Video games go through a lot of different cycles and trends. Over the years we've seen the industry ruled by an influx of 2D and 3D platformers, third-person action games, MMO's, survival games and live service games. We're presently in the throes of battle royale madness.

Everyone wants every game to be a battle royale, and the genre is getting jammed into every nook and cranny that developers can find.

So, as with all things, it is inevitable that one must ask: Where is the Borderlands 3 battle royale mode? Why wouldn't Gearbox already be on this? We're still firmly entrenched in the era of the battle royale, and it's hard for any game to stay relevant without some attempt at the mode.

The concept makes so much sense that it's baffling it doesn't already exist. Borderlands is a series built upon the idea that there's a whole bunch of guns, and you're supposed to gather them and use them for a whole bunch of murders. Gathering a large group of vault hunters, turning them loose in the wastelands of Pandora to loot, and then making them shoot one another is a slam dunk of an idea.

Gearbox is a company that seemingly doesn't like to go outside its comfort zone. Hell, Randy Pitchford still wants to make another Duke Nukem even though that franchise is about as outdated as VHS tapes. Many players and reviewers describe Borderlands 3 as "Borderlands, but with more stuff in it." Messing around with the series' core mechanics doesn't seem to be something Gearbox is interested in doing.

It's Battle Royale Gold

If that's the case, then it's a shame because a battle royale could work. You have four different characters to choose from, which isn't a lot when compared to other games like Apex Legends. However, each character has three different skill trees, meaning your Amara might play a lot differently than your opponent's Amara. Players could then run around any of the game's zones. Most of them are more than big enough to accommodate the kind of crazy matches you'd expect in this genre. Add in the looting, and there you have it, battle royale gold.

There's a decent chance the reason we don't have this option is that Gearbox is still working on it. In fact, given the company's propensity for releasing Borderlands DLC, it could quickly be released as add-on content in the foreseeable future. And hopefully, that would be free content, seeing as how all the best battle royales seem to go free at some point.

Hey Randy, How About You Make A Good Decision For Once?

There's no reason for Gearbox not to do this, seeing as how Borderlands' popularity combined with a battle royale seems like a license to print money. Plus, this would give them a reason to start releasing new skins for purchase, as well as more vault hunters to play as in both the story and battle royale modes. Sure, Borderlands 3 is probably going to make a profit either way, but this would put the game over the top.

So Gearbox, take our suggestion and cram a battle royale into Borderlands 3 while it's still fresh in the minds of gamers everywhere. Otherwise, your game might end up as forgotten as The Pre-Sequel.
