I have a lot of problems with Avengers’ loot system and end game, but generally speaking, I really enjoy the actual gameplay. Every character feels completely different yet equally fun to play as, and there are so many abilities and combos to use that combat never gets boring. I think the intrinsic meter mechanic is a great way to reward flawless fighting with powerful attacks, and the mastery system adds a bit of depth to character customization that you can actually feel in your hits. I’ve never felt properly incentivized by the rewards, but the combat is good enough to keep me coming back at every new content drop.

Black Panther might even be the best character yet. His kit reflects his iconic fighting style perfectly, and his intrinsic meter is the perfect representation of his ability to absorb kinetic energy and channel it into counter-attacks. He’s extraordinarily fun to play, that is, until you're done fighting. As soon as it's time to explore, Black Panther highlights one of Avengers’ biggest flaws. Anyone who can’t fly in Avengers feels terrible to play, and Black Panther might have the worst traversal of all.

Everything about traveling in Avengers feels bad. There isn’t one character I couldn’t nitpick about their traversal, and there’s plenty of examples of bad animations and mechanics that are shared between all of them. Even the flying characters, Iron Man and Thor, feel way too slow in the air. Hulk and Kate Bishop should be able to lead so much higher and further than they do, and the characters that swing like Black Widow and Hawkeye should have double the range on their grapples, if not more.

One of the biggest problems with traversal is that there’s not enough momentum to keep you moving forward after swinging or mantling. You can run full speed at a monkey bar and swing on it, but as soon as you let go you just drop like a stone. The animations for clinging onto edges and swing points are so awkward too. If you aren’t at the perfect distance and height when grabbing a ledge, your character just sort of freezes in reaching pose and magically shifts through space until they're at the perfect angle to attach to the ledge. It’s ugly and it doesn’t make me feel cool or powerful the way that the combat does.

Black Panther is the newest character, but he has by far the worst traversal. Like Captain America, Black Panther can only double jump in the air. Unlike Cap, however, he doesn’t even have a sprint. This makes him the slowest character in the game, and the worst to get around the map with.

I find it ironic that Captain America and Black Panther are so slow given that their foot speed is specifically highlighted in the MCU films. Captain America laps Sam several times during their morning run at the beginning of The Winter Soldier, and Black Panther chases down Captain America — in a car — on foot in Civil War. These characters should be able to run as fast as Iron Man and Thor can fly, period.

I don’t understand why moving around feels so terrible in Avengers, but I’d like to see movement speed get increased across the board. Mantling and swinging needs a rework as soon as possible, especially with Spider-Man on the way, and I’d like to see the jump range increased for Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hulk, and Kate Bishop, and Ms. Marvel. Black Panther moves like a snail compared to the rest of the heroes, who are each already too slow. We need to feel like heroes in and out of battle, but right now, the traversal system is doing the opposite.
