Video game mechanics are characters you’ll want to keep on your side thanks to their useful abilities, as they can make and fix lots of machinery. Whether a new mode of transportation or a powerful weapon upgrade, these mechanics prove what’s so great about their chosen profession.

Despite sharing this key similarity, video game mechanics come in a range of designs and all have unique personalities. They can be a sweet but deadly mechanic who works with scrap metal or a young fox with a passion for inventing gadgets. Mechanics are indispensable when it comes to thinking up a new invention to help you on whatever journey you’re on.

10 Family Business — Slippy Toad (Star Fox Series)

This amphibious mechanic is a key part of the Star Fox team, and an invaluable asset when it comes to creating new inventions. The most notable of these is the Arwing aircraft that he and his father made as part of Space Dynamics Co. Ltd.

As the comic relief character, Slippy is surprisingly well-informed about the topic of mechanics. He’s able to make inventions using the most limited of resources, like when he made the Blue-Marine with only scrap metal. Slippy is also able to perform repairs on the Star Fox team’s vehicles after tough battles.

9 Passion Never Dies — Cid Pollendina (Final Fantasy 4)

Final Fantasy 4 is the first game in the series where you can play as the recurring Cid character, with Cid Pollendina a playable party member. Many of the Cid characters in Final Fantasy take on the role of mechanic, and Cid Pollendina is no exception.

Continuing the series’ legacy of Cid characters and flight, this boisterous mechanic has a fascination with airships. He makes the Enterprise, the first airship you use in the game. Even in Final Fantasy 4: The After Years, set almost 20 years after the original game, Cid maintains his passion for mechanics — despite being in his 70s.

8 Robot Ring Leader — Tron Bonne (Mega Man Legends Series)

One of the antagonists of the Mega Man series, Tron Bonne is a talented mechanic who has created many inventions — despite only being 14 years old — to help the Bonne family in their villainous schemes. She is the inventor of machines such as the Gesellschaft airship and the Servbots, a group of adorable robots who are loyal to her and the Bonne family.

In her own game, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, you use Tron’s inventions to aid you on her mission, alongside her horde of Servbots — who are always by her side.

7 Howdy! — Ellie (Borderlands 2 And 3)

When you’re first introduced to Ellie in Borderlands 2, she’s busy murdering someone for disrespecting her. The game tells you that Ellie enjoys cuddling and murder, which is quite the introduction. Alongside these hobbies, Ellie also likes making and fixing things.

Ellie owns a garage located in The Dust and she will help you to create a vehicle, gathering the parts needed and making it a reality. This mechanic is a sweet and helpful NPC — just don’t get on her bad side, or you’ll end up in the car crusher.

6 Rebellious Streak — Robin (Iconoclasts)

Robin is the main character of the platformer Iconoclasts. The people of Iconoclasts live under the dictatorship of the One Concern, who assign people roles to perform and punish them if they deviate from them. Despite not having a government-assigned occupation, Robin practices mechanics in spite of the risk.

Taking after her late father, Polro, who was a licensed mechanic, Robin is skilled at handling machinery. In the game, she can use her Wrench to perform different actions, like hanging from nuts and controlling machines.

5 The Royals’ Personal Mechanic — Cindy Aurum (Final Fantasy 15)

Cindy Aurum is a lively mechanic located at Hammerhead Garage. You'll want to visit thus location in Final Fantasy 15 to get your car, the Regalia, serviced, customized and upgraded. As the head mechanic, she’s passionate about her job and strives to improve the business, focusing on her work rather than her many admirers.

Cindy was raised by her grandfather, Cid Sophiar, who passed down his knowledge of mechanics and helped her to succeed in the family business. She carries on Final Fantasy’s long-standing tradition of engineers and mechanics named Cid, as her Japanese name is “Cidney”.

4 Wrench In The Works — Andy (Advance Wars)

Andy is one of the main characters in the Advance Wars games, a series of tactical RPGs where you battle it out against an opposing army. He definitely looks the part, wearing classic mechanic overalls, and is often pictured holding a large wrench.

Many of Andy’s abilities revolve around his mechanic skills, such as Hyper Repair, which heals his Units and boosts their defense. He’s also known to mention his occupation in his dialogue, saying things like “I’ve got parts to spare!” He’s a useful mechanic you’ll be glad to have on your side.

3 Extraterrestrial Mechanic — Ratchet (Ratchet & Clank Series)

One half of the iconic Ratchet and Clank duo, Ratchet is an expert mechanic who uses the OmniWrench to protect the planet from the forces of evil. Using his abilities, Ratchet made his own ship, which led him to meet Clank, who was impressed by his mechanic talents.

Ratchet’s identity as a mechanic is central to his character, as many of his attacks in the game focus on his ability to wield various items of equipment. Ratchet is also a passionate inventor, creating devices such as a nuclear-powered rocket sled and Stunderwear, a pair of electroshock underwear, using the limited resources available to him.

2 Smart And Adorable — Tails (Sonic the Hedgehog Series)

Tails is one of Sonic’s closest companions in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and a skilled mechanic, despite his initial lack of confidence. Tails’ inventions have saved Sonic and his friends countless times, and he has proven his skills and intelligence on many occasions. This includes when he created the fake Chaos Emerald in Sonic Adventure 2.

1 Genius Inventor — Lucca (Chrono Trigger)

Lucca is Crono’s childhood friend and one of the party members in Chrono Trigger, known for her mechanic abilities and love of inventing and fixing things. She created the Telepod that kickstarts the party’s journey through time, and fixes Robo, a robot from 2300 AD.

Lucca plays a large role in the game’s story, often using her intelligence to help the party overcome challenging situations. This includes making the Gate Key that allows you to control the Time Gates and travel through time. Her creativity and passion for mechanics is one of the many characteristics that makes Lucca stand out in an incredible cast.
