Combat Arena is a pleasant surprise for most VR enthusiasts.

2 The Playroom VR

If you enjoy playing demos or mini-games, then The Playroom VR is a lot of fun. The Playroom VR is a free collection of mini-games that can give you a taste of the mechanics possible with a VR headset. There are a few games in total, including Monster Escape, Wanted, Cat And Mouse, Robots Rescue, and Ghost House.

The games in The Playroom VR may be simple, but that doesn't take away from the enjoyment you can have with them, especially when you are trying VR for the first time. There aren't many other collections of VR games like The Playroom VR, so it's a nice option to have if you want a variety of experiences.

1 Rec Room

Rec Room is one of the best games you can play for free on the PSVR. This game allows you to socialize with other players in a VR space and play a plethora of mini-games online with your friends. You don't need friends to play Rec Room, though; you can also make new friends, since you can search for rooms with random players.

There are a ton of small games you can play online, including first-person shooter modes. If you need multiple types of gameplay to have a fun time, or you want to meet other people that share the same enthusiasm for virtual reality, then Rec Room is a fantastic game, and it's free. There are many rooms to choose from, so you'll never get bored in Rec Room.
