Machi Koro - 5th Anniversary Edition
Best Adaptable Board Game

Mayoral duties without the paperwork

Machi Koro puts you in the shoes of a mayor handling a bustling, expanding township. Meet the demands of your people, battle other mayors, or even play solo!

Pros
  • Can be played solo or in groups
  • Quick, simple instructions

Machi Koro puts the players in the shoes of a mayor overseeing a developing and expanding township. Citizens will demand certain amenities or improvements, from jobs to entertainment institutions. Games are controlled by dice and winners can usually snowball, with the winner being whoever constructs all their landmarks first.

This game plays best with four players, but many enjoy this game solo. You can set goals or timers on how fast you can finish your landmarks and practice up for the next time you face your friends.

Sushi Go! card game box
Sushi Go!
Quickest Card Game

Just like the dish itself

Sushi Go! is a deck-building card game for 2–5 players. The aim of the game is to create a deck of cards that totals up to give you the most points. Certain cards react with each other to create multipliers and combos. At the end of the round, all players must reveal their cards and tally the points.

Much like real sushi, Sushi Go! is a speedy card-based game that can be finished pretty fast. As long as you're decent at math, one game shouldn't last more than 15 minutes approximately. To add to that, the art may just make you hungry enough to finish the game off sooner. Keep this one around for a quick break from work.

Ticket to Ride board game box
Ticket To Ride
Best Train-Based Board Game

Take the express train

Ticket to Ride may look intimidating with its detailed board and many little pieces. But, you can easily knock out a game in one 45-60 minute train journey. The thing with this game is that each player will know what they want to do, and won't spend too much time pondering.

Pros
  • Great for people who love trains.
  • Easy ruleset and simple gameplay.
Cons
  • Numerous pieces make it hard to travel with.

Ticket to Ride plays more like an express train than one that stops at every station. While the large board looks intimidating, its claim to fame is simple gameplay that streamlines rounds. You can learn this game and finish up a round in under an hour, with subsequent games only getting faster.

Exploding Kittens Card Game Box
Exploding Kittens
Best Fast-Paced Card Game

Play it at explosive speed

It would be pretty anticlimactic if a game that's called Exploding Kittens would have slow-paced gameplay. Thankfully, in a bid to avoid or defuse the Exploding Kitten, the card game tends to move pretty quickly. Most games barely last more than 15 minutes, and tend to be shorter with fewer players.

Pros
  • Cute and funny art.
  • Great to play with kids.
  • Has multiple editions.

This card game is played at the speed of an exploding kitten. Games tend to get faster once you get used to the funny and cute art. Should you happen to be the unlucky player to draw an Exploding Kitten card, make sure you waste no time in dropping a Defuse card. Games do tend to get longer with more players.

Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 board game box
Pandemic Legacy: Season 1
Best Strategy Board Game

If only the healthcare system was this good

Thankfully, unlike the real pandemic, Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 isn't a game that goes on for too long. It has a lot of cities marked out on the board, a number of pieces, as well as a layered ruleset, but an average game doesn't go on for longer than 45 - 60 minutes.

Pros
  • High-stakes gameplay where each move must be carefully considered.
Cons
  • May bring up some bad memories.

Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 is suited for up to 4 players and tells a story over about 12-24 sessions. Experienced groups can knock a session out in under an hour, but you should set aside some time to learn. Once you can get games going quickly enough, your group can knock out a few story sessions a night.

Experienced board game enthusiasts likely won't struggle to learn, but to newcomers to the field, it can seem hard to approach. Focus on learning what actions you can take on your turn, your specialist's skills, and each round's goals to help games go quicker while you learn.

Codenames card game box
Codenames
Best Party Game

Not too long to stay undercover.

Using alphanumeric codes to make a whole team of people guess which card to pick up sounds like it would take a while, especially at a party. However, Codenames still manages to keep games as short as 15 to 30 minutes. It's great for a quick few games before everyone starts dancing.

