More than two decades after it first launched, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is still considered one of the best Star Wars games of all time. With its numerous characters, such as your own party and engrossing story, it's easy to see why it is still so highly regarded even today. The side quests in KOTOR make up for some of the best diversions from trying to stop Darth Malak and his schemes. These few side quests certainly stand out from the rest and made you all the stronger while giving you more insight into the galaxy far, far away.

10 Zax The Hutt Quests

KOTOR_ZaxtheHutt (1)

Early in the game on the planet Taris, you will encounter the Hutt known as Zax at Javyar's Cantina in the lower city. Talk to him and he will provide you with bounty hunting missions to earn some credits. Thankfully most of them are really bad people, but some blur the lines between good and evil.

When this happens, you actually have the option of either killing them or actually helping them out. What's great about this sudden turn of events is the freedom the game gives you in how you help them out. Better have a good imagination to get these people out of their jams.

9 The Promised Land

Rukil tells you about the journal's describing a promised land's location

In the slums of the Taris undercity lies people exiled from the city above who struggle to live every day with combating both deadly predators and diseases. Leading these people is Rukil, the elder of the village where the outcasts stay. Talk to him and he will tell you of a promised land that will lead his people to a hopeful new beginning, if they can find it.

Now you'll have to find some journals that provide clues to where this place is hidden. After recovering the books, you are given the option of being a saint and delivering the journals and helping the village, or destroying the journals to stop them from embarking on their journey.

8 The Hermit In The Hills

The hermit Jorak Uln tests your knowledge of the sith code with a hypothetical question

During the story of Knights of the Old Republic, you will eventually find yourself on Korriban, the place where the sith train, to find a star map. You'll have to pose as a sith trainee which will eventually lead you to the tomb of Tulak Hord to impress the headmaster of the sith academy there.

Go there and you will encounter a man named Jorak Uln who will test your knowledge of the sith code. What seems like a basic quiz game turns into a test with some rather high stakes that can result in some deadly consequences if you guess incorrectly.

7 The Sword Of Ajunta Pall

Encountering Ajunta Pall's ghost inside of his tomb

Sometimes, it's what you get out of a quest that makes completing it worth it. Such is the case with The Sword of Ajunta Pall. On Korriban, this powerful item can be found in the tomb of Ajunta Pall.

There is danger galore in the tomb, but the biggest surprise comes when you open Pall's sarcophagus. His ghost will come out and recite the tale of his downfall and present you with choosing one of three swords. Pall provides you with the clues needed to pick the correct one and doing so will reward you with one of the best items in the game.

6 The Mysterious Box

Encountering the Rakata inside of the mysterious box, which is actually a mind prison

Curiosity killed the cat, or so they say. But that is definitely a saying you'll be telling yourself when you pick up this quest. Also on Korriban is a strange triangle-shaped box with instructions to deliver it to Motta The Hutt on Tattoione that can be taken off the hands of a rodian. The box also has clear instructions not to open it, which you can ignore.

Open it and your mind will end up in the box, which is revealed to be a mind prison. There, you'll encounter an imprisoned Rakata who will challenge you to a game of riddles. The winner of which gets control of your body. Make sure to pay attention.

5 The Missing Companion

Elise introduces herself, starting a really odd rescue mission

After you finish some quick Jedi training on Dantooine, you can encounter a woman named Elise who is in some very clear distress. She'll ask you to help her find her companion which seemingly starts a pretty simple search and rescue mission.

You find out her companion is a droid who is being attacked by Kath hounds. Once you clear them out, you eventually discover that said droid, C8-42-GE3 was actually trying to kill himself on purpose as Elise has been treating C8 like her recently deceased husband, which includes having feelings for him. C8 will demand you destroy him in order to help Elise move on from her grief, the choice of which, is up to you.

4 Murdered Settler

A suspect describes how well he knew the murdered settler in the quest of the same name

Everyone loves a good murder mystery and you will actually run into one in the Grove section of Dantooine, courtesy of the Jedi Bolook. There you will find a crime scene where a settler was recently murdered. Bolook reveals two people are suspects and you have to determine which of the two committed the deed.

Now you have to do some detective work and question the two suspects to hear their statements. Pay close attention to what they're saying as there could be inconsistencies in what they're telling you. A different quest in the game that requires some hard thinking and a keen mind to identify the right culprit.

3 Sunry Murder Trial

Preparing to defend Sunry in his trial

Turns out there's another murder case that needs solving in KOTOR, this time over on Manaan. There an old friend of companion Jolee Bindo, Sunry, is currently imprisoned for the murder of a sith woman there. To help him out, you need to not only find evidence that leads to the truth but also defend Sunry in court.

Using everything you found, you have to successfully prove Sunry's innocence, which is easier said than done in the courts of Manaan. It is an all-around neat quest that should really be checked out if you enjoyed the Dantooine quest.

2 Genoharadan Contracts

Screenshot of the Genoharadan in action

On Tatooine, you can undertake assassination missions for the Genoharadan bounty hunting guild. Talk to the rodian named Hulas in the East Central courtyard, alone, to receive a contract. This is for those that lean into the dark side, so those on the other end of the Force spectrum will want to steer clear of this.

The contracts in question give you a lot of freedom in how you eliminate your targets. This even includes arranging their demises to look like accidents so no one suspects a thing. A lot of sneaking is required but it is a fun and worthwhile escapade to undertake from time to time.

1 Romance Side Quests

Bastila dismisses the idea of romance, since it goes against the Jedi's teachings in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

While not as in-depth as their future games, Bioware decided to include the option of romancing three different characters, should they lean more towards the light side. Those characters are Bastilla for males, Carth and Juhani for females. While not an official side quest per se, talking to them will reveal a lot about them and even lead to a companion mission.

It was an option that was ahead of its time in some ways as it helped you relate to these three characters on a more personal level that hadn't really been explored before. It is one reason people still love KOTOR so much and makes it the best side quest in the game.
