Casey Hudson, one-time director of Mass Effect, had some enticing and worrying things to say about the future of BioWare. In the first of what will be a series of blog posts, Hudson decided to be transparent about the shortcomings of Mass Effect: Andromeda, the focus of BioWare as a developer, and what all that means for the upcoming Anthem. The short version seems to be this: get ready for DLC.

Hudson served as the director of the critically-acclaimed and fan-favorite Mass Effect trilogy, a series that became a benchmark for character development and player choice in games. He left BioWare for some time but came back just in time to help fan the flames left behind by spin-off game Mass Effect: Andromeda. It's these issues Hudson highlighted in his blog.

Andromeda angered fans for many reasons, one of which was that it created many questions about the beloved Quarian race that were never answered. Hudson intimates that these mysteries were meant to be resolved in a story DLC. Unfortunately, Andromeda underperformed to the point that it became a meme for its quality issues. That caused BioWare to cancel any plans for DLC, a move that Hudson writes "was as frustrating for us as it was for players, and it was something we knew we had to solve in future games."

Future games like BioWare's upcoming Anthem, for instance. Hudson goes on to say that BioWare is refocusing its efforts to deliver on character and story, the things that made the company so acclaimed in the first place. Those efforts will be seen in Anthem in the form of "a whole new world of story and character that you can experience with friends in an ongoing series of adventures."

The internet had some less-than-enthusiastic responses to the blog. On a Reddit thread, many fans took Hudson's words to mean that Anthem will be loaded with story DLC since Andromeda got none. "Hm. Kind of weird to bring up the obviously planned but never delivered Quarian Ark DLC for Andromeda..." said MrMarbles77. "If he says they're trying to not let that happen again, I guess that means tons of story DLC for Anthem?" Others dislike the idea that Anthem's story will be delivered in multiplayer format. The top rated comment, by aksoileau, states that they "don’t want to play a story with friends. BioWare games used to be about a personal experience that I could immerse myself into like a book."

The important thing to note is that Hudson hasn't confirmed anything in the way of DLC for Anthem. But fans are already taking a stance based on initial impressions, despite or because of Hudson's attempt at transparency. Whatever the end result, the future certainly looks uncertain for BioWare.
