A console lives and dies on its exclusives. Not only that, a console’s exclusives define them. Halo made the Xbox. Gears of War helped to define it. For PlayStation, they had the Infamous and Uncharted series. They are the lifeblood of the console. One of the major ways gamers choose which console to buy is based on the list of exclusives. Granted, PC gamers are too busy laughing at console gamers to care. However, in the console wars, it’s the exclusives that really matter.

Exclusive titles are slowly dropping out of fashion despite their importance. At least, they are for Xbox and PlayStation. Nintendo still has absolute domination over their first-party titles and refuses to even play in the same sandbox as the other console creators, let alone share its toys. The timed exclusive started to take hold a few years back. Yet, the exclusivity trend is declining overall.

Xbox’s current line of exclusive games is… lackluster at best. The number and variety of dedicated Xbox One exclusives needs improvements. However, PlayStation managed to keep a tighter grip when comes to the major and first party games. PlayStation owners are eagerly awaiting the lineup while Xbox fans look on with envy. Granted, both systems have plenty of wonderful crossover games. There are also timed exclusives and console exclusives that the PlayStation shares with the PC gamers. However, these are the real deal. Games that can only be obtained through a PlayStation 4. All aboard the hype train.

20 Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

via youtube.com

The Uncharted series is one of Sony’s major flagship series for their PlayStations. The original trilogy was critically acclaimed and beloved by action-adventure fans. They’re well known for taking the player and putting them in the middle of an Indiana Jones esque story. The big action set pieces, and spectacular vistas feel like you’ve been transported into the big screen movies. The last Uncharted game, Uncharted 4, wrapped up Nathan Drake’s storyline. Consequently, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy will follow Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross. Of course, if the early reviews are to be believed, nothing has been lost with the absence of the series titular character. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy released August 22, 2017. Hold your breath Uncharted fans, you only have a few more days to wait.

19 God Of War

Why God of War Doesn't Have Any Camera Cuts
via VGchartz.com

Kratos is back! The God of War series dates back all the way to the PlayStation 2, but most of the games found their homes on the PlayStation 3. This new title, officially referred to as God of War (unofficially God of War 4), is the first God of War game for the PlayStation 4. The last game released way back in 2013! This time, Kratos won’t be terrorizing the Olympic pantheon. Instead, he has his sights set on the gods of the old Norse myths. God of War is a soft reboot for the series and will follow Kratos and his son Atreus. Lucky for us, the presence of the tyke didn’t stop the developers from filling the game with all the blood and carnage we could hope for. Although there is no set release date for God of War, we do know it should be available during the first quarter of 2018.

18 Final Fantasy VII

via gamesradar.com

Although this not Square Enix’s last fantasy, it’s a remake of the beloved PlayStation classic. However, Square Enix seems to have decided to completely rework the game from the ground up. Not only are the new graphics stunning, they’ve forgone the original turn based strategy for the more modern hack and slash combat. Of course, anyone who paid even the slightest bit of attention to gaming news since 2015 knows that the remake has had a host of development issues and scandals. Final Fantasy VII was announced back in 2015. Even now, we still don’t have a release date. Square Enix confirmed that the story will be episodic, so we can probably expect multiple release dates. Additionally, while the game is confirmed for the PlayStation 4, it may only be a timed exclusive.

Fun Fact: Final Fantasy was going to be Square Enix's last game since they were going bankrupt at the time. Hence the name.

polygon.com

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch was a groundbreaking partnership between Level-5 Inc. and acclaimed animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli. It boasted an average score of 85%. Now, Level-5 is at it again with Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. This game will follow a completely new protagonist and storyline. Unfortunately, Studio Ghibli is not involved in the sequel's production and the game has already been mired by a delayed release date. However, the lead writer is none other than Akihiro Hino. For those who are unaware, he worked on the previous installment of Ni No Kuni as well as other acclaimed games including both Yo-Kai Watch games. It’s safe to say that we can expect great things from this upcoming title. Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is set to release January 19, 2018. Hopefully, there will be no more delays.

16 Death Stranding

via gamespot.com

The nonsense that surround Konami in the past few years made it seem like we’d never get a proper Hideo Kojima game again. This was made especially prominent after Silent Hills was canceled despite the massive popularity of P.T. The reality is that we will likely never see another Hideo Kojima Metal Gear Solid or Castlevania game. However, Kojima’s been busy since he left Konami. Death Stranding, the spiritual successor to Silent Hills, set the video game world alight when it was announced back in 2016. We don’t know much about the game at this point, but we all know what to expect from Kojima. The trailers and technical demos promise good things. So far, we have no official release date. However, it is supposed to come out sometime before 2019 if all goes well.

