With the formal announcement of Diablo 4 finally out of the way, it appears that the leaks involving Lilith as a key player were also correct. As the daughter of Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, and Queen of the Succubi, Lilith’s history within the Diablo series should not be understated. Long-time fans of the game may recognize the importance of her actions, the Blessed Mother of Sanctuary, but most may not.

Long before humanity and Sanctuary existed, the Eternal Conflict raged on between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. This never-ending battle seems almost senseless to outside observers, as few angels or demons bothered to question their parts in a war with no end, except for a few. Inarius, the former archangel of the High Heavens, and Lilith, gathered up followers from both sides and stole the Worldstone from the Pandemonium Fortress. Here is where our stories first began to form, as Sanctuary was created, and the Eternal Conflict would be escaped.

The angel and demon at some point mated, and the act produced the first nephalem, a powerful blend of both worlds that players have controlled throughout the Diablo series. Those renegade angels and demons soon noticed that these nephalem had the potential to be even more powerful than their creators, and many sought to destroy them. It was at this point that Lilith was driven to madness at the idea of losing her children.

For Lilith, the nephalem were the future of the world, and more importantly, a means to quell the needless Eternal Conflict. To protect her children, she became a terrifying and unstoppable monstrosity, murdering every one of the renegade angels and demons. Inarius meanwhile was shocked at the savagery of her response, and banished her into the Void, a boundless realm of emptiness that trapped Lilith.

Over time, Inarius attuned the Worldstone to gradually diminish the nephalem’s power. Generation after generation passed, until the weak, mortal race of humanity came into existence. Lilith, meanwhile, only returned to Sanctuary briefly. First was the Sin War, which saw a secret war waged for control of the humans between the Cathedral of Light, led by Inarius, and the Temple of the Triune, which the Prime Evils held sway over.

Undoing the work of Inarius, Lilith altered the Worldstone, and the nephalem began to regain their immense power again. She worked diligently beneath the guise of a human to achieve her goals, only to fail at each turn. In Diablo 3, little remains of Lilith, though her writings can be located within the Pandemonium Fortress.

What Will Lilith Do?

Presumably, the cinematic reveal has placed Lilith front and center as our main antagonist in Diablo 4. However, her origin story is perfect for a morally grey individual. Unlike the Prime Evils of Diablo, Mephisto, Baal, and all the others, waging an eternal war against the High Heavens was not of any interest to Lilith. The only “demonic” thing about Lilith is her appearance, which should count for nothing.

Instead, her actions resulted in the discovery of common ground between two supposedly incompatible sides, the creation of Sanctuary, humanity, and the nephalem. Lilith in this way may occupy a new spot within the moral spectrum of the Diablo series. The Prime Evils may not form a part of her alliances, nor might the Angels.

So, what would make her prime candidate to be an antagonist? That would likely go back to her original desire to stop the Eternal Conflict, and to do so, she may consider it necessary to create again another world, a new Sanctuary, and another offspring like the first nephalem, more powerful than anything else before. This would allow Lilith to potentially stop the Eternal Conflict by destroying everything, and perhaps that is the issue players must contend with. Would Sanctuary also require the sacrifice of itself and all of humanity within?

Perhaps instead we will not see much of Lilith directly. Another way to prepare for this grand destruction would be for Lilith to play puppet master to weaken the Prime Evils, and sending the nephalem controlled by the players of the game would help accomplish this goal. Eventually our goal will undoubtedly be to stop Lilith, even if that means killing her, and it may become a difficult choice, knowing that the alternative would be the end of the Eternal Conflict, and no more of this mindless war between Heaven and Hell.

Hopefully Lilith is used within a narrative that explores the ambiguity of her character and the complexity of her actions, because the story in Diablo 3 was lacking, to say the least. For now, it is anyone’s guess what might come in Diablo 4, but as always, the trailer looks fantastic.
