Ubisoft's Beyond Good and Evil 2 could well be turning into one of those long-running jokes. You know, the one about the game that's been so long in development that it becomes a byword for something that may never see the light of day. There have been previous claimants to this dubious accolade, with Duke Nukem Forever once being the butt of jokes ("yeah we'll see Half-Life 3 when Duke Nukem Forever comes out") but that game did actually see the light of day eventually.

However, the sequel to the PS2's Beyond Good and Evil is being worked on and apparently it's still in "early development". That's according to sources cited by Insider Gaming, who have indicated that external and internal playtesting has continued on the game over the summer.

Insider Gaming have seen images and video that were provided under anonymity which suggests that the game has probably been rebooted since the pre-alpha demo walkthrough shown in 2018 as nothing seen shows the same level of detail, the site reported.

They go on to say that the images and footage show "bare planets with blocked structures for buildings" and that details were of very low quality as if the game was being played on an ultra-low setting. But the spaceships do look like the ones that were flying around in the 2018 trailer. In their estimation the game seems to be at least another couple of years away from release.

Beyond Good and Evil 2's first trailer released all the way back in May 30, 2008. There was a long gap then a decade later a pre-alpha demo walkthrough was shown off at E3 2018 showing off features that didn't share much resemblance to when it was first announced. The game this year earned the unfortunate distinction of taking the record for the longest time between its announcement and release.

Ubisoft provided a brief comment to Insider Gaming regarding its report saying that development continues and that the team is "hard at work to deliver on its ambitious promise".
