We've had Minecraft Steve for entire WEEKS now, so clearly it's time for the Smash rumor mill to get back to grinding. And grind it has, this time with the news that Fortnite could be the next game to hit Smash Bros.

This latest rumor comes from a Zoom call held by Game Awards host and producer Geoff Keighley. Keighley has been doing a few of these calls, reports Dexerto, where he invites select fans to chat with him and a gaming industry guest. The guest this time was Epic Games Creative Director Donald Mustard.

This is where things get into rumor territory, as there was no industry presence at the call besides Keighley and Mustard. They haven't revealed anything that was discussed, which leaves us to go on fan word. What we do have is a series of tweets from FireMonkey, a well-known Fortnite news source. FireMonkey claims to have spoken to someone who was part of the Zoom call and who he considers credible.

According to this leak, a big Fortnite announcement will happen during the Game Awards on December 10. Mustard also allegedly said that a new event is coming to Fortnite that will "change the future" of the game. Finally, when asked about Smash, Mustard gave the standard "no comment" response.

The Zoom call info ends with that, leaving speculation to pick up from there. One might recall that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's DLC got started at the 2018 Game Awards with the announcement of Persona 5's Joker. If Nintendo and Epic Games want to make a splash with a Fortnite Smash announcement, gaming's biggest award show would be the place to do it. Dexerto also points out that the last person to say "no comment" was No More Heroes creator Suda51. And now Travis Touchdown is in Smash, albeit as a Mii Costume.

So would Smash have a Fortnite fighter? Or simply a Mii costume? Both are possible, but a skin seems more likely. It would be odd to release another character with building powers right after Minecraft Steve. But would Epic Games be satisfied with just a skin? Fortnite is a worldwide phenomenon that changed gaming (whether we like those changes or not) so it seems anticlimactic to give it a simple Peely the Banana skin and call it a day. Also, a skin would hardly "change the future of Fortnite" as Mustard supposedly said.

The other possibility is that Smash isn't involved at all, at least not with this Game Awards announcement. Fortnite is a constantly-evolving social hub at this point. It has in-game movie nights, concerts, and even a fully functional fan-made RPG. The future of Fortnite would definitely be changed if Epic announced a movie, animated series, or other project outside of the Fortnite game.

All we can do is wait for December 10 and watch the Game Awards to see what happens. And maybe keep an eye on your Geno-loving friends, just in case.
