With his skeleton outlined with near unbreakable adamantium, Wolverine is among the most durable Marvel characters. Like many Marvel characters, he features in quite a few video games alongside his film, television, and comic appearances.

Along with his razor-sharp claws, Wolverine can skewer anything or anyone in his path. In celebration of such a cool character, here are the best games that have featured Wolverine.

8 The Uncanny X-Men

The-Uncanny-X-Men

Based on the famous comic line of the same name, The Uncanny X-Men was the first game that featured Marvel’s mutant hero team. Published by LJN for the NES, The Uncanny X-Men was also loosely based on the animated pilot X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men in 1989. Unfortunately, The Uncanny X-Men has been regarded as one of the worst NES games of all time, but it’s important to remember your roots and where you came from.

Other than Wolverine, the game also featured Nightcrawler, Colossus, Cyclops, Iceman, and Storm. You are tasked with completing missions by utilizing the various mutant powers and fighting against various evil mutants that included Magneto and Juggernaut. Although the game wasn’t received well when it launched, it’s essentially the jumping-off point for all future X-Men games.

7 Wolverine: Adamantium Rage

Wolverine Adamantium Rage

Even in the early 1990s, certain video games were developed for more than one system. In 1994, Wolverine: Adamantium Rage launched on both the Super SNES and Sega Genesis. Interestingly enough, the two editions vary in a few key areas, but overall, the gameplay and story remains generally the same.

Ultimately, the public gravitated more toward the Super SNES version of the game instead of the Genesis edition. While both games feature Logan traveling through Canada trying to unearth details of his past, the Nintendo version offers different move sets and the Genesis edition is a bit more lenient with Logan’s in-game lives. Regardless, Wolverine: Adamantium Rage is an interesting look into the mutant’s backstory.

6 Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: Black Order

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 Black Order

The third installment of the Ultimate Alliance series is arguably the best one. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: Black Order follows a collection of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes trying to prevent Thanos from collecting the Infinity Stones. The game is loosely based on the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, as well as the Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although Wolverine isn’t a central character in Black Order, his inclusion in the game allows us to feature it here. The gameplay for each character is relatively the same with standard light and heavy attacks mixed with a few special abilities. Black Order launched to a generally positive reception, though fans had hoped there would’ve been more drastic improvements.

5 Lego Marvel Superheroes

Given the initial success of Lego Star Wars in the mid-2000s, it was only a matter of time before the Marvel brand received the same treatment. Finally, in 2013, fans were able to play as their favorite Marvel characters in block form, including, Wolverine.

In the game, Wolverine is first spotted investigating The Raft, a super-prison for villains. Upon seeing the mutant, Iron Man tells the other heroes that Wolverine is a good guy, even if he doesn’t smell like one. Brushing the comment aside, Wolverine joins up with the other Avengers and Fantastic Four members in defeating the villains and saving the planet from Galactus.

4 X-Men Vs. Street Fighter

X-Men Vs. Street Fighter

Capcom is famous for their fighting games, particularly Street Fighter, so the idea of mixing those martial artists with the mutant superhero team was tantalizing. While X-Men Vs. Street Fighter was Capcom’s third fighting game to feature Marvel heroes, it was the one that started the “Marvel Vs. Capcom” series.

One of the biggest differences in X-Men Vs. Street Fighter is a reduction in the total number of rounds. Instead of the standard best of three, players fiught in a single winner-take-all contest. The game features 17 characters: eight mutants and nine Street Fighters. The best part about the X-Men characters in the game is the fact that their voice actors from the 1990s animated television series are also featured in X-Men Vs. Street Fighter.

3 X-Men Legends 2: Rise Of Apocalypse

The sequel to 2004’s X-Men Legends, Rise of Apocalypse essentially took all the good of its predecessor and made them great. Critics raved about the enhanced gameplay and new mutant powers, as well as the overarching story of the villainous Brotherhood of Mutants having to team up with the X-Men to combat a larger threat. Rise of Apocalypse also introduced online multiplayer that was welcomed with open arms.

Being one of the most popular X-Men characters, it’s only natural that Wolverine is featured in the battle against the powerful Apocalypse. Given his history with Sabretooth and Magneto, it is interesting seeing Logan and the rest of the X-Men having to join forces with them. Luckily, the combined forces of the X-Men and Brotherhood of Mutants were enough to subdue Apocalypse and live to see another day.

2 Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age Of Heroes

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 New Age Of Heroes

Technically the fourth installment of Capcom’s fighting games that feature Marvel heroes, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes is the second entry in the sub-series. After the massive successes of X-Men Vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter, Capcom decided to expand the roster to include other characters outside of the Street Fighter property but still under the Capcom umbrella. That meant characters like Mega Man and Jill Valentine joined the fray.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is arguably one of the best fighting games ever made because of the high-intensity gameplay and special moves. Among the 56 playable characters, Wolverine is the only one that sports two different appearances. And by "appearances," we mean he can either sport his normal adamantium claws or his more savage-looking bone claws.

1 X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men Origins Wolverine

Shockingly, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is one of the best games to feature the mutant. Unlike the film it was based on, X-Men Origins: Wolverine did not disappoint fans, if anything, players were left feeling shocked at the incredible gameplay, which was influenced by other third-person action games like God of War and Devil May Cry.

Similar to other games, X-Men Origins launched on multiple platforms that contain slightly different offerings. The standard edition that launched on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo Wii, and DS were met with mixed criticism, while the Uncaged Edition on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC received more favorable praise. Unfortunately, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, along with any other Marvel games published by Activision, was de-listed and removed digitally because the studio’s license expired.
