Pick The Right Class

Picking a class and creating a character is the first important task you'll need to complete in Biomutant. Each class comes with a distinct set of perks, with some catering to melee playstyles and others better for ranged combat or using Psi abilities. You'll want to carefully consider each class before making your final decision, but here's a quick overview as to what you can expect with each:

  • Dead-Eye: Specializes in Ranged Weapons combat, with the ability to instantly reload magazines.
  • Commando: Ranged Weapons class that takes advantage of the "Fury" skill to increase damage.
  • Psi-Freak: Excellent choice if you're interested in using Psi-Powers such as Telekinesis.
  • Saboteur: Melee Weapons class with high agility.
  • Sentinel: Balanced class that works well with any weapon.

One important thing to note – classes should be considered a starting point for your built. All five are still able to use the same weapons and abilities, although some classes are better suited to a playstyle than others.

Stop What You're Doing And Learn The Combat

Biomutant Gun Combat

Once you know what you're doing, combat in Biomutant isn't too complex. As a beginner, however, you're going to be overwhelmed unless you sit down and take a few minutes to understand its various mechanics and combos.

Mutations come in two forms – Biogenetics and Psi-Power – although both are essentially the equivalent of a magic system. Wung-Fu, meanwhile, is what improves your ability with melee and ranged weapons. You'll also get a set of class-specific perks to manage, along with various Super Wung-Fu skills.

Grab a cup of coffee, plop down on the couch, and take five minutes to discover all the available upgrades and which ones are most appealing to your playstyle.

Learn About Crafting

Crafting plays a big role in Biomutant. Some of the best weapons in the early game can be crafted, making it imperative you understand how it all works. The game gives you a brief overview of how it all works, but you'll want to get your hands dirty to truly figure out the system. In short – collect melee and ranged components, save up resources such as Polym, and slap them all together on the Crafting screen to build impressive new gear.

Upgrade Your Gear

Speaking of gear, crafting new weapons isn't the only way to grow more powerful in Biomutant. You can also upgrade your current gear by finding Workbenches scattered throughout the land. These are typically found in massive floating balloons – making them easy to spot from a distance. Upgrading your weapons and armor at these stations will further boost its current stats, and it’s a great way to keep using your favorite items throughout the majority of the game.

Find A Mount

Gnoat Biomutant

The Puki Azure Gnoat will probably be the first mount you stumble upon. Grab the nearby Pip – which is essentially bait – and run up to the Gnoat to tame it. You'll now have access to a loyal steed to help you quickly travel across the land.

Plenty of better mounts can be found during your journey, while some are sold exclusively by vendors. The Gnoat is a great starting point, but you'll probably want something faster after your first few hours of playtime. Be on the lookout for Pips and vendors – as you never know when a rare mount is just around the corner.

Tackle A Few Side Quests

Biomutant Environment

Some of the most interesting gear in Biomutant is locked away behind side quests. Trotting off the beaten path and finishing up some side quests not only grant you some exclusive items, but it's also a great way to level up. The difficulty can ramp up rather fast, so picking up good gear and additional XP from side quests is an easy way to stay ahead of the curve.

Collect Everything

Healthpack Biomutant

Seriously. Open every cabinet, dig up every pile of garbage, and check behind every door. More often than not, you'll be rewarded with crafting components or gear that far surpasses your current loadout. You'll also want to be on the lookout for tiny, green bags – as they hold valuable consumables that restore your health.

If you're just getting started in Biomutant, those health packs are going to be your lifeline. Don't be afraid to use them as often as needed, but keep in mind you'll have a limited supply unless you're actively looking to replace them.

Don't Be Afraid To Run Away

Coming to grips with Biomutant's combat system is going to take some time. Instead of powering through difficult enemies – and wasting your precious health packs – don't be afraid to turn heel and run away. The main quest will often run you through areas that are populated with enemies just above your skill level, although there's no need to engage in combat. Simply run past them with your pride intact and come back to fight another day.

Try Out All The Weapon Types

Biomutant Klonkfist

Guns, Rifles, Automatic Rifles, Dual Wield Guns, One-Handed Swords, Unarmed Combat – the variety of weapon types in Biomutant is truly staggering. Although they often share many of the same combos, they each have their own set of quirks. Make sure you're testing out all the weapons you come across, even if they seem underpowered. You can always upgrade them at workbenches or tack on a few parts in the Crafting menu if you enjoy the new playstyle they offer.

Be On The Lookout For Fast Travel Spots

Biomutant Open World

The world of Biomutant is absolutely massive. Even with a mount, you're looking at long stretches of time galloping between your objectives. It's in your best interest to keep an eye out for fast travel posts scattered throughout the post-apocalyptic world. You'll typically run into these just by following the main quest, but every so often you'll need to venture slightly off course to find a convenient signpost – if you see one, do everything you can to go and activate it.

Some locations beyond signposts also work for fast travel
