One of the greatest monsters of all time is the mummy. Introduced to western culture in the 1800s, mummies were originally mostly female and served as love interests. However, that all changed in 1932 when Boris Karloff took on his iconic role in Universal's The Mummy.

Nowadays, mummies have pretty much disappeared from popular culture since the 2017 Tom Cruise movie bombed. However, these wrapped-up undead have continued to appear in tabletop and video games. So let's take a look at the video game mummies that have risen above all the rest.

11 The Immortals - Jet Set Radio Future

Three members of The Immortals threatening the player

The Immortals are a rival gang to the main character in Jet Set Radio Future. They're wrapped up in bandages, with only their left eye visible. On top of this, they wear brown fedoras, beige shorts, and gold jewelry.

The only reason these stylish dudes aren't higher on the list is that, well, they aren't actually mummies. They are a bunch of guys dressed like mummies. So The Immortals enter this list as an honorable mention.

10 Lucky - Animal Crossing

Visiting lucky in their Egyptian-themed home

Animal Crossing is filled with a variety of villagers that range from the mundane to the fantastical, and one of the cutest is Lucky: a dog that is completely wrapped up in bandages. However, he's considered lucky because, despite all that damage, he's still standing! Even his initial phrase when you greet him is "rrrrr-owch."

While this may just seem like a dog that is prone to injury, there are plenty of hints that Lucky may just be a mummy dog. His home in Wild World is Egyptian themed and even though this theming didn't carry on to New Horizons, it's still made to look like a cemetery. So who's to say that Lucky is anything but a mummy dog?

9 Mummies - Metal Slug

For a list of mummies, there is a major lack of generic enemies. They just aren't usually that memorable. However, the mummies in Metal Slug are different. They're unique in that they don't actually kill the player, instead opting to turn them into mummies as well.

This changes your gameplay completely, making the character move slower and face delays when firing or throwing a grenade, which is dangerous for one of the best run-n'-gun series of all time. On top of this, there are a few different forms including dog mummies! Maybe this is where Lucky came from...

8 Chuck D. Head - Decap Attack

Chuck D. Head moving away from a monkey

Decap Attack is yet another oft-forgotten mascot platformer from the early '90s. However, instead of going for cute or cool, the people at Vic Tokai decided to go for macabre and introduced the world to Chuck D. Head.

Chuck was created by Dr. Frank N. Stein in order to battle Max D. Cap. He is a mummy that has his head in his chest instead of on his neck. In order to attack, he either shoots his face out of his chest or can collect a skull that he throws from his shoulders. This game is actually a lot of fun, so if you have a Sega Genesis or a Genesis collection disc give this one a shot!

7 Kiya - MediEvil 2

Sir Daniel Foresque, Professor Hamilton Kift, and Princess Kya

Our macabre theme continues with the MediEvil series. While Sir Daniel Fortisque is most well-known for his first game, the sequel is surprisingly just as good. On top of that, you get introduced to a lot of great characters like Professor Hamilton Kift and Princess Kiya.

Princess Kiya was the 91st consort of Rameses II and was buried with him when she died. Over 3,000 years later, she was released from her tomb by Sir Dan and used her embalming skills to help build Dankenstein with the Professor.

6 Mort - Chibi-Robo! Plug Into Adventure!

A closeup on Mort's face

Chibi-Robo! Plug Into Adventure! is all about the titular Chibi-Robo helping the toys in the Sanderson household. One of those toys is a mummy named Mort. He lives in a shoebox under Jenny Sanderson's bed, and he is in love with Princess Pitts.

There is a problem, though. Like most people, Princess Pitts is terrified by Mort's appearance. On top of this, whenever he tries to pick flowers to give to her, they instantly die. It's actually very sad, but it's this sadness that makes his success in the end so much more satisfying.

5 Tutankhamen - Sphinx And The Cursed Mummy

Sphinx And The Cursed Mummy is an underrated action-adventure game from the sixth generation of consoles. Taking place in Egypt, the story follows two characters as they attempt to save the world from the evil god Set. These heroes are the demigod Sphinx and the recently mummified Tutankhamen. Yes, that Tutankhamen.

Where most mummies are scary or attractive, King Tut is goofy with his lanky limbs and expressive face. Instead of engaging in combat like Sphinx, Tutankhamen is all about sneaking around and solving puzzles. It's a lot of fun and worth checking out if you're a fan of duo classics like Jak And Daxter and Ratchet And Clank.

4 Master Mummy - ARMS

When a game is all about stretching your arms as far as they can go, you know that a mummy is going to make an appearance. And in ARMS, that mummy is appropriately named Master Mummy. Reanimated by Dr. Coyle, Master Mummy has amnesia and only knows that he wants to get back to his wife and son.

In battle, Master Mummy is a beast. Known as "The Grim Creeper," he has the strongest grab in the game, dealing 200 damage. On top of this, his block creates super armor and makes it so he won't flinch. Master Mummy is a tank and can easily destroy any opponent he corners.

3 Anakaris - Darkstalkers

Anakaris stretching his bandaged arms into a snake head

Darkstalkers is a cult favorite fighting game from Capcom that takes place in a gothic horror universe where every combatant is a different monster. You'll be facing off against vampires, succubi, werewolves, and, of course, a mummy. Said mummy is Anakaris, a great Pharaoh who was resurrected 5,000 years later. Despite this, his one goal is to protect his kingdom. This means he often travels back and forth between Ancient Egypt and modern times.

Anakaris is massive and uses his bandages as well as transforming his opponents into smaller versions of themselves. He also has one of the best victory quotes of all time: "You are not worthy to clean my tomb!" Anakarais is a unique character that is a worthy addition to Capcom's list of incredible fighting game warriors.

2 Kan-Ra - Killer Instinct (2013)

The final member of our trio of fighting mummies, Kan-Ra was an evil Babylonian sorcerer who was cursed to wander the world as a decaying corpse after he failed to assassinate his king. But this hasn't stopped his quest for ultimate power, having summoned two shadow lords since then.

In battle, Kan-Ra works with every mummy stereotype out there: whipping around with bandages, manipulating sand with magic, and summoning various insects. Kan-Ra is terrifying and easily the most sinister mummy on this list.

1 Amumu - League Of Legends

Surprise Party Amumu not being able to attend his own party, Amumu making a friend out of his wrappings in a desert

Kan-Ra may be sinister, but there is really nothing quite like an adorable tragic figure - and no character in any game is as cute or as sad as Amumu from League Of Legends. Although there are a few different tales regarding his origin, one thing remains true: he is doomed to walk the Earth searching for a friend, even though his touch will kill someone instantly.

That's easily one of the most depressing things you'll see in a game, especially when it's happening to someone that looks as cute as Amumu. Even the official art is sad, showing Amumu alone at prom, using a teeter-totter by himself, and even standing outside a home looking at his own surprise party. There may be scarier and stronger mummies out there, but none of them will make you feel for them quite like Amumu.
