Fortnite is at it again with another collaboration, this time with another video game. The pop culture sensation of a battle royale has managed to crossover with several movies, a Netflix series, and even sneakers. This, however, is the first time we're seeing Fortnite team up with something in its own industry. The Fortnite X Mayhem event is already underway, and mashes the colorful world of Fortnite with the cel-shaded one of Borderlands. And some Borderlands fans are not having it.

The crossover allows you to earn a Fortnite skin based on the iconic Psycho character from Borderlands, as well as back bling of the robot Claptrap. It also opens up a rift zone that puts you in Borderlands' Pandora setting, complete with the look and some mechanics of the game. It's a pretty involved crossover that really shows love for the series, and will end just before Borderlands 3 releases. Those who take issue with it worry that it will work as intended. They fear that the Fortnite audience will become interested in Borderlands 3.

"I don't feel like trying to go into a co-op and get[ting] bombarded with some kid screaming into the mic," said one user on the Borderlands subreddit. This user is one of several, reports GameRant, who took to social media to say "no thanks" to Fortnite X Mayhem. That being said, others responded more positively or with just "meh" attitudes, pointing out that the end result will likely be a big fat nothing.

Part of the wariness has to do with a widely-held belief that Fortnite is solely a kids game. That the colorful aesthetic and weekly switching of content is aimed at the TikTok generation, catering to their constant need for more content. While Fortnite does have an undeniable appeal to younger players, there are plenty of adults who play it, too. The voice screaming into your mic could easily be deeper than the one you imagine when you hear "Fortnite."

A mass invasion of children into Borderlands 3 is not likely. Firstly, because Fortnite is not only children. Secondly, because of the very nature of these children. Fortnite knows its audience has low attention spans. That's why Epic constantly introduces new events to the game. That's why, even if these kids did pick up Borderlands 3, they'd be a temporary annoyance at best. They'll probably move on to the next meme before the Fortnite X Mayhem crossover is even over. Even adults are that way, nowadays. The very threads complaining about Fortnite X Mayhem are already far from the top of the Borderlands subreddit. We are all of us impatient children at heart.
