Despite mixed reception among critics, Biomutant is showing pretty decent results among PC players. In fact, Biomutant’s launch on Steam ended up being the most successful ever for the publisher THQ Nordic.

Biomutant is a new open-world action-adventure RPG from the Swedish development studio Experiment 101. The project was announced in 2017, yet the team remained silent for years after its reveal. The long-awaited and unusual title was one of this year's most highly-anticipated releases, and fans are clearly excited to go hands-on despite the lukewarm reviews.

Just hours after launch, Biomutant’s player count on Steam exceeded 55,000 players. This instantly shattered the all-time record for any of THQ Nordic previous releases on PC. The previous record of almost 23,000 players was set by Piranha Bytes’s Elex back in October 2017.

The first player reviews are also appearing on Steam for Biomutant, and they are, sadly, not so promising. At the time of writing, the game has over 3,000 reviews, with only 58% of them being positive. Many players are disappointed with the game’s performance and graphics, overcomplicated combat system with excessive mechanics, and an empty world with dull side quests. In addition, several Biomutant buyers have admitted to refunding the game after the first hour or so.

It is hard to say if Biomutant will eventually win over the community, as its lackluster reviews and great sales numbers seem to be at odds with each other. According to the developers, the game has enough content to keep fans busy for more than 65 hours of gameplay. Of course, you don’t have to complete all those side activities, and you can finish Biomutant in just 10-15 hours.

Apart from PC, Biomutant is also available on console. The title works on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 via backward compatibility, and THQ Nordic confirmed the native versions of the game are in development and will be coming “very soon.” For now, Biomutant runs at a native 4K on Xbox Series X, and upscaled 4K from a native 1080p on the PS5 due to “technical reasons.”
