We might finally be arriving at a place where NFTs actually have a use. Not for video game cosmetics or financial speculation, but for maintaining an air of mystery to one of Hollywood's most secretive and enigmatic celebrities.
Streaming and photo-sharing site The Chive has just announced "The Official Bill Murray NFT 1000," a collection of 1000 NFTs that will feature a unique graphic of Bill Murray as drawn by David Grizzle. Alongside the graphic, each NFT will contain a brief and unique anecdote from Bill Murray himself.
Bill Murray is a legend in Hollywood, not just for his movies (of which we could spend a long time listing, but we'll just throw out Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, and Caddyshack to name a few), but also for his tall tales and often bizarre interactions with the general populace. For example (courtesy of NME), Bill once threw the phones of three fans off a roof after they took selfies without his permission. He's also been known to crash bachelor parties, weddings, and other significant events.
But it's Murray's stories that get the most attention. In 2018, a documentary was released collating as many of Murray's stories as possible. Called "The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned From a Mythical Man," the documentary was made without the participation of the titular character. Murray has thus far refused to confirm or deny any of the anecdotes related to the documentary but promises to tell his side of at least some of these stories in the Official Bill Murray NFT 1000 project.
So, what can potential NFT owners expect? The Chive gave one example about Bill Murray's phone. It's an ancient Blackberry Classic he calls "Bill Urry." That's because the 'M' key doesn't work. "If you’ve received a text from Bill in the last five years, the M’s are omitted," explains The Chive. "Considering Bill prefers texting to talking, that’s a lot of missing M’s.”
The Official Bill Murray NFT 1000 will be sold on Coinbase's upcoming NFT marketplace sometime starting next month. You can sign up for notifications here. The first NFT auctioned off will go to charity. Prices haven't been set, but of all the wildly expensive NFTs we've seen, this one might be the first to actually have some value.
