13 Grand Theft Auto Online

Grand Theft Auto Online Play Dirty

Launched in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 and its Online component set the world on fire. The single-player portion of the game lets you take on the roles of three criminals, robbing banks, murdering civilians, street racing and much, much more. It's the online component that allows the most freedom though.

With its remaster, as well as its next-generation update, the Online component has seen many improvements, additions, and expansions. You start by creating your very own character, adjusting their gender, height, age, hair and more. It might not be the most robust creation suite ever, but it’s the entry point into a world of possibilities.

12 The Outer Worlds

Like many role-playing games, The Outer Worlds starts by letting you create your own character. The creation offers a plethora of hairstyles and colors, in-depth facial construction, and randomized options for the less fussy player, too.

Anyone who has played a role-playing game or a Fallout-like game before will immediately recognize the creation suite on offer. It isn’t the most technical, the most beautiful, or advanced, but once you’re done with it, you can explore the science fiction worlds of The Outer Worlds and feel as though you’re a part of that galaxy of characters and stories. On top of that, you can choose perks and skills, backstories and more, to truly make your character unique to you.

11 Diablo 4

Diablo 4 boasts incredible visuals and customization, allowing for some of the best-looking custom characters ever seen in gaming. Like many role-playing games, you can tweak minute details about your character to make them appear however you want. But on top of that, you can select their class and skills too.

The classes include The Barbarian, The Sorcerer, The Druid, The Rogue, and The Necromancer. Each one offering its own style of play, its own abilities, and perks. Not only can you choose how your character looks, but how you play the game. Taking it further, you can also customize your mounts.

10 Saints Row

The Saints Row reboot feels quite a bit different from its predecessors in various ways. Yet, it continues the series tradition of providing an incredibly deep character creation suite. In fact, it is so impressive that the developers allowed you to try it out before the game was even released in what they called the Boss Factory.

It makes sense that they wanted to show it off early because it's incredible. You get full control over every aspect of your character, meaning you can create pretty much anything. And the game allows you to make alterations wherever you are in the open world.

9 WWE 2K22 and WWE 2K23

Wrestling nor sports games generally come to mind when thinking of character-creation games. However, the main WWE games have long offered better customization options than pretty much every other game on the market. That doesn't change in WWE 2K22 and its followup, WWE 2K23.

There are templates you can use for your face and body, and then you can adjust the most minute details. For instance, do you want to make an eye a little larger? You can do that. On top of that, there are many options when it comes to makeup and clothing, too. So much so that people are capable of coming up with all sorts of wild creations.

8 Outriders

Outriders is a third-person action RPG, so you spend plenty of time looking at your character, especially if you're going for a completionist run. Therefore, you want to make sure the protagonist is visually appealing, which the game allows with its character creator.

There aren't a whole host of options to pick from, whether you choose to play as a male or female. After all, you only get to pick a face, hairstyle, facial hair, markings, and piercings, as well as the color of some of those things. However, the options available are very varied. As a result, your hero isn't likely to resemble anyone else.

7 GreedFall: Gold Edition

Originally, Greedfall came out for the Xbox One and PS4. Now, though, the new consoles have the Gold Edition of the game. So, this version technically counts as an Xbox Series X|S title. This is good for anyone with the system, as GreenFall is a wonderful RPG. And like many RPGs, it comes with a character creator.

The creation suite in this one is a series of sliders where you can alter different aspects of your face. Unfortunately, you can't mess with your body. Thankfully, though, there are likely enough facial options to create the person you want.

6 Immortals Fenyx Rising

Immortals Fenyx Rising is a very beautiful and enjoyable open-world action game that's based on Greek mythology. From a gameplay standpoint, it gets compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild a lot. But one area where it differs from the Nintendo classic is the inclusion of a character creator.

Admittedly, it doesn't offer as many customization options as some games, especially when it comes to body shape. Yet, there is still plenty on offer, and certainly enough to make some unique heroes.

5 OlliOlli World

In OlliOlli World, you take on the role of a fledgling skater navigating the many ramps and halfpipes of Radlandia with the hope of becoming the next Skate Wizard. The game mixes skateboarding with elements of a traditional 2D platformer, much like the two prior entries in the indie sports series.

Don't let its whimsical style and colorful aesthetic fool you though; OlliOlli World has one of the more robust character creators seen on the Xbox Series X|S. Customization options include several faces, hairstyles, and body types, as well as a host of clothing items to compliment your sense of style. Speaking of style, you can even choose your default poses for various actions and how your avatar grabs the skateboard while performing tricks, with more options becoming available as you unlock them over the course of your playthrough.

4 The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has never looked better on a console as it does running on the Xbox Series X. Its native 4K resolution paired with a rock-solid 60 FPS means that players can finally explore the titular province of Tamriel the way the devs at Bethesda intended.

One of the game's defining features is of course its sense of scale and the freedom to tackle both main and side quests however you choose. This starts from the character creation process, during which you can choose what type of character you'd like to adventure as. The game does away with the class system from previous entries but gives far more customization options. For example, you can now add details like battle scars and war paint to your character, which helps to add even more depth to their backstory.

3 The Ascent

A screenshot showing character customization options in The Ascent

The Ascent might not look like a game that lends itself to extensive character customizations, played from a zoomed-out isometric perspective as it is. But you'll be surprised by just how detailed some of its character models and environments actually are, with PC camera mods revealing a game that looks just as good played from a first or third-person perspective.

As though in anticipation of the greater level of scrutiny those viewpoints introduce, the game gives players a number of customization options to play around with. You can select your gender, face, skin color, and tattoos, as well as more granular options for things like hairstyles, clothes, and weapon skins. And while many of these are nowhere as extensive as some of the other games out there, it is still nice being given the option in the first place.

2 Elden Ring

It is fair to state that Elden Ring was one of the most anticipated video games heading into 2022, at least judging by the 12 million copies it managed to sell within its first three weeks on the market.

Like any good RPG of its size and scope, the game allows you to customize your character in a number of ways. You can choose your character's gender, age, and class, as well as customize their physical appearance to suit your preferences. And while most new players might be concerned with getting the perfect build from the get-go, the game encourages experimentation by making it relatively easy for you to respec your characters, later on, should you choose to.

1 Cyberpunk 2077

A screenshot showing the character creator in Cyberpunk 2077.

While Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky launch, it has improved a lot since then, as many of the bugs and glitches have been removed. So, there hasn't been a better time to jump into the game and explore the streets of Night City, with its crime-ridden districts and giant holographic displays.

The game allows you to do so with a fully customizable character that you can fine-tune to your liking, from gender to overall appearance. And the customizations don't stop there, as you can also augment your character with cyberware like Gorilla Arms during your playthrough, making it one of the most robust systems seen on the Xbox Series X|S.
