So many innovations have hit the video game industry over the past few decades, drastically improving on gameplay systems or visual fidelity. Modern titles look nearly realistic and play incredibly smooth, but some older classics have aged poorly compared to the high standards of today.

Some developers have been gracious enough to develop a remaster for these classic hits that defined the industry all those years ago. Most of them are smash hits that perfectly modernize the original, but some miss the mark so much they create an inferior product compared to the game it's based on. Here are the best and worst remakes made this decade, sorted by critic scores found on Metacritic.

10 Best: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy - 79

Crash Bandicoot is the closest thing PlayStation has to a mascot, having plenty of high-quality games being developed with this personable bandicoot as a playable character.

The remaster Vicarious Visions has done is nothing short of remarkable. The visual fidelity is brought up substantially yet respecting the source material and art style. Levels are just as engaging and replayable as the original title. Any fans of 3D platformers should give this game a try, as the amount of 3D platformers available these days is rather small.

9 Worst: Conker: Live and Reloaded - 78

Conker: Live and Reloaded is a remaster of the cult classic Bad Fur Day. Unfortunately, this remaster removes much of the bite the original was praised for.

Cursing is censored, sections of the game are gone, and the multiplayer modes on offer borrow more from traditional shooter titles like Call of Duty than the original's innovative additions. Certain campaign challenges were questionably removed as well, making this an objectively worse version of the N64 classic it's based on.

8 Best: Halo: The Master Chief Collection - 85

Calling the launch for this game abysmal is an understatement. 343 showed a level of ineptitude unseen beforehand. The campaign would bug out, game modes were missing, and the multiplayer literally didn't function.

But they soldiered on. They have spent years fixing this game, adding other titles and improving on playlists. With its recent release on PC, the game is in fantastic shape, bringing all Halo fans together for an incredible celebration of the series. If you played this game at launch, consider giving it another go. The fixes 343 have done finally brought this game to a high bar of quality rarely seen in the industry today.

7 Worst: GoldenEye 007 Reloaded (2011) - 72

Another N64 classic, GoldenEye 007 made massive innovations to the FPS genre with its well-crafted levels and engaging narrative.

Remastering this classic would require an overhaul to its visuals and core controls. Those changes were made in GoldenEye 007 Reloaded but hurt the game overall. The gimmicky stealth system hurt the game more than it added, and the multiplayer changes here pale in comparison to the N64 version. Stay away from this title.

6 Best: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered - 89

Before you talk about how Activision ruined the multiplayer for this game with loot boxes, look at the state the remaster itself launched in.

With that caveat out of the way, this is one of the best remasters ever made. The visuals pay homage to the original and improve them without changing the art style. Subtle additions to various missions help add continuity between the Modern Warfare trilogy when the devs didn't even need to do so. Raven went above and beyond creating this remaster. You can feel the passion by just playing the campaign or browsing the menus. This is the definite Call of Duty 4 experience.

5 Worst: Medievil (2019) - 67

MediEvil was a great PlayStation action-adventure game with a tongue in cheek Halloween theme. It stood out at the time for its art style and charm, but three generations have passed since its original release.

MediEvil 2019 is a sad attempt of bringing this classic back, opting to use a third-person camera that is unintuitive to use. Combat is as dated as ever, further ruined by inconsistent hitboxes and wonky animations. Unless you are on a nostalgia trip to revisit this classic PS1 title, this game is a hard pass.

4 Best: Shadow Of The Colossus - 91

Not many games can captivate players with over ten minutes of horse riding followed with a boss, but Shadow of the Colossus offered a sense of scale that was unprecedented for that console generation, helping the PlayStation 2 reign supreme as the definite console.

This stunning action-adventure title has been beautifully remastered for the PlayStation 4, running better and with higher fidelity than ever before. Shadow of the Colossus isn't interested in pulse-pounding encounters from minute one to the end like Call of Duty or similar action titles. It instead has short spurts of adrenaline with gigantic boss fights, which are quickly followed with quiet time to reflect on your actions and the next goal. Shadow of the Colossus taught the industry how important pacing is for video games, a lesson that it carries masterfully to this day.

3 Worst: Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop - 61

No one was expecting Dead Rising to be ported from the Xbox 360 to the Wii without some issues or downgrades. No one was also expecting so many compromises to be made, either.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop is a terrible remaster that strips away much of what made the original great. Players can no longer take pictures, which is kind of a big deal because the protagonist—Frank Woods—is a journalist with a trusty camera. The focus has been shifted from open-world exploration to instanced missions with timers that don't reinforce the desperation and anxiety the original did so well. Some bosses are flat out missing, and the focus on firearms makes the game way too easy. This is a great example of how not to remake a classic video game.

2 Best: Resident Evil 2 (2019)- 93

Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2 were phenomenal video games that combined gripping horror with satisfying storytelling and combat. With how dated they are, the visuals and clunky controls hold down the potential horror on screen.

That is why remastering these titles was such an amazing idea, but the execution would be key in making these games a genuine improvement. In an effort to modernize the titles, Resident Evil 2 changed the perspective from set camera angles to an over the shoulder third-person camera. And this change is a masterstroke in design. The horror elements are greater than ever, and the combat has been revitalized from clunky and dated to refreshing yet familiar. Resident Evil 2 is easily the best remaster made this decade.

1 Worst: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled - 60

Turtles in Time Re-Shelled is a great example of how remasters have had their expectations increased throughout the decade.

This remaster increased the visual fidelity with new 3D graphics. Unfortunately, that's about all the game does. Combat was not changed, music was questionably changed or removed, and no new content was created to compensate for the lack of innovation. Re-Shelled feels more dated than the original with combat that is just unbearable compared to the standard set by today's great games and remasters. Shell out on another game instead of this lackluster remake.
