Updated March 18, 2024 By Matthew Mckeown: Horror games always go down well when you’ve got a group. Running around in terror, throwing the blame about when it all goes wrong, or trying to work together to take down a big spooky threat, it’s always enjoyable.

For those looking for the next big fright fest with friends, it can often feel like you’re spoilt for choice. But not every game is ideal for your group. So to save you some time hunting for the next top title to terrify your social squad then here’s the latest spooktacular titles worth checking out with an updated look at the best horror games to play with friends out now.

Hunt Together

Hunt Together: A Phantom Watching The Hunter From A Stairwell

A mix of Hide And Seek meets Phasmophobia with a healthy chunk of Prop Hunt and you’ve got Hunt Together. This spooky search game pits you against up to three of your friends in a spooky Haunted Mansion. The building is crumbling and its halls are filled with moaning specters and ghoulish decor.

There are two sides, the Hunter and the Ghosts and it’s up to the resident Ghost Buster to take down the resident abominations from the Other Side. The Hunter has a range of items and Ghost-catching gadgets to seal away those pesky Ghouls, whilst the Undead team can use various supernatural powers and abilities to deter the warm-blooded interloper.

Hunt Together is only available in VR, but it has to be as there are a lot of objects that require using your hands to operate or use.

Disinfection

Disinfection: A Cleaning Crew Encountering A Mutated Alien Lifeform

An Early Access game that is filled with foreboding, Disinfection from Evil Turtle Productions has you and your friends saving and salvaging decaying starships. Each new ship you find is different thanks to procedural generation and there’s a lot of nasty ways to bite it in deep spade.

Each vessel is also infected with a nanomachine virus that brings other dangers to your attempts at turning a profit. Everything is falling apart constantly and it’s up to you to overcome and adapt to each new situation. Gameplay is tense and full of variety, so it’ll keep your group occupied and creeped out for quite a while.

It’s worth getting to grips with some of the game’s mechanics before diving right in as it can be a little overwhelming for first-timers.

Phobies

Phobies: A Variety Of Different Phobie Creatures Battling

A cutesy and chaotic critter card game from Smoking Gun Interactive, Phobies comes from the creative team behind Company of Heroes and it’s an adorable yet challenging adventure in twisted realms filled with all sorts of horrors and otherworldly fiends.

Each card represents a fear and you’ll use those phobias to beat other rational and irrational phobias across numerous bizarre realms. Positioning and using your environment is key and if you don’t think about your approach even the strongest built deck of creatures will melt. If you’re looking for a cutesy horror-themed card game then Phobies is worth checking out.

Phobies comes recommended as it’s Free-To-Play.

HumanitZ

HumanitZ: A Survivor Hiding From The Hoard On Top Of A Car

An Isometric Zombie survival game that rivals Project Zomboid but with a bigger budget, HumanitZ from Yodubzz Studios is a co-op horror game that will put your Zombie post-apocalypse survival skills to the test. The map is massive and filled with Undead, so it’s up to you and your friends to work together to survive.

It’s an Early Access game with very active developers who routinely keep the game exciting and fresh with new features, items, and more. So your adventures are always ever-changing. There are cities filled with loot to ransack and the ability to live off the land with your own secure farmstead. Survive alone, with your friends, or join a PvP server if you fancy kicking things up a notch.

HumanitZ has quite the learning curve, so don’t feel bad about dying on your first few attempts.

Death’s Toll

Deaths Toll: The World Map And The Route Taken So Far

A cute pixel-blasting adventure across accursed lands, Death’s Toll from Curious Fox Sox has you choosing from a range of colorful and strange characters as you start your adventure. Journey across strange locales on a road trip that’s filled with chaotic killer cryptids and other wild animals that are out for your blood.

You can blow through it by yourself, but there is multiplayer and it’s actively encouraged as it’s very easy to get wiped out in the darkness on that long and perilous road. Speaking of, each adventure is randomly generated and you’ll need to manage supplies sold by NPCs to keep yourself going. You need to keep moving in order to stay alive, so start running.

