Surprise! There might be some new Borderlands 2 DLC coming in the lead-up to Borderlands 3.

It’s been 5 years since the last DLC pack dropped for Borderlands 2. Normally, we’d say it’s pretty safe to assume that Gearbox is done with Borderlands 2, especially with Borderlands 3 not even 5 months away. But Gearbox seems to have a special relationship with the Borderlands franchise.

First, they released a remastered version of the original Borderlands. Then they released a high-definition update pack for Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel. Now we’re getting told that Borderlands 2 will actually get a brand new DLC pack to serve as a tie-in to Borderlands 3.

According to “a trusted anonymous source with first-hand knowledge” speaking to PlayStation Lifestyle, the new Borderlands 2 DLC is called "Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary.” It’ll release during the week of E3, so Borderlands fans had better re-download the game so they can play it in a few weeks.

We know nothing else, like whether or not the DLC will be free or have a small fee attached to it, but we can make some assumptions just based on the name.

Lilith takes over for the Crimson Raiders after Roland dies during the events of Borderlands 2, and The Pre-Sequel shows us that she has a tough time adapting to her new responsibilities. We also know, based on previously released info, that the spaceship players use to travel between the stars in Borderlands 3 is called Sanctuary 3. The old Dahl mining ship that serves as the home base of the Crimson Raiders is called Sanctuary, which means Sanctuary 2 isn’t accounted for.

Most like, this DLC will tell the story of what happens to the first and second Sanctuary ships during the rise of the Children of the Vault.

It seems doubtful that Gearbox would gift us with a DLC of the same size and scale as Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon’s Keep, perhaps the best DLC pack of any game ever made. But expect something smaller in line with the last Borderlands 2 DLC, Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax.