Pros
  • Great for creating chaos at parties.
  • Highly replayable.
  • No real skills required.

Hopefully, real spymasters have a much better system of getting in touch with their spies than what Codenames makes it out to seem. Regardless, it's at least much quicker the way the game does it. Each game of Codenames doesn't last for more than 15 to 30 minutes.

Azul board game box
Azul
Best Tile-Placement Game

Tiling the time away

Azul's gameplay loop is pretty simple. There's not much thought that needs to go into matching and strategically placing tiles. In fact, like Sushi Go!, you may end up spending more time tallying up your score than actually playing the game. But that is in no way hinders Azul's strategically engaging gameplay.

Pros
  • Pretty looking tiles and board.
  • Simple puzzle mechanics.
Cons
  • A maximum of four players only.

Azul's tile-placement gameplay ensures that each game doesn't last longer than 30 to 45 minutes. Once you build up enough steam, it's only a matter of matching more tiles and continuing combos.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Best Hidden Role Game

One Night Ultimate Werewolf is based on the classic hidden role formula. One or more players, depending on the overall player count, will play the role of the werewolves who need to be weeded out. The twist with this game is that some players have special abilities which can help in narrowing down the traitors.

Pros
  • A unique twist on the hidden role formula.
  • Stunning artwork.
  • Manipulating everyone is fun.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf brings its own twist to the classic hidden role formula. If you enjoy deceiving and manipulating your friends (harmlessly, of course), then this game is ideal. Lie and gaslight your way to victory as a werewolf or master your abilities as a villager.

A standard game can take less than ten minutes, depending on your group. Much of the time comes from deliberating who is or isn't a werewolf. This game is suited for as few as three or as many as ten, which can drastically change the time it takes to play.

Santorini board game box
Santorini
Best Abstract Strategy Board Game

By the gods!

Santorini blends elements of strategy and building, wrapped in a layer of Greek mythology. Your aim is to get on top of a three-story tower. Timing is crucial, as you may just end up helping your opponent. And, of course, Greek mythology wouldn't be much fun without a bit of meddling by the gods!

Pros
  • Features multiple expansions.
  • Unique board setup.
  • Great artwork on the cards.

In Santorini, you'll build a city in a setting inspired by Grecian myth. Unique god powers, interesting movement rules, and meddlesome gods will challenge you on your way to the top of the three-story tower. This one's quick to learn and quicker to play, with experienced groups knocking out full rounds in under half an hour.

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza
Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza
Best Simple Quick Game

Skill-based time management

The beauty of Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza is that the game speeds up depending on your skill. If you manage to keep the rhythm going and don't make any mistakes, you could go through a game in under five minutes. However, it takes more time if one of you is constantly making mistakes and picking up cards.

Pros
  • Simple ruleset, but hard to play at a high level.
  • The stakes are raised with every card put down.
  • Multiple themed editions.

If you keep the game going by saying the right words and performing the right actions, you could get in at least two to three games of Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza during your coffee break. The game only pauses when one of you gets it wrong, forcing you to add all the cards on the table to your deck.

Azul board game box
Azul
Best Quick Tile Placement

Not all art requires time.

$32 $40 Save $8

They say art takes time, but if you tase too long putting your mosaic together in Azul, you might end up losing. Despite its slow-natured gameplay, a decently contested game shouldn't take you upwards of 45 minutes. it goes without saying that the better you are at it, the faster the game goes.

Pros
  • Beautifully designed tiles.
  • Competitive, yet allows you to do your own thing.
  • Features a great spin-off based on chocolates.

A game where placing tiles to create patterns might seem like a slow burn, but a game of Azul will barely go over an hour even for beginners. Once you train yourself to see the right patterns and learn how to work towards them, you'll be rushing through games in about 30 minutes at max. While you learn, expect games to take closer to an hour, especially as competition ramps up.
