RPGs have been a staple genre of video games since the earliest days of gaming, initially drawing influence from traditional RPGs. As the video game genre evolved, however, the majority of popular RPG video games took the form of single-player experiences. Despite this, there are still many great RPGs that have multiplayer functionality, allowing a game to be played cooperatively with several players.

While the multiplayer functionality of these games varies, the functionality allows for cooperative experiences that wouldn't be available otherwise. So today, we're going to explore the PS4's library and see which multiplayer RPGs on the console are the most outstanding.

16 Child Of Light

Child of Light is a highly underrated turn-based RPG with a distinct visual style and an active time battle system reminiscent of many classic entries in the Final Fantasy series.

While the game offers a solid single-player experience, it allows a second player to control a firefly that can be used in many ways in and out of combat, able to interact with items, heal party members, and stall foes, while another player controls the core party.

15 Borderlands 3

The third main entry in the Borderlands series, Borderlands 3 is a cooperative blend of a first-person shooter and an RPG. Allowing players to access absurd amounts of randomly generated gear with varying effects, Borderlands features sharp and comedic writing alongside a myriad of side-quests and depth for players to enjoy as they level up their characters and gain new abilities.

For those looking for a co-op RPG without the types of gameplay usually associated with them, Borderlands 3 may be a great choice!

14 Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is a wonderful indie game from ConcernedApe. It's one of the most successful indie ventures of all time, a feat made even more incredible by the fact that the entire game was put together by just one person. In it, you play as an office worker from the big city who has decided to move out to their grandfather's old farm in, you guessed it, Stardew Valley!

You'll get to know the residents of the nearby village, Pelican Town, explore the deep mines that sprawl beneath the surface, raise animals, grow crops, make friends, fall in love, and decorate your farm to your heart's content. Plus, you can do all of that with up to three other players, allowing you to create your dream farm together.

13 Tales Of Berseria

The "Tales Of" series is a franchise of action-based JRPGs that opt for fast-paced real-time battles rather than turn-based ones.

One defining trait found in most games in the series is the ability to allow each member of one's party to be controlled by different players, allowing for the majority of the game to be played cooperatively. Released in 2016, Tales of Berseria is one of the most recent entries in the series, featuring a memorable cast, solid writing, and polished combat.

12 Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter: World was the Monster Hunter series' first step into a new era of monster hunting. With more detailed and ambient environments, a streamlined hunting process, and tons of quality-of-life changes, World offers a more accessible option in this massive franchise.

By teaming up with up to four players, you can hunt the game's massive monsters, wielding a variety of different weapon types that fundamentally change how the game is played. Then, use the materials you earn from these monsters to craft and upgrade your weapons and armor, allowing you to hunt progressively more difficult monsters.

11 Diablo III

Easily one of the most widely popular entries on this list, Diablo III is a dungeon-crawling hack-and-slasher developed by Blizzard. First released in 2012, the game features seven playable character classes that each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Killing hordes of demons with your friends is a staple of the Diablo franchise, as you grind for the perfect item to complete your build. You can play in four-player co-op, with many of the classes and builds available working together synergistically to create the perfect environment for co-op play.

10 The Dark Souls Series

A series with quite a notorious reputation, the Dark Souls franchise is a grim and unforgiving action RPG, that prioritizes patience, timing, and precision. While each entry in the Dark Souls series may be difficult, they can be played both cooperatively or competitively, allowing you to either assist or fight against other players.

Any of the three Dark Souls games are great experiences to try with a friend, with Dark Souls 3 being the most accessible of the trio. If you're looking for a tough but extremely rewarding RPG to play with a friend, you can't go wrong with Dark Souls.

9 Bloodborne

Another action RPG developed by FromSoftware, Bloodborne features a distinct gothic aesthetic and similar unforgiving gameplay to that of the Dark Souls series. However, while Dark Souls is a game that is primarily designed around parrying foe's attacks, defending, and backstabbing, Bloodborne is a more fluid and offense-focused experience.

Similar to Dark Souls, the game's multiplayer has both cooperative and competitive functionality that allows players to either work together or against each other.

8 Warframe

Warframe is a third-person action RPG where you control the titular Warframe, fighting against various factions over control of the Origin System. Each Warframe has unique abilities that can change your playstyle, with hundreds of weapons on offer as well.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of content to enjoy in Warframe, and playing with a friend or two makes it even better. Warframe is very grind-heavy, with many of the game's items taking tons of resources to craft, so it's definitely more suited to players who want to dive deep into a new game.

7 Dragon's Crown

Dragon's Crown is a distinct blend of a classic arcade-style Beat Em' Up and an action RPG that can be played cooperatively with up to four players.

With six different playable classes that each offer different play styles, players are able to flexibly level up their character how they see fit through the game's progression system that provides players with the choice of which skills to improve and learn. Dragon's Crown's combat is fast-paced and grows in-depth as the game progresses, with character's move sets growing to resemble those of fighting game characters.

6 For The King

For The King is a unique strategic RPG that incorporates tabletop and rogue-lite elements. The combat is turn-based, but still manages to be fast-paced and engaging. The roguelite elements are involved in generating a new, random map to keep each playthrough fresh and interesting.

Additionally, as with many RPGs, For The King is dedicated to reliable multiplayer. You can play with others online or locally and strategize about the best way to cross the map - will you split up and cover more ground, or stick together for everyone's safety? Even beginners will have a blast!

5 Divinity: Original Sin 2

Of the games on this list, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the game that is the most akin to the genre's classic tabletop roots. After a player creates their character, they can form a party with other players, able to experience the entire RPG together.

However, the game allows players to split their party whenever they want, or continue to work together. In addition to featuring a deep combat system, the game's robust skill system provides players with significant freedom to make their personal ideal characters.

4 Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is a first-person looter-shooter with fast-paced action combat. After choosing between one of three unique classes and creating your character, you'll take on the role of the Guardian and defend humanity from numerous invading threats.

Destiny 2's gunplay is exceptionally fluid and satisfying, and is elevated even further with the unique powers of each class. The base game of Destiny 2 is free-to-play, so you can try out the game with your friends before you settle into the vast wealth of content available in its expansions.

3 Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a spin-off game from the Borderlands franchise. If you've played those games, you'll be familiar with the general style, but even if you haven't there's plenty to enjoy here. Basically, it features a legally-safe version of Dungeons and Dragons, where Tiny Tina creates the fantastical world that you venture through as the D&D character.

Your ultimate goal is to defeat the campaign's big bad antagonist: the Dragon Lord. The fantasy aesthetic balances well against the plethora of guns that we've come to expect in a Borderlands game.

2 Final Fantasy 14

Final Fantasy 14 is an MMORPG set in a traditional Final Fantasy-style sci-fi fantasy world. After creating your character from a variety of races and Jobs, you can explore the land of Eorzea with your friends and strangers, taking on Dungeons, Raids, and other challenges.

The entirety of the base game of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, and the game's first two expansions, Heavensward and Stormblood, can be played entirely for free. This means you can adventure up to level 70 without ever spending a cent. If you're looking for a massive MMO that is constantly growing, Final Fantasy 14 is definitely one of the best.

1 The Elder Scrolls Online

Set in the expansive continent of Tamriel, The Elder Scrolls Online is an MMORPG that allows players to explore locations from previous Elder Scrolls games like Oblivion and Skyrim, as well as new areas original to ESO.

With a focus on questing and exploration, fans of the single-player Elder Scrolls games will feel right at home, while being able to journey together with friends and other players. Fans new and old will definitely find something to enjoy in ESO.
