Bite the Bullet is the world’s first Run, Gun & Eat game, which is not a genre we thought existed until just now.

From Mega Cat Studios, the same indie dev that brought you a brawler where you play as a pair of baristas fending off an alien invasion, comes Bite the Bullet, a run & gunner where you play as a pair of mercenaries that use their competitive eating prowess to kill terrifying mutant enemies.

There's a lot to unpack in Bite the Bullet, so we'll get the easy stuff out of the way first. Mega Cat calls this game a "roguelite RPG shooter," which is technically true. There's a whole bunch of RPG elements, like a skill tree, special abilities, and upgradeable weapons. And you can definitely die and come back to try again in order to satisfy the roguelite requirement. And you definitely shoot things with guns, so there's that.

But here's where things get weird. In order to power up your character's weapons and abilities, you eat the things you shoot. Yes, you'll literally eat the corpse of a freshly killed zombie in order to unlock new weapons and abilities. You will also probably puke.

There are four character classes that will determine your skill tree: Carnivore, Herbivore, Omnivore, and Robovore. Yes, Robovore means you eat robots. We're going to skip explaining the biology of such a diet.

As you play, certain enemies will become “stunned” after they’re defeated. That’s your cue to run up and mindlessly consume their bodies. Do it enough and you’ll unlock new powers and guns, but be careful. Eat too much and run too little and you’ll gain weight. Conversely, eat too little and run too much and your attacks will lose power.

Bite the Bullet isn’t quite Metal Slug X, but it's close.

This game also has a bunch of competitive eaters in it which you can visit to obtain their special powers. YouTube personalities like LA Beast, Bob Shoudt, and Matt Stonie can be visited in Bite the Bullet's hub world so you can learn from their vast experience in competitive eating. Such as how to eat a cactus, which I'm sure will be a very useful life skill.

Bite the Bullet is out now on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. You can even get 20% if you buy it before August 20.