15 WiLD

playstation.com

Wild Sheep Stuido’s WiLD is an ambitious, open world, survival game. It has an intense focus on man’s relationship with nature. Since part of that involves working with wolves and riding bears, you can sign me up! WiLD was initially announced at the 2015 Paris Games Week trade show. Since then, we’ve heard very little about the development of the game. Some speculated it was canceled. It resurfaced in 2017 looking better than ever. The main character is a shaman who wields a staff and possess the ability to jump into any animal. From there, you can control them and their fellows to achieve various objectives. There is still no release date for WiLD, but hopefully the wait won’t be too long. I for one, look forward to harnessing the raw power of nature.

14 Everybody’s Golf

pushsquare.com

Well, it wouldn’t be an exclusives list without a golfing game. The classic Everybody’s Golf series is making a comeback. The last game came out way back in 2011 for the PlayStation Vita before it got a port to the PlayStation 3 in 2013. However, Sony is dead set on reviving this long-running franchise with Everybody’s Golf for the PlayStation 4. Although golfing simulators were never the most popular games, they do have dedicated fans who eagerly await the reborn franchise. Everybody's Golf has a brand new, extensive character customization. It even allows players to connect to each other online and see what how they are doing on the 9 hole open course in addition to a few other, side activities. Everybody’s Golf will be available in North America on August 29, 2017. It will release in Europe and Japan on August 29th and 30th respectively.

13 The Last Of Us: Part 2

Who thinks fungi are scary? Apparently someone at Naughty Dog. They took the mildly unsettling concept of the insect mind controlling cordyceps fungus and made it piss your pants terrifying with The Last of Us. However, there was more to The Last of Us than Clickers and spores. The gripping story and compelling characters earned the game a spot on any PlayStation owners shelf. Now, Naughty Dog is at it again with The Last of Us: Part 2. It is a direct sequel to The Last of Us and will continue Joel and Ellie’s story. The game is still in early development, so not much is known beyond the cinematic trailer and a handful of details. Even so, fans are extraordinarily exciting and can’t wait to get their hands on the game.

12 Days Gone

via polygon.com

Bend Studio’s Days Gone has it all; zombies, zombie wolves, zombie bears, and lots of dirty people in a post-apocalyptic society. It is the usual open-world survival horror game that people know and love. Or well, some people. Some are also sick of it. Either way, the zombie hordes aren’t done with us yet. Days Gone took major beats from The Last of Us and Sons of Anarchy. You play as Deacon St. John, a biker turned bounty hunter. We don’t know much about the story, but it’s safe to say that trying not to get eaten is high up on the list of priorities. Crafting and gathering supplies mechanics are built into the game as well. However, Deacon’s sweet bike should add a breath of fresh air. There’s still no set date for the game’s release, but it will launch in the first half of 2018.

11 Yakuza Kiwami

dualshockers.com

If you live in Japan, you’re lucky. Yakuza Kiwami, an HD remake of the original Yakuza game for the PlayStation 4, already released in Japan back in January of 2016. Although it’s been well over a year, world wide Yakuza fans only have to wait a few more days. Kiwami, for those who don’t speak Japanese, means “extreme.” This remake is, unsurprisingly, just that. There is a ton of new content and features to help augment the updated graphics. The 2017 E3 showcased Yakuza Kiwami and advertised the Silver Box Edition for the die-hard fans. Yakuza 6 released last year and revolved around the relationship between Kazuma and his adopted daughter as you searched for the secrets behind her infant son. Yakuza Kiwami offers the fans a chance to relive the beginning of their story. The game will release August 29, 2017.

10 Knack II

via: PlayStation Blog

The platforming genre is really making a comeback. The recent remakes like Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy and Yooka-Laylee as well as the multitude of kickstarter titles brought the platformer back into the forefront of gaming. Knack II is a sequel to the 2013 action-platformer, Knack. Although the reception for Knack was lackluster, the upcoming title seems to have a lot more life in it. Of course, having the award-winning God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk on the team tends to do that. What’s more, Knack II will feature a full co-op multiplayer mode. The combat and difficulty curves also got a shiny new polish. All in all, Knack II is set to be a better game than its predecessor. Knack II launches on September 5, 2017.