There is a choice system in Death’s Toll and your decisions can impact how tough your journey will be. So choose wisely.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed - One Of The Various Unlockable Ghouls That The Ghostbusters Can Face Off Against

Who you gonna call? Your friends preferably. Grab your Proton Pack, form up your group, and go bust some Ghosts in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. This fun and campy send-up of the classic movies in game form is a light-hearted and action-packed romp in everyone's favorite spook-centric series.

Developed by IIIFonic, this asymmetrical horror game has a team of four Ghostbusters versus one very powerful spook. There are 28 Ghosts to unlock and fight as or against, whilst the Busting crew can customize everything from their character's appearance to the individual weapons and gear they’re taking into the hunt. If you’re after a light-hearted horror game for your friends, this is a good spot to start.

This is very similar to Midnight: Ghost Hunt, but with a bit more longevity, customization, and variety in the matches of spooky hide-and-seek.

White Noise 2

White Noise 2: A Hunter Being Restrained By The Resident Mole Monster

A surprisingly successful follow-up to an original indie horror that performed pretty well and had some unique gimmicks, White Noise 2 takes what made its predecessor terrifying and cranks it up a few notches Featuring new maps, new investigators, and nightmare creatures to deal with.

It’s another of the very popular asymmetrical horror genre, the goal of the game involves a group of investigators collecting tapes around a number of dark and spooky maps whilst the resident monster tears them apart in the shadows. With the right group, it can be quite a frightening and frantic time.

The creature gets stunned by light. Use this to your advantage to save your friends as an investigator. Or craft the perfect ambush as the monster.

Malum

White Noise 2: A Chainsaw Hunter With A Rabbit Mask Kills A Survivor

A co-op horror survival game for up to four players, Malum throws you into the deep end with dark bunkers, demonically dismal sewers, and twisted asylums filled with wandering psychopaths. The demonic entities you’ll be taking down all have their own unique attacks and A.I for hunting you. Plus, each one not only won’t give up until everyone on your crew is dead, but they regularly set traps and switch things up on you when you’re not expecting it. If you like something low-end that can bring out a lot of laughs and scares then Malum is worth checking out.

There is also a dedicated Furry character to unlock called Jeff.

The Quarry

The Quarry: A Werewolf Watching A Counsellor From The Distance

Dubbed the Until Dawn of a new generation, The Quarry took a few notes from the Dark Pictures team and gave things their own spin. You follow a group of Camp Counselors that return to their grounds one night and have a very bad time.

What follows is a choose-your-own-adventure-style horror experience where your decisions occasionally matter and there are plenty of opportunities for someone in the main cast to get killed off violently. There’s also a relatively star-studded cast with Lance Henrikson, Ted Raimi, and Ethan Suplee being the most notable appearances. If you’re looking for a good couch co-op crawl into the dark woods, you can’t go wrong with The Quarry.

Zombie Admin

Zombie Admin: Gunning Down Hordes Of The Undead In The Office In Co-Op

The Zombie Apocalypse has begun but you still have to make your way to the office for work, what a bummer. This hilarious top-down shooter from Hastily Assembled has a lot of charm and works well with its simplicity. The task is simple, climb the corporate ladder either alone or with friends in local co-op during your workday to get to the roof and leave on the rescue helicopter.

Whilst that may sound easy, standing in your way are all your fellow office workers turned hungry undead. So you’ll have to scavenge what weapons you can as you ascend the building and head for freedom. Halls and offices can get clogged fast with zombies, but there are numerous weapons ranging from classic shotguns to bullet-spewing miniguns to unlock.

Zombie Admins local Co-op can get a little chaotic, but thankfully there’s no friendly fire to contend with.

Lethal Company

Lethal Company: A Scavenger Exploring An Abandoned Moon Work Site

Prove just how much worth you can bring to an uncaring space corporation in Lethal Company. This multiplayer horror scavenger game from Zeekers has absolutely blown up overnight and for all the right reasons. You play as a Scavenger who has to explore abandoned stations on dangerous moons for scrap.

