There are plenty of triple AAA zombie games out there to stir up frights. When the genre comes to mind, whether you have played these games or not, chances are the Resident Evil series is probably at the top. A close second might be The Last of Us.

What about the lesser-known series? Not Dead Rising or any other b-tier zombie games. Those get pretty good coverage too. Let’s look instead look at games even beneath that. These zombie games have incredibly niche appeals to them and or low budgets. They might not have gotten universal praise, but they are still worth a playthrough.

9 DayZ

A holdup situation from DayZ

This game started out as a simple mod for a military shooter, ARMA 2. Since then it has exploded into its own genre. Since this game came out, dozens of other survival games and or zombie survival games have popped up.

One could even say PUBG and all Battle Royales could not have existed without this game. It’s not the best in terms of the graphics, controls, and overall polish, but that doesn’t make it any less fun.

8 The Typing of the Dead

This was also a mod in a way in that Sega took the bones of its light-gun game series, House of the Dead, and turned it on its head. That is to say, instead of shooting zombies directly with a gun, you type words.

This first released in arcades before venturing onto the Dreamcast. That said, it may be hard to track down now. Fortunately, its sequel, The Typing of the Dead: Overkill, is on Steam.

7 Killing Floor 2

For those looking for a mindless zombie romp without much of a story, Killing Floor 2 is the place to go. It’s a wave-based zombie and or mutant shooter.

Get gear, set up defenses, and then go to town on the hulking Dead. You can even play this game with friends which is seemingly how it was designed. It’s a literal bloody good time solo or with a team of buddies.

6 Dead Nation

The gaming world is abuzz right now because of Housemarque’s latest entry, Returnal. Let’s not forget about its arcade roots with this PS3 game from 2010. It’s a twin-stick shooter filled with zombies and other infected creatures.

It’s a very arcade-like experience and is far from their best work in terms of the twin-stick arcade shooter genre, but Dead Nation is still a blast.

5 Night Slashers

Most zombie games involve shooting. This arcade classic from the basically now-defunct Data East company was a zombie brawler. While there are still tons of arcade games locked away on that hardware, this game actually is playable today via the Switch eShop.

It’ll be a quick playthrough but it's a cheap deal that’ll give you a good afternoon of zombie beating action.

4 School Girl/Zombie Hunter

The girl squad from School Girl/Zombie Hunter

For those looking for a zombie adventure in Japan, this is it. It’s not an official game based on the popular anime, High School of the Dead, but the concept is close enough to recommend it to fans of that series.

Customize the heroine and then start shooting and or slicing through zombie crowds. It is the lowest of the low-budget games making it look almost like a remastered PS2 game. It is fun though but in smaller doses.

3 Zombie Army Trilogy

This trilogy started out as DLC to the Sniper Elite games. It was then spun off into this collection because of how popular they were. It would be like if Activision decided to release the various Call of Duty zombie modes into a collected stand alone.

Like many of those early modes, this too is centered around killing Nazi zombies which is always a good time.

2 Onechanbara Origin

Aya from Onechanbara Origin

Since this series began as an extremely budget title in Japan on PS2, it hasn’t evolved much. It knew exactly what it wanted to be from the start: a more scantily clad Dynasty Warriors with zombies.

The level design is nothing and the hack and slash gameplay is very basic. Plus the exploitative nature of the female heroines may turn a lot of people off. That said, the series does have its moments. This game is the latest as of last year and is the best rated of them all according to Metacritic.

1 Lollipop Chainsaw

Fighting a zombie in Lollipop Chainsaw

This game could be argued as having a bigger budget than most thanks to it being published by WB. That said, Grasshopper Manufacture, no matter the budget, has never been about creating AAA experiences. They instead thrive on creating unique, campy experiences such as a cheerleader sawing through zombies.

It’s not the tightest action game around but there’s nothing like its style and it really goes for it.
