Blizzard is hiring developers to work on Warcraft 3, a game that’s 16 years old.

Can you smell a remaster in the air? We certainly can. And with Blizzard now actively seeking developers to work on their old-school RTS classic, it seems that a remaster might be just around the corner.

In a recent post to Blizzard’s careers page, the Irvine California-based megastudio advertised their need for a senior gameplay engineer with experience in “combat, AI, multiplayer, pathing, or related game systems.

“You’ll be working closely with our designers and the community to help create epic features and bring about a balance that will keep players engaged for years to come,” the want-ad goes on to say.

We’ve had hints for a while now that Blizzard was fixing to remaster Warcraft 3. Last April, the most recent Warcraft RTS received its first patch in over 2 years--patch 1.29--that gave the game widescreen support and multiplayer support for up to 24 players. There was also a whole litany of balance changes to both units and heroes that the hardcore Warcraft 3 community have been requesting for years.

At the time we speculated that this patch was a precursor to a larger remaster of the same sort that Starcraft received nearly a year ago. When Starcraft got the remaster treatment, it received ultra-high-def graphics, re-recorded sound effects and music, as well as full integration with Blizzard’s app and all the multiplayer features that come along with it.

It took Blizzard about 12 months to remaster Starcraft. They even invited a whole bunch of professional Starcraft players (and yes, all of them were from South Korea) to share in the development and take part in a release event in Busan South Korea that saw over half a million viewers online.

To be fair, Warcraft 3 didn’t have nearly the player base that Starcraft did at its peak, but it’s still a much beloved RTS for a generation of gamers. It also gave rise to the Defence of the Ancients mod that eventually gave birth to today’s modern MOBAs.

Now it’s less a question of if Blizzard is working on a Warcraft 3 remaster, but when such a remaster will be released. We’re guessing early 2019 at their current pace.
