Video games have the power to take us to incredible worlds, don't they? Sometimes they put us in the heat of a guns-blazing battle, other times they put us on faraway planets. But sometimes they can take us to some of the most beautiful and treacherous realms of fiction and fantasy.

The fantasy genre has plenty of great games, but not everyone has a large console. Enter the Nintendo Switch with its convenient portability, and it just so happens to have a legion of great fantasy titles. Before you set out on another adventure, have a look at some recommended titles from the kingdom of Metacritic to take you into another realm.

10 Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen (78)

Battling a Chimera in Dragon's Dogma

Think of Dragon's Dogma as a more user-friendly alternative to Dark Souls. Where the dark and criminally-difficult game series frequently paints the fortress walls with the player's insides, Dragon's Dogma features a more inviting high-fantasy approach. While there are still massive monsters to tango with and exciting combat, this game is probably one of the more lore-heavy entries on our list.

The world of Dragon's Dogma is about as standard fantasy as they come, but it's still immense and rich with monsters, legends, and lore. While it falls into the dragonslayer trope 90% of the game, its mechanics and enchanted world keep us invested and interested in the tale.

9 Octopath Traveler (83)

One of the most beloved JRPGs on the system, Octopath Traveler harkens back to the glory days of the SNES. With it's hybrid of 16-bit sprites on fully-rendered backgrounds, its visuals are definitely something to behold. Brought to us by the RPG powerhouse, Square Enix, this game feels like a return to form, but with one or two modern twists.

With eight different characters to choose from, players can go on eight different adventures in the world of Orsterra. Come for the throwback graphics, but stay for the stories that unfold the more you play this impressive and immersive title.

8 Timespinner (83)

Thanks to the Switch, there has been a sort of revival in the Metroidvania genre. Though there are few that capture the feel of the iconic Symphony of the Night, Timespinner feels more like an equal than anything else we've played. Though the character models look like something out of Chrono Trigger, the gameplay and world have a strange Castlevania vibe.

If you took Dracula's castle out of Symphony of the Night and replaced it with a high-fantasy planet, you'd get Timespinner. Play as Lunais, a Timespinner, who seeks revenge against the evil empire who destroyed her home and family. Explore dark caves, tall fortresses, and unlock new magical abilities in this bewitching platformer.

7 Collection Of Mana (83)

The Mana series of games were one of the JRPG genre's greatest triumphs back in the days of the SNES. With real-time combat, stat-boosting mechanics, and a colorful fantasy realm inspired by the worlds of Final Fantasy, it was definitely a series ahead of its time. But up until 2017, the original series did not have an international release, until this collection.

Collection of Mana features the original entries in the series from Final Fantasy Adventure to Trials of Mana. With gorgeous spritework, enchanting realms to explore, and enough stories to keep the hungriest lore-master satisfied, these games are 2D fantasy masterpieces that deserve to be enjoyed.

6 Skyrim: (84)

When it comes to fantasy games, there are few as timeless or as beloved as Skyrim. Though the port to the switch is nothing overtly special in the visual field, the system's handheld ability makes the game more accessible and portable, so Dragonborns everywhere can take Tamriel on the go.

What can we say about this game that hasn't been said already? It's an incredibly gigantic open-world RPG where you can either embark on the dragon-drenched adventure, or stray far and away from the plot and have your own experience. Either way, you're in for a wonderful time.

5 Wargroove (84)

Hey gamers, do you ever wish Fire Emblem had bigger and grander battle sequences? If you said yes, you might want to try Wargroove. Inspired by the Advanced Wars series on the Gameboy Advance, Wargroove throws the player into a fantasy world and casts them in the role of general, putting them in control their own army of troops.

This strategy RPG has content galore for dedicated players. With twelve different commanders to choose from, various battlefields and environments for combat, the battles might be long, but they're normally interesting. The line between victory and defeat can really throw off your groove.

4 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (85)

A recent entry into the Switch family, but one that definitely deserves attention. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the most impressive and extensive fantasy games in existence, let alone on the Switch. The adventures of Geralt of Rivia have gone from PC to Console, and now he's chased the Wild Hunt to the Nintendo Switch.

Sometimes you need a hero, sometimes you need a professional. At least that's how the saying goes. Take up your blades and ready yourself to take on various monsters and menaces across a rich fantasy realm. It's an adventure you'll definitely lose yourself in.

3 Diablo III: Eternal Collection (88)

Sometimes you want to embark on a noble quest, sometimes you want to take a more strategic approach and command your army or party of adventurers, and sometimes you just want to go gung-ho with swords and sorcery against a horde of demons and monsters. Diablo III is that kind of adventure.

Easily one of the best dungeon-crawlers of all time, Diablo III brings the monster-mashing, loot collecting, dark fantasy epic to the palm of your hands with this Switch port. The Eternal Collection features all DLC, classes, and content to satisfy all players wanting a little hack-and-slash with their high fanatasy.

2 Dragon Quest XI: Echoes Of An Elusive Age (91)

The Dragon Quest series is one of the pinnacles of the JRPG genre, and certainly one of the most beautiful and beloved titles in fantasy gaming. Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age is the latest entry in the popular series, and is considered by many to be the crowning achievement for the franchise.

This game has one of the most beautiful worlds, engaging characters, and a delightful story worthy of any classic fantasy adventure. The ability to shift into both modern and retro 16-bit graphics inspired by the original games is also an impressive bonus.

1 Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild (97)

You knew this one was coming, but in all honesty, how could we not talk about the biggest and most beautiful entry into the Legend of Zelda franchise? Breath of the Wild turned the Zelda formula on its head when it released back in 2017, and we still can't stop playing this absolutely gorgeous game.

The lands of Hyrule have never been bigger, Ganon has never been eviler, Zelda has never looked more beautiful, and the adventure has never been more epic. This game is so rich, so fun, and so enchanting that it's no wonder gamers around the world have sunk dozens of hours into this incredible title.
