The Fighting-type is one of the best offensive types in Pokemon. Aside from being tied with the Ground-type for dealing super-effective damage to the most types (five: Normal, Rock, Ice, Steel, Dark), Fighting-type Pokemon also generally have a lot of firepower to them. All that said, how will it fare by itself, with no other types attached to it?

While it's not great defensively in a vacuum, its weaknesses will be pretty easy to look out for if you know where to look. Game Freak has also made it a point, for whatever reason, to keep adding pure Fighting-types, all the way up to Generation VIII, so there's always going to be choices for them should you need them. It's just a matter of which ones are the best of the bunch.

Falinks Using No Retreat, Pokemon Sword And Shield

One of the newest Fighting-types just manages to squeak into the list ahead of Hitmonchan and fellow Galar Pokemon Grapploct. While the other two have better stats, Falinks has one thing going for it: No Retreat. Falinks' novel signature move gives it a boost in every stat besides accuracy and evasion, in exchange for not being able to switch out.

It's a risky proposition, but if you can execute it in the right situation, Falinks can sweep the other team pretty easily. The thing is, if you execute it against the wrong opponent, you're very likely to get it knocked out, especially since its stats are pretty subpar as alluded to. Take what you will from its Battle Armor ability for its defensive capabilities.

9 Hitmonlee - Low Tier

Hitmonlee has some attributes that could potentially make it a pretty decent sweeper in lower tiers. It's got high Attack and Special Defense, and a wide array of STAB physical moves to work with, like Close Combat, High Jump Kick, and Mach Punch. All that said, its main competitive schtick is its ability: Unburden.

Unburden users are kind of a wild card since they're supposed to lose their item and ride the given Speed boost until the wheels fall off. That's certainly the case with Hitmonlee, as it heavily relies on Unburden's effects to boost its otherwise mediocre 87 Speed. If Hitmonlee hits a wall as it sweeps through the opposing team, it's essentially useless.

8 Hitmontop - Low - Mid Tier

Bea's Hitmontop from the Pokemon Anime

The latest addition to the Hitmon- trio has proven to be the best one thanks to multiple factors. First of which is its stat spread. Despite having the lowest Speed stat of the three, it has the best balance of offensive power and defense on both ends, with multiple avenues of boosting either side with the help of a held item or maxing out certain EVs.

That said, it's best used as a balanced utility Pokemon that mainly provides support with moves like Toxic and Rapid Spin, but can provide offense in a pinch with STAB physical attacks like Close Combat or High Jump Kick. Another benefit of using Hitmontop is the superior ability: Intimidate, which is less taxing than Hitmonlee's Unburden and downright better than any of Hitmonlee's ability choices.

7 Hariyama - Mid Tier

This sumo wrestler from Generation III is an all-out attacker thanks to its huge 120 Attack stat. It's got a wide array of both STAB and coverage moves including Close Combat, Cross Chop, and Superpower for the former, and Iron Head, Stone Edge, and all three elemental Punches for the latter.

Most of its other stats are pretty bad, aside from its HP which is even higher at 144. Alongside all that, it's got the rare privilege of having three solid abilities to choose from, depending on its role on a team: Sheer Force and Guts for boosting its offensive power, and Thick Fat for making it more reliable as a tank by softening the damage of Fire- and Ice-type moves.

6 Passimian - Mid Tier

Passimian Pokemon Sun Moon

Passimian's role in its metagame is pretty straightforward: provide offense wherever necessary. It has a great 120 Attack and one of the widest movepools among Fighting-types. It can pull off coverage moves not commonly seen such as Seed Bomb, Earthquake, Iron Head, Gunk Shot, and U-Turn. It also helps that in case it gets hit with a stray stat drop, it boosts its Attack by two stages thanks to the Defiant ability.

How that movepool and Attack stat are utilized depends on the player's choices. Most users have opted for a Choice Scarf to improve its somewhat lackluster 80 Speed. While it can work just fine in lower tiers, it will have a hard time standing out against other offensive Pokemon that have more to offer.

5 Machamp - Mid - High Tier

Machamp flexing its four arms in the Pokemon anime

Machamp has two very interesting options on how it can execute its role as a powerful physical attacker. They both rely on two of its abilities: Guts and No Guard. If you opt to run a set with Guts, it just needs a Flame Orb and four choice attacking moves to take advantage of getting an Attack boost when it has a status effect.

If you're more interested in running a No Guard set, simply go for the strongest moves you can find regardless of their accuracy. Either will work great thanks to its 130 Attack stat, but be wary of its alarming lack of Speed. (Tip: the latter set works awesome with Dynamic Punch, which will guarantee confusion.)

4 Sirfetch'd - High Tier

Sirfetch'd Pokemon Sword Shield

In the early days of Generation VIII's metagame, Sirfetch'd was a pretty solid Fighting-type attacker mainly thanks to its array of coverage moves that happens to be even wider than Passimian's. It has access to some of the strongest physical moves of other types, such as Leaf Blade, Brave Bird, and First Impression.

It's also got the highest Attack stat so far at 135, and an excellent attacking ability in Scrappy that allows it to hit Ghost-types with STAB moves. Most Sirfetch'd users opt to give it a Choice Band to make it an even deadlier attack than it already is. It helps having a decent 95 Defense stat to take a hit before hitting back harder.

3 Mienshao - High Tier

Mienshao entering battle in the Pokémon Anime

Mienshao has a bizarre pairing of stats that are best for sweeping -- namely 125 Attack, 95 Special Attack, and 105 Speed -- and an ability that's best used on defensive walls, Regenerator. There isn't a Pokemon-to-ability combo quite like it, and it makes Mienshao stand out quite a bit amongst the saturated market of offensive Fighting-types.

Attack, take hits, switch out, regenerate, repeat. Of course, watch out for Pokemon that happen to be faster, but continue that process whenever appropriate. Do so with the help of STAB moves like High Jump Kick and Drain Punch, and a decent pool of coverage moves like Acrobatics and Stone Edge. It also helps having nice utility attacking moves like Knock Off and Fake Out, and especially U-Turn to more safely switch out.

2 Conkeldurr (High Tier)

Among all the Pokemon with Guts, Conkeldurr stands out as the prototype of that bunch, having the necessary moves and stats to make the most out of that ability. It has an incredible 140 Attack stat, and a rock solid learnset containing offensive moves like Close Combat, Drain Punch, Facade, and even Mach Punch to make up for its lackluster Speed.

The thing is, using Guts on Conkeldurr can be quite predictable. Fortunately, there are other solid abilities it can run with to shake things up a bit: Iron Fist and Sheer Force. A lot of Conkeldurr's moves benefit from either ability: Mach Punch and Power-Up Punch for the former, Poison Jab and Rock Slide for the latter, and the elemental punches, Dynamic Punch, and Drain Punch for both.

1 Zamazenta (High Tier)

The only pure Fighting-type Legendary aside from the not fully evolved Kubfu, Zamazenta is an easy choice for the best of that specific typing. It's not merely here by default, though; Zamazenta is incredibly powerful. Even when not in its Crowned forme, Zamazenta still has access to Dauntless Shield, which gives it a Defense boost upon switching in.

Despite what that might tell you, it's a mighty fine attacker at 130 Attack, with the STAB and coverage moves to boot. It might not be as overpowered as Zacian, but Zamazenta can still hold its own in Smogon's Ubers competitive tier. In fact, it works essentially as a Fighting-type version of its counterpart, having the exact same stat spread.
