2010-2019 was a huge decade for the gaming industry, new consoles were released, strides were made in regards to VR, and most importantly, plenty of amazing games were brought into our lives.

Now that we're in a brand new decade, many people are looking back and ranking their favorite games of the 2010s.

For this list, we're doing something different. Instead of looking at individual games, we're considering individual years. To do this, we've examined every year from 2010-2019 and ranked them solely based on how good their games were.

10 2014

After their release in late 2013, this was the first full year for the Xbox One and PS4, yet it was the weakest one of the decade. This is because many of the 2014's biggest titles were re-releases/remakes of previously successful games. The prior year's biggest games GTA V and The Last Of Us, were released onto the new systems, whereas The Master Chief Collection brought the first four numbered Halo games onto the Xbox One.

There were also some good new releases such as Dragon Age Inquisition, Shadow of Mordor, and Bayonetta 2, but overall the year lacked the originality to land it higher on the list. It also had the hugely disappointing Assassin's Creed Unity that let the whole year down.

9 2016

2016 had a good mix of strong sequels like Uncharted 4 and Dark Souls 3, and exciting original games such as Stardew Valley and Overwatch. Also, who can forget the insane fun everyone had in DOOM when it came out in 2016?

But despite boasting some fantastic games, 2016 lacked the quantity to go with that quality, explaining its low position on this list. The higher ranked years either had a larger collection of great games or their best were even better. Still, even though it might not be one of the finest gaming years of the decade, it can't be called a bad year.

8 2015

Gamer''s appreciation of 2015 comes down to how they feel about some very divisive titles. Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain, Fallout 4, and Arkham Knight were loved by some but hated by others.

The far more universally praised Witcher 3 also came out in 2015 and has since set the standard of what an open-world game should be. 2015 also saw the release of Bloodborne, which gave fans a renewed interest in the Souls-style games after the mediocre Dark Souls II. Plus, 2015 was the year when Undertale blew everyone away with its creative combat and compelling characters. Ori and the Blind Forest, Super Mario Maker, and Rise of the Tomb Raider were a few other impressive titles that were released in 2015. If the year's divisive titles hadn't had their clear flaws, then 2015 would be near the top of this list.

7 2012

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series displayed a level of storytelling that was rare to see in games at the time, and it was one of the highlights of 2012. Some of the years other best titles included Borderlands 2, Dishonored, and XCOM: The Enemy Unknown.

2012 was an overall solid year in gaming with plenty of good to great titles being released throughout the twelve months. The only thing holding the year back was the absence of many true classics. A few more genre-defining titles and fewer sequels that didn't live up to their franchises (Assassin's Creed III and Hitman: Absolution were released in 2012) would've shot 2012 up this list.

6 2019

The decade when out on a high in regards to gaming, with some brilliant original games being released in 2019. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice put its own spin on the well-defined Souls formula, Control was equal parts weird and wonderful, and Death Stranding was certainly unique.

Despite the year's originality, one of 2019's biggest and most popular releases was a remake. However, unlike the remakes/re-releases in 2014, 2019's Resident Evil 2 was completely rebuilt from the ground up, and it made for one of the greatest remakes in gaming history. In addition, Gears 5 and Devil May Cry 5 were strong installments in their respective franchises while Jedi Fallen Order showed that there is still a market for single-player Star Wars games. All in all, it was a great year for games.

5 2011

Skyrim's constant re-releases mean the game's magic has somewhat faded, and now more people think of it as a meme than the incredible game it was upon its release in 2011. The year also provided us with two of the greatest video game sequels ever in the form of Arkham City and Portal 2. Arkham City took what worked about Asylum and expanded on it to make the whole experience bigger. Likewise, Portal 2 also expanded on its predecessor, as it added more puzzle elements, new characters, and even an outstanding fully-fledged co-op campaign.

2011 also had Uncharted 3, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and the long-awaited official release of Minecraft (it had been in beta for multiple years prior to 2011). A fantastic year for games that would be higher on this list if the competition wasn't so stiff.

4 2018

Other than Fallout 76, gaming in 2018 was impressive. Red Dead Redemption 2 was a masterpiece in terms of character development, writing, and level of detail (and horse customization). God of War flipped the franchise on its head to deliver an exquisite narrative experience.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was a virtually perfect Smash Bros. game. Dragon Ball FighterZ showed that Dragon Ball games could be great. Similarly Marvel's Spider-Man proved that comic book games could be as good as comic book movies. For many, 2018 may be considered the best gaming year of the last decade, and it would be hard to argue as there's very little to separate the top four on this list.

3 2010

In January 2010, Mass Effect 2 hit the shelves, wowing everyone with its immensely detailed world and noteworthy cast of characters. Then, a few months later, in May, Red Dead Redemption received similar praise for its own world and characters. May 2010 also saw the release of Super Mario Galaxy 2, which featured the frantic fun and unbelievable level design Mario games are known for.

Those three titles alone would've been enough to make 2010 a good year, yet they were joined by the likes of LIMBO, Super Meat Boy, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Starcraft 2: Wings Of Liberty, Fallout: New Vegas, and that's just to name a few.

2 2017

The Nintendo Switch came out in 2017, and within its first year, two of the decade's greatest games were released onto the console. Firstly, Breath of the Wild gave fans a terrific open world, which was filled with exciting things to discover and do.

Later on in the year, Super Mario Odyssey challenged Breath of the Wild for the title of best Switch game by delivering some of the most creative levels the Mario series has ever seen — which is saying something.

Not to be out-done by Nintendo, Sony released a few amazing exclusives of their own, including Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn. Although in hindsight, the biggest moment for gaming as a whole in 2017 came when Fortnite was released. The battle royale title has since taken the gaming and pop culture world by storm.

1 2013

When GTA V came out in 2013, Rockstar proved that they are still the masters of single-player adventures by mixing a fun sandbox world with a very well-written story. Added to that was GTA Online, which was and still is a juggernaut.

Despite the high level of writing GTA V had, it still couldn't compete in that department to 2013's other classic, The Last of Us. Joel and Ellie's adventure was one of the most exciting and emotional stories in video game history, and showed that games could rival cinema in regards to storytelling.

However, two games alone couldn't make 2013 the best year of the last decade. They were helped by the stunning Tomb Raider reboot; Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, which was the greatest pirate game ever (at that point); and Nintendo's wonderful Super Mario 3D World. That's not to mention BioShock Infinite, Saints Row IV, Dota 2, Gone Home, and Metro Last Light, which also all came into our lives in 2013. It was truly a landmark year for gaming.