To bring in that sweet cash you and your team will need to scavenge dangerous and deadly worlds for trinkets, trash, and anything valuable that you can sell off for a quick buck. Each world has its own unique threats and you’ve only got a finite amount of time to get that paydirt. Fail to make enough cash and you’ll be tossed out into space. Each session brings something new and since the game is still in Early Access there’s plenty of room left to grow and new things to add.

It's highly recommended to check some Lethal Company guides as there are a lot of things you'll need to know to hit the ground running.

Cult Of Personality

Cult Of Personality: The Various Colours Of The Cult Members As They Prepare A Ritual

There are a lot of Imposter games out there and Cult Of Personality does pull heavily from the pool, but it does have a few interesting tweaks to make it stand out. Instead of repairing a spaceship or generators, you play as one of many cultists trying to start a ritual. Think Among Us, but with a big dollop of Eldritch paint.

But, within that group of believers are a few heretics looking to stop the arrival of your local dark god and it’s up to the group to figure out who’s the real cultist and which ones are faking. Possess objects in a Ghost Form to kill other Cultists or complete the Ritual if you’re one of the ‘True Believers’. There’s a lot of anarchy that awaits in Cult Of Personality, so grab a group and jump right in.

SCP 5K

SCP 5K: MTF Operators Of The SCP Foundation Preparing To Breach The Labs

The SCP facilities have failed, and the subjects are loose. This is the theme behind SCP 5K, fresh off a big uplift and rework after its original release didn’t go so well, SCP 5K seems to be doing much better these days. You and your team play MTF members who have to head into a now abandoned SCP facility to figure out what went wrong and contain anything that might’ve gotten out.

There are a number of missions and raids to try out and each mission is procedurally generated so every incursion into a new facility is going to be different. The types of SCP your Fireteam will run into can vary wildly and there are even options for in-depth weapon customization mid-mission. Though it’s still Early Access, SCP 5K is taking a lot of good steps. If you like Milsim Multiplayer games with a lot of horror then check this one out.

Gravewood High

Gravewood High: The Demon Teacher Chasing A Student Caught In Their Vision Cone

Advertised as an infinitely replayable adventure in a horrible High School from HeroCraft, Gravewood High is an Early Access game with a lot of good signs. Students have gone missing at Gravewood High, the adults haven’t noticed so it’s up to the students to solve the sinister mystery before it’s too late. With a story mode and co-op multiplayer, Gravewood High sells a surprisingly solid spookfest

The biggest fun feature worth mentioning is the game’s AI. Alongside constantly changing levels, the resident Evil Teacher will prove to be a tricky foe as it learns, adapts, and counters your behavior in-game. So you’re constantly feeling challenged and pushed as the game plays out. Plus, it’s free to play and it’s available on mobile, so it’s got some extra benefits to trying it out.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Texas Chain Saw Massacre: A Survivor Creeping Around The Cannibal House

Based on the hit horror classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an asymmetric horror game that took a few notes out of Dead By Daylights playbook and then gave it their own twist. The basics are still the same, a team of Survivors versus the resident mass murderer, one side has to escape whilst the other has just to murder everyone.

Always cathartic, but better with a group of friends that you can terrorize and antagonize as Leatherface, or run screaming from room to room as part of the group of poor victims. Both sides have abilities and tricks to give themselves a winning edge and there's a lot of variety in the way different rounds can play out.

Multiplayer servers for TCM are a little sparse, but it's highly recommended to play it with friends or locally with the right setup if you can.

A game that first began its life as a Source Engine Mod, No More Room In Hell quickly became its own thing under the guidance of the No More Room In Hell Team. The hordes are large, there are over 30 weapons to fire including melee and there are dynamic maps and Survival Mode.

It’s a classic that’s aged very well and its infection mechanic that can bring down an entire team from within can add a lot of funny moments and backstabbing within your group of friends. It’s great with a large bunch of friends and best of all, it’s absolutely free.

A nostalgic and chaotic game, with the right mods you can stretch the multiplayer servers to capacity or fill the world with unending streams of zombies.
