Who wants to walk and climb in a video game when you could simply hover across the level or map? There has been a colossal change in the way shooters and action games alike have been made in the last ten years or so. What began as a walking and singular jump type of game has now become a wall-running, floating-in-the-air renaissance.

With this new wave of movement came the use of jetpacks. Games today have found numerous ways to incorporate the enhancement, such as granting you a boost to your jump or even an unlimited flying mechanic that may or may not have turrets latched to its side.

7 Titanfall

Player wall-running

Titanfall is a game that centers around its movement. Before the game's launch, there wasn't anything quite like it. Titanfall revolutionized the way we see first-person shooters today.

You have the ability to wall run and double jump. The two moves go hand in hand, as you most likely need to double jump onto a wall to run along. The double jump can just the same be used to reach one of the mechs roaming the multiplayer map. Once on top of the mech you can deal irreversible damage. This double jump begins as a singular jump, but turns into a boost caused by the two boosters strapped to your back, allowing you to glide further than a traditional jump would.

6 Halo Reach

Spartans floating with their jet packs

The most controversial jetpack on this list is the Halo jetpack. Many purists believe this is when Halo saw its own demise. Critics and fans alike complained that the abilities they were handed when playing Reach were just too much, and that Halo didn't need these elements. Just like most things, fans seemed to swiftly accept the change. People today even consider Halo Reach to be one of the better Halo games in the series.

The Halo Reach jetpack can be clunky and irritable, as it basically works as a slingshot. As you hold down the button locked to your special, the jetpack ascends upward rapidly — with little guidance at all. Nonetheless, adding the jetpack to Halo was a necessary and enjoyable inclusion. Before its introduction Halo's gameplay was a bit stiff and primitive. Jetpacks only enhanced movement, and refreshed a game that sorely needed it.

5 Star Wars Battlefront

Storm Trooper and Rebel having a gun fight in the air

Star Wars Battlefront is a series where the jetpack simply feels right. Not having the mechanic in the game would make the vast open maps feel even bigger and the matches slower. Finding yourself in a pinch, only to boost yourself out and dart towards your teammates is riveting. Hitting a sniper or pulse cannon shot in the air across the map, as your thrusters launch you into the sky, is unmatched.

Roaming through Hoth or Endor in search of an enemy is a task so much easier with a jetpack attached to your back. Furthermore, this piece of tech in Star Wars Battlefront is one of the smoothest in all of video games.

4 James Bond 007: From Russia With Love

James floating on a jetpack

A fantastic use of the jetpack that was simply not long enough. Nearly halfway through James Bond 007: From Russia With Love, the spy stumbles across a jetpack. At first glance, you may think there's no way you'll be able to fly that thing — but you'd be wrong. Bond approaches the machine and straps in. It is then that you begin to hover in beautiful fashion.

What makes this level not only the best in the game, but arguably one of the best Bond missions in the entire history of Bond games, is the automatic turret attachment. The controls while using the jetpack are fairly simplistic in all of the right ways, allowing aiming the armed turret to be fun and exciting to control. Float from room to room, mowing down enemies, all while Bond conjures his best attempt at playing a superhero.

3 GTA Online

Player floating on a jetpack

Undeniably the most costly jetpack on this list, GTA Online offers one for a mighty $2.75 million. If you have played GTA Online, you'll know that amount of cash isn't simple to reach. It isn't like you can jump into the game for the first time and purchase it. Nonetheless, if you are able to obtain the jetpack, it is glorious.

Once purchased, it is officially your jetpack. You may call it in as you would any other vehicle that you own. It comes with rockets and a machine gun equipped, ready to assist you in taking out other players. Pairing that with the ability to zip across the city of is a deadly and exciting combination. The aiming is somewhat faulty at first, due to the stocky jetpack filling the central focus of your screen, but it is something you are able to manage shortly after your first test drive.

2 Jetpack Joyride

Player floating in air with base jetpack

Would this be a jetpack list without Jetpack Joyride? This title takes the concept of floating around on a jetpack to the extreme. Jetpack Joyride is an abundance of game concepts — dodge objects as well as enemies, shooting your way around, while also collecting coins to unlock many more jetpacks.

You begin with the most traditional jetpack. However, the more coins you collect, the more bizarre a jetpack you can unlock. You'll find yourself on a dragon jetpack, or even one that uses the power of rainbows to travel through the level you are on. If you are looking for the most options possible in your jetpack gameplay, look no further than Jetpack Joyride.

1 Destroy All Humans!

Crypto fling in his jet pack

In Destroy All Humans you play as Crypto, a comical alien who is sent to Earth to destroy it in 1959. He is equipped with weapons that can hypnotize humans, explode their brains, or even simply electrocute them. Crypto can also fly his spaceship around town, causing even more significant damage.

Without question, the central mechanic is the jetpack. With a character like Crypto — a sarcastic but ruthless alien — it only feels right to have a jetpack. Even in the original release back in 2005, the mechanics felt perfect. When flying around you have complete control, and can go where you please. When you land, the jetpack folds inward with a beautiful animation. Everything from the design of the jetpack to seeing Crypto's feet swinging left to right as he advances is great. Crypto's jetpack is the most practical and compact design, while also feeling the most capable and dynamic.
