Welcome to 2022 where thankfully, the video game news wheel keeps on turning. Almost definitely a lot faster than it was this time last year with far more big titles arriving within the first few months than in 2021. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though. We're here to look back on the week that was, not the few months that are about to be. The first seven days of 2022 have been some busy ones. We learned that the year ahead is probably going to be filled with a lot of The Last Of Us stuff, Sonic Frontiers really should have been here by now, and sadly, we won't all be seeing each other in person at E3 again. All of that and more from the biggest stories of the past week below.

E3 Won't Be In Person In 2022

Just when it started to feel like the world was opening back up, the Omicron variant has run rampant and the world feels unsafe all over again. Organizers of large-scale events in the near future are having to reassess their plans, and that includes E3 2022. The ESA has revealed for the third year in a row, E3 will be an all-digital event. There was a hope that after two years of no physical E3, 2022's event would be a hybrid of what we've had for the past two years and a traditional E3. Unfortunately, that will not be the case.

Jedi Fallen Order News Coming Soon

Jedi Fallen Order 2

Speaking of E3, big video game announcements tend to dry up somewhat right before the annual event as studios save their trailers and announcements for one of the biggest weekends of the year. However, according to industry insider Jeff Grubb, that will not be the case for the still unannounced Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order 2. Grubb claims news on the sequel will be revealed by EA and Respawn way before E3. Exciting stuff and get to playing the new-gen upgrade in the meantime if you haven't already.

Lots Of The Last Of Us To Get Excited About

Star Wars fans weren't the only ones getting riled up by leaks and insiders this week. According to another insider Tom Henderson, The Last Of Us will potentially be getting a lot of love in 2022. Not just the HBO adaptation, but also the PS5 remake of the original game. There's also the standalone multiplayer still to be announced, and apparently, a director's cut of Part 2 to boot. Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann did say the studio has a lot of exciting stuff to reveal, it stands to reason that The Last Of Us will get at least a couple of mentions when that rundown is eventually revealed.

The PS VR2 And Horizon Call Of The Mountain

The PS5 has been out in the wild for more than a year now, which might be hard to believe for anyone who still can't find one. That means a chunk of those working behind the scenes can now switch their focus to PlayStation's next big project. The PSVR2 was officially revealed this week. Jim Ryan gave the world a first look at the system's headset and a closer look at its controllers. He even announced the first game for the PSVR2, Horizon Call Of The Mountain. A look into Aloy's world unlike any fans of Horizon will have ever seen before, and hopefully it won't be too long until we get the chance to try it out for ourselves.

GoldenEye Might Finally Be Getting Remastered

With each passing remaster it feels more and more like there can't be many more big games from the past to drag into the modern era. One huge title that continues to avoid the remake ray is GoldenEye 007. This week, the strongest evidence to date that a remaster is in the works has been unearthed. A fresh list of achievements discovered via the Xbox Live servers. Most are pretty basic, for things like completing certain levels, but the list is different from the canceled XBLA remake of the game. 2022 is the 25th anniversary of GoldenEye's launch, so if it is making a comeback, it makes sense it would be this year.

Sonic Frontiers Is A Year Late

Announcing a game is coming far too early has become a dangerous trend in gaming. See Cyberpunk 2077 and Marvel's Avengers for examples of how that can go very wrong. So hearing a major studio wasn't afraid to not only delay a game but keep all of its details under wraps for an extended amount of time is refreshing to hear. The team behind Sonic Frontiers revealed that was the case for the upcoming Sonic game. Apparently, Frontiers was supposed to be here by the end of 2021. That makes sense since last year was Sonic's 30th birthday. Rather than push the team to meet the deadline and launch Frontiers last year, it pushed it back to make sure the next Sonic game is as good as it possibly can be. Take note, everyone else.