9 Skyrim VR

Via: nexusmods.com (opusGlass)

I doubt there is any game that has gotten as much love as The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim. It released nearly six years ago and is still getting new editions. These aren’t remakes either. Skyrim initially launched in November, 2011 for the Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3. Since then it received a Special Edition and Legendary Edition. Both were ports to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Yet another port is on its way for the Switch. Now, Bethesda is working on a special VR edition for Skyrim. Granted, Skyrim is a really good game. Although, this is starting to get ridiculous. Even so, PlayStation VR Headset owners are going to praise their life choices once Skyrim VR hits the shelves. They can expect in this November, although the exact date still needs to be confirmed.

8 The Impatient

n3rdabl3.com

If you liked Until Dawn and own a PlayStation VR Headset, you’re in luck. The Impatient is an upcoming PlayStation VR exclusive that shoves you into the heart of the Blackwood Sanitarium as one of its patients. If that doesn’t send up an immediate red flag, go read any horror story ever. The Impatient is a prequel to Until Dawn and shows off the Sanitarium in its heyday. However, the developers assured PlayStation owners that you don’t need to play Until Dawn first. The title is designed to be standalone and has a completely different cast of characters and untold horrors. Like its predecessor, The Impatient features a complex narrative with choices that will lead you down a variety of branching paths. The Impatient is set to release sometime this year.

7 Moss

playstation.com

One of the more unusual PlayStation VR that is on its way is Moss. Unlike many of the other VR titles, Moss is an action, adventure, puzzle game. It has a storybook like quality to it. The main character is a small mouse named Quill. You play as her guardian and guide her through her adventure. What’s more, Quill communicates in American Sign Language. There is a small clip of her where she signs, “Nice to meet you. My name is Quill.” It isn’t necessary to know ASL to get through the game, but Quill is supposed to give hints to puzzles and her thoughts through ASL. So, knowing a little will certainly enhance your gameplay experience. The rest of us are SOL. Moss is set to release sometime in 2017.

youtube.com

The creators of Until Dawn are back with the collaborative, gritty, crime-thriller Hidden Agenda. Its gameplay follows a similar style to That’s You. The game uses PlayLink to establish a connection between the PlayStation 4 and your smartphone. However, unlike That’s You, lives are on the line. You can either play as a single player or work in a team of up to 5 in order to stop a serial killer’s rampage. Not only that, you’re pitted against the other players. You’ll be given hidden tasks and secret information. However, it’s up to everyone to get through the story. Your collaborative actions will determine if everyone lives or dies. Hidden Agenda is set to release October 25, 2017, just in time for Halloween.

3 Detroit: Become Human

Fans of the old noir films will be delighted to get their hands on the upcoming neo-noir thriller game, Detroit: Become Human by Quantic Dream. Although they haven’t made many games, the last title to come out of Quantic Dream was Beyond: Two Souls. The plot for Detroit: Become Human focuses on three main characters, all of whom are androids. It focuses heavily on civil rights, revolutions, and player choice. Kind of like Bioshock but with less water, even fewer zombies, and more robots. However, the stories of the three leads are in your hands and the choices you make will determine if they succeed or perish. The game’s tagline is “See the world of man through the eyes of a machine.” Detroit: Become Human is set for release October 25, 2017.

2 Marvel’s Spider-Man

via Marvel Entertainment on YouTube

Although Marvel’s Spider-Man is only the most recent in a long line of Spider-Man games, yet fans are absolutely ravenous. It’s not hard to see why. The rise in super-hero popularity means that Marvel has every incentive to do this one right. Not only have we seen the cinematic trailers, but E3 2017 gave us 9 minutes of amazing gameplay. The game follows Peter Parker’s adventures as he swings through New York. It features an open-world with stealth, QTE, and environmental combat. Granted, the presence of QTE is somewhat worrisome. Especially if they choose to take the route that The Order 1886 did with their boss fights. We still don’t have a specific release date, but the game is set to launch in the first half of 2018. Hopefully, Spider-Man won’t let us down.

1 Shadow Of The Colossus

via teamico.wikia.com

Team Ico’s Shadow of the Colossus is a one in a million game. It was praised by players and critics alike when it initially launched for the PlayStation 3. Both it and Ico received remakes for the PlayStation 3. Team Ico went on to release the wonderful and heart-wrenching game The Last Guardian in 2016 for the PlayStation 4. However, Sony announced at E3 2017 that Shadow of the Colossus was headed to the PlayStation 4. Needless to say, the announcement went over well. Shadow of the Colossus is considered one of the best games of all time and a masterpiece. Bluepoint and Sony Japan Studio are handling the remake. Sadly there is no exact release date but it is set to launch sometime in 2018.
