Updated by Gabrielle Huston on October 22, 2022: In honor of the spookiest season of the year, we thought we'd spruce up this article about the best witches you can meet in video games! There are a few more names here that you're sure to recognize.

13 The Witch from Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley - witch flying over the player's farm

In Stardew Valley, you encounter a Wizard who becomes your friend and helps you understand the magical happenings around town. Eventually, he may open up to you about his ex-wife, who was so angry at him about something that she turned green and stole his Magic Ink. Now, she's known only as 'the Witch.'

Despite the vague and mysterious backstory - and the fact that some people think she may secretly be another character, Caroline - Stardew Valley's Witch ranks at the bottom of this list because, despite her anger, she doesn't do much except for occasionally cursing your farm. Plus, all of her coolest powers seem to come from some altars she owns, not her own abilities.

12 Koume and Kotake from The Legend of Zelda

Koume and Kotake are two witches that recur throughout The Legend of Zelda franchise. Unlike some of the other witches on this list, they're not villainous. They genuinely try and help Link on his adventures.

They are loyal to King Ganondorf. Koume has fire powers and Kotake has ice powers, represented by their red and blue flames. In Ocarina of Time, you'll find them in the Spirit Temple and in Majora's Mask, you'll meet them at a cabin in the Southern Swamp where they operate a magic shop and boat cruise at the swamp's tourist center.

11 Gruntilda from the Banjo-Kazooie

Gruntilda is the main villain in the Banjo-Kazooie series. She looks like the typical fairytale witch, complete with a pointed black hat, green skin, a crooked nose, and facial warts. 10 Cackletta from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Her goal in Superstar Saga is complete and total world domination. She's cruel and delightfully unhinged. She's even powerful enough to possess Bowser himself, calling herself "Bowletta" when she does so. Her other abilities include dark magic, fire breathing, and the power to summon meteors.

9 The Witches from Left 4 Dead

The Witch from Left 4 Dead

You'll find witches, which are a type of infected human, throughout your adventures in the Left 4 Dead series. They appear as skinny young women with long, lanky hair and typically try and hide their faces. You'll know a witch is nearby based on the loud, eerie, high-pitch shrieking sound they make followed by their specific musical cue.

8 Witch of Hemwick from Bloodborne

The Witch of Hemwick is a terrifying boss you'll encounter in Bloodborne. The "witch" is an old lady with eyeballs adorning her entire body, supposedly collected from the living. The fight can be especially tricky as she will cast a clone and you'll have to defeat both versions of the witch.

Once defeated, you'll be able to use runes. She will also summon henchmen and fight with magical explosions and a stunning spell. While the mechanics of the battle are relatively straightforward, it can still be a tricky battle.

7 Morrigan from Dragon Age

Morrigan with post-combat blood spatter.

Morrigan is one of your valuable companions in the first Dragon Age game, Origins, and reappears in the third game, Inquisition, as an advisor. She's known as a 'Witch of the Wilds;' over the years, many legends about witches have risen out of the Korcari Wilds in Southern Ferelden. Some are specific, while others are more vague, but they all share one moral: don't mess with these women.

The legends are true: you should try to stay on Morrigan's good side. Not only is she a powerful shapeshifter, but she's also very learned, having studied the ancient elven civilization and unlocked one of their Eluvians. It's no surprise that this badass woman is a fan-favorite character.

6 Alicia from Bullet Witch

Bullet Witch is a third-person shooter released on Xbox 360. Players control the witch Alicia Claus who attempts to help survivors in deserted cities after demons begin attacking earth, entering via a portal created accidentally by an archaeologist.

She is assisted by a demonic entity of her own known simply as "Darkness," that gifts her with special abilities that let her fight against the forces of evil. She must try and stave off the extinction of humankind before it's too late.

5 Yennefer of Vengerberg from The Witcher

Yennefer of Vengerberg is Geralt's soulmate and one of the main female characters in The Witcher series. She is a mother to Ciri and an extremely gifted sorceress. Not only is Yennefer capable of incredible magic, but she is also able to conjure dark magic when she needs to -- including necromancy.

She was recruited for the Lodge of Sorceresses but Yennefer didn't join due to their desire to use Ciri to further their own agenda. But she did advise King Demavend and she was a member of the Supreme Council of Sorcerers

4 Triss Merigold from The Witcher

Triss Merigold is a powerful sorceress in The Witcher series and one of Geralt's two main paramours. While playing The Witcher 3, you'll have a choice to become romantic with either Triss or Yennefer, you can attempt to get both women but it won't end well for Geralt if you do.

Not only was she once a council member for King Foltest, but she was also one of the founding members of the Lodge of Sorceresses. Triss is extremely skilled at alchemy, although she doesn't take potions herself.

3 Bayonetta

Bayonetta in Bayonetta 2

Whether you know her game because it's been called one of the best games of all time, or because of the criticism it's received for such a sexualized female protagonist, you're probably familiar with this classic video game character. Bayonetta is a witch who stars in a video game named after her, in which she strives to get her memories back after a 500-year slumber.

Bayonetta's powers are both physical and magical. She can wield any weapon with ease - though she's known for her pistols - and performs acrobatic moves gracefully in the heat of battle. On the magical side of things, she's been known to speed up time for herself (causing her enemies to appear in slow-motion), transform into animals like panthers and snakes, and dismiss gravity to walk on any surface (whenever it's a full moon).

2 Chaos Witch from Dark Souls

Chaos Witch Quelaag is a tough and haunting boss battle in Dark Souls. The "witch" in question is only half-human and half-spider, as if a demonic magical entity wasn't scary enough on its own, it had to be mixed with a creepy arachnid.

She is one of Witch of Izalith's daughters, sadly she was mutated by the Flames of Chaos. But the reason she fights is in an attempt to protect her sister. Her powers are fire-based, including fire waves, lava breath, and more deadly heat-based attacks.

1 Flemeth from Dragon Age

Flemeth in Dragon Age II.

Flemeth is the mother of Morrigan, the witch we mentioned previously. Unlike Morrigan, some of those legends about the Witches of the Wilds refer to Flemeth by name. They tell a tale of a woman who ran from her husband when she fell in love with a traveling bard. They ran away together, but Flemeth eventually received word that her husband was dying and wished to see her face one final time before he passed. She returned to his side, but it was a trap, and her husband killed the bard. Flemeth used her magical powers to murder her husband and his men before running away to hide in the Kocari Wilds and raise generations of other witches.

She ranks as the most powerful on this list because she's practically a god; in Inquisition, we learn that Flemeth is actually a human woman with the spirit of an ancient elven woman resting inside her: Mythal. Mythal is thought by modern elves to be a god, but she was actually just a very powerful general when the elven empire was at the peak of its power.
