Despite being almost 15 years old at this point, Bioshock continues to capture the hearts and minds of players who pick it up for the first time. There are many things to love about it, one being the game's still incredibly unique setting, having players explore an underwater "utopia" set in the 1960s. It's a setting ripe for adaptation, and that's exactly what one high school choir has done to turn the Bioshock we all know and love into a full-on musical.
First shared by Eurogamer, the Powerhouse choir from John Burroughs High School in California recently dominated the Hart Encore 2022 show choir competition with a musical rendition of Bioshock, complete with iconic characters like Andrew Ryan, Brigid Tenenbaum, and Sander Cohen. Rather than a complete retelling of the original game, Powerhouse has opted to tell the story of the founding of Rapture, presumably because none of the actors could fire bees out of their hands.
It's an excellent bit of theatre, and the judges of Hart Encore 2022 clearly agree as the performance completely cleaned up, earning Powerhouse awards for the best Musicianship, Showmanship, and Soloist. It's actually available to watch in its entirety on YouTube if you fancy watching a musical, although it's a bit of a struggle to hear anything over Powerhouse's screaming fans.
The folks at Powerhouse weren't the only ones to have a Bioshock adaptation in mind either, as streaming goliath Netflix announced earlier this year that a Bioshock movie is currently in the works. Unlike Powerhouse's production, this movie will reportedly tell the story of the original game, although we haven't heard any details since its announcement back in February. Netflix told fans to "stay tuned," so we might hear some more info about the movie later this year. Fingers crossed for a bread boy cameo.
